NYC Pride - Heritage of Pride

NYC Pride March is the one with the most direct line to the start of the movement. The first march, in June 1970, marked a year since the Stonewall uprising, and the route still passes the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street. Heritage of Pride, the volunteer-run nonprofit behind it, puts about 75,000 marchers on the street from hundreds of groups. That makes it less a parade you watch for an hour than a whole afternoon of the city marching past.
The march heads south down Fifth Avenue, turns west along 8th Street through Greenwich Village, passes Stonewall and finishes on the west side of the Village. Watching is free, and so is PrideFest, the street fair held in the Village the same day. Youth Pride, for 13 to 24-year-olds, runs on the Saturday. The ticketed side is the big NYC Pride dance parties, rooftop events and hotel parties that pack the weekend. If corporate floats aren't your thing, the grassroots Queer Liberation March, which runs separately, is the political alternative.
The march is held on the last Sunday of June, closing out a month of Pride events. Expect heat and humidity, little shade on Fifth Avenue, and long waits at the barricades; bring water and pick a spot early, ideally south of 14th Street, where the crowd is more local. Hotel prices spike across Manhattan that weekend, so book well ahead or stay in Brooklyn or Queens on a direct subway line.
The 2026 march took place on Sunday, 28 June 2026, the 57th anniversary of Stonewall, under the theme "For All of Us," a phrase drawn from Marsha P. Johnson. Grand marshals were Dominique Jackson, Peppermint, Bernie Wagenblast, Bowen Yang and the activist group Gays Against Guns. Local TV reported more than a million people out on the day. The 2027 date hadn't been announced when we checked.
