About this place Chez Billy

Chez Billy, a gay restaurant in Washington, DC, salutes the past lives of its address.

The name itself is a nod to what came before: Billy Simpson's House of Seafood and Steaks. That restaurant was an important spot for Washington's Black community between 1956 and 1978, a period that saw the end of segregation and the start of Home Rule in the city. Chez Billy's owners connect LGBTQ+ hospitality with that earlier history of marginalized people finding places to meet, celebrate, and build community.

You'll find Chez Billy on Georgia Avenue NW. It's the kind of place where you can relax, eat, and feel welcome, whether you're LGBTQ+ or an ally.

Ironically enough, the best cheeseburger I've had in a very long time of not #1.y wife love the tuna, she said it was perfectly seasoned on the outside. She also loved those snails... Yuk. 😆

20% added to my bill and not saying it upfront is underhanded!

Everything about our experience at Chez Billy Syd was perfection. Servers and host were friendly and accommodating. The interior was charming. The food and cocktails were delicious. I had the duck and the pot de creme. Highly recommend both!

Grabbed dinner at the bar. My early life I had some amazing meals at French restaurants and 2-3 Michelin. When you have a wife and kids, how quickly dining out changes. I've been chasing a thrill with food in recent years. It has been harder to find. I had a whiskey called 1928 BHAKTA which was rye whiskey blended with XO Calvados and vintage Armagnac, including drops from 1928. That was solid for the price point. The bartender was friendly and attentive. I got the Pate Saison. It lacked something for me. I found the bread incredibly unmarkable for a high end restaurant. Adding French butter might have made me change my mind about the dish. Or unique crostinis or a better delivery vessel. It lacked delivery with differentiation. It was uninspired. The arctic char was much better. Cream and leek/potato base was great. Fish had so much potential, however, had at least 3 bites with the crust that undesirable aged fish flavor. I have been spoiled getting fresh catch from oceanside docks. This comes down to fish preparation or age tolerance. I could tell this fish could have been a star, but its quality was not done justice to ensure uniformity of flavor. Chez certainly has the pedigree and cuisine focus. But it comes down to execution. At these levels, patrons demand excellence. They aren't there at the moment, but I could see perhaps with different dishes or at a different time, a path to high-premium tier food tasting experience.
