Last verified: October 2026. Stockholm has no gay hotel and no men-only guesthouse. As far as I could check this year, there is also no gay-owned hotel run for gay travellers. The recent losses have been bars: Torget, Gamla Stan's chandeliered gay bar at Mälartorget 13, has closed for good, and so has Hjärtat på Torget, another small gay bar in the old town. What the city does have is a small, tight scene and plenty of good mainstream hotels that won't blink when two men ask for a double bed. So the real question is distance. The heart of gay Stockholm is one short block of Wollmar Yxkullsgatan by Mariatorget on Södermalm, where Side Track and SLM sit almost opposite each other. The Secret Garden is at the bottom of Gamla Stan, and the big club nights and Pride are out at Slakthusområdet, two metro stops south of Skanstull. This guide covers which hotels put you a few minutes from that block and which only look central on a map. It also covers what Pride 2027 and the leather weekends mean for booking, how to get home at 3 am, and the clinic, law and safety details worth knowing before you land.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

On foot, gay Stockholm is a triangle. At the top is Kornhamnstorg at the southern tip of Gamla Stan, home of The Secret Garden. At the bottom right is Wollmar Yxkullsgatan between Hornsgatan and Swedenborgsgatan, the block with Side Track at number 7 and SLM at number 18. The left corner is Hornsgatan 70, where Bar Replik has been serving queer regulars since 2004. Below the cliffs, Söder Mälarstrand quay holds Patricia and the hotel boats. Everything inside the triangle is 15 minutes or less on foot. But Södermalm is a rock: you climb from the waterfront to Mariatorget, and in winter the steps and steep lanes ice over. Add 2–3 minutes to any route that starts on the quay.

Outside the triangle the city is still safe, just far. Norrmalm and Östermalm have the station, Stureplan and Petit Scandale at weekends, but from there Side Track is a 30–40 minute walk or three metro stops. Vasastan is residential and good value, and well out of walking range.

Mariatorget and Wollmar Yxkullsgatan

This is the answer for most gay visitors. Hellstens Glashus at Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 13 is right next to the bars, with SLM 1 minute away and Side Track about the same. It's a quirky independent full of antiques where every room is different, so some are lovely and some are small. The street has bar traffic until closing, so ask for a quieter room if you sleep lightly. Rival Hotel at Mariatorget 3 is the polished option. It's owned by ABBA's Benny Andersson and has a 1930s theatre in the building and a bar locals actually use. It's 1–2 minutes from Side Track. Mariatorget metro (red line) is on the corner, so from the airport train it's T-Centralen plus three stops.

At 3 am this is one of the calmest places in any European capital to walk home. The square is residential, Hornsgatan has night buses, and the worst you'll meet is a queue for a kebab.

Western Södermalm and Hornstull

Hotel Hellstens Malmgård, an 18th-century wooden manor at Brännkyrkagatan 110, is the quietest stay on the island. Bar Replik is 6–8 minutes away. Side Track is 15–17 minutes along Hornsgatan or the parallel Brännkyrkagatan, which is flat. In summer Lyckan i Tanto, the seasonal queer garden bar in Tantolunden, is a pleasant 10–15 minute stroll south. Zinkensdamm metro is close if you'd rather ride.

Söder Mälarstrand: the hotel boats

Den Röda Båten (Kajplats 10) and Rygerfjord (Kajplats 13) are moored on the north shore of Södermalm, looking across to Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen. Both mix hostel beds with private cabins. Our listings put them 3–5 minutes from Patricia and about 10–14 minutes from Wollmar Yxkullsgatan once you count the climb. One 2026 review says Patricia has moved along the quay, so check where it's moored before you set off. The quay is lit and busy with walkers until late in summer, and quieter and windier in winter. Parts of Slussen, a short walk east, are still being rebuilt, so follow the signed detours rather than your map app. Mälardrottningen, a converted 1920s motor yacht at Riddarholmskajen, is across the water: 9–11 minutes to The Secret Garden and 14–17 to Side Track. Cabins on all three are compact, so check sizes before booking if you have a big case.

Gamla Stan

Scandic Gamla Stan on Lilla Nygatan is the closest hotel to The Secret Garden, at 2–3 minutes. Collector's Lady Hamilton Hotel on Storkyrkobrinken, the lane up to the palace, is 6–8 minutes from it. Both are 13–19 minutes from Side Track via Slussen. The old town empties once the restaurants close, which makes it quiet rather than risky. The narrow lanes are well lit, and by dawn they're full of cleaners. Rooms in both hotels are small and the buildings are old.

Skanstull, for Pride and the club nights

Stockholm's big gay parties have moved south. Club Backdoor runs at Tolv in the Globen arena district on Fridays and Saturdays, and since 2026 Stockholm Pride's festival area has been in Slakthusområdet next door. Clarion Hotel Stockholm at Ringvägen 98 is the nearest hotel in our listings. It's a 20–22 minute walk to Side Track, and two stops on the green line (Skanstull, Gullmarsplan, Globen) or about 30 minutes on foot to the clubs. It has a pool and saunas, and it's a large conference hotel. Ringvägen and Götgatan are busy and safe at night. The walk down past Gullmarsplan is dull rather than dangerous.

Norrmalm, Östermalm and Skeppsholmen

Berns Hotel by Berzelii Park is 3–5 minutes from Petit Scandale, the Friday and Saturday gay club night at Jakobs torg, but nearly 30 minutes from Side Track. The Berns salons downstairs host a nightclub, so ask for a high floor. Villa Dagmar on Nybrogatan is quiet, expensive Östermalm. It's 8–10 minutes from USVIDEO on Regeringsgatan and a metro ride from everything else. Skeppsholmen and the STF hostel on the same island are beautiful and silent at night. From there The Secret Garden is 9–16 minutes and Side Track 22–29 minutes, and there's no metro on the island.

By the station, Hotel C Stockholm and Radisson Blu Waterfront are about easy access to the Arlanda Express. They're a 23–30 minute walk from Side Track. Generator Stockholm on Torsgatan is cheap and social, 36–38 minutes from Side Track on foot. Late at night, don't hang around Sergels torg or the T-Centralen concourse, where petty crime and dealing are more common than anywhere on Söder.

Vasastan and the suburbs

Rex Hotel and Hotel Hellsten face each other on Luntmakargatan. They're close to RFSL on Sveavägen but 44–46 minutes' walk from Side Track. Take the green line from Rådmansgatan and change to the red line at T-Centralen. Blique by Nobis near Sankt Eriksplan is 21–23 minutes from Blue Vision and a metro trip from the rest. Klubbensborg and Scandic Skärholmen are on the red line, so Mariatorget is a direct ride. Motel L Älvsjö suits Stockholmsmässan visitors. These only make sense when the centre is sold out.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

None, as of October 2026. I found no gay hotel, men-only guesthouse or clothing-optional property in Stockholm. None of the hotels in our listings is gay-owned or run as a gay business. Stockholm also has no gay sauna. The men-only spaces are the cruising clubs (USVIDEO, Blue Vision, Manhattan) and the leather club SLM, and none of them rent rooms.

Instead there are mainstream hotels that market themselves to LGBTQ+ guests. Hotel Kung Carl at Stureplan (not in our listings) says it belongs to Stockholm LGBT, a network of businesses that court queer visitors. Nordic Light Hotel by the station often gets called gay-friendly in travel press. That's marketing, not ownership, and it tells you nothing about distance to the bars: both are in Norrmalm, more than 30 minutes from Side Track. Private rooms on gay home-share sites cluster in SoFo and around Mariatorget. They're worth a look if you want to sleep on the block for less, but quality and legality vary, so read the reviews.

In practice gay visitors split three ways: Rival and Hellstens Glashus for the walk home, Gamla Stan for first trips, and Clarion or the Globen hotels during Pride. No Swedish front desk will question a same-sex couple, and Swedish discrimination law covers hotel services.

Booking rules that bite

    • Tax. Sweden has no tourist or city tax. Accommodation carries 12% VAT, which is already in the price you see. There are no resort fees.
    • Guests and joiners. Swedish hotels don't charge joiner fees. Guests from outside the Nordic countries may be asked for a passport and a signed registration card at check-in. Hostels and the dorm boats often keep non-guests out after dark, so check the house rules. If you're travelling as two, book two guests on the booking site. Breakfast is often priced per person, and it saves an awkward conversation at the desk mid-stay.
    • Deposits. Expect a card pre-authorisation at check-in. Stockholm is close to cashless and many bars, gay ones included, won't take notes, so bring a card that works abroad.
    • Smoke-free rooms. Nearly every hotel is non-smoking and charges a cleaning fee if you ignore that. The amount varies, so check before booking.
    • Cancellation. Expect stricter cancellation terms at Söder hotels in Pride week and on Baltic Battle weekend. Book the flexible rate early, then rebook if prices drop.
    • Prices. Rough ranges per night: a hostel bed about SEK 300–550 (about US$30–55), a boat cabin or simple double about SEK 900–1,500, a mid-range double on Söder or in Gamla Stan about SEK 1,500–2,800, and Berns, Rival or Villa Dagmar about SEK 2,500–5,000 or more in summer. Confirm before booking, because Pride week can double these.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Stockholm Pride: 2–8 August 2027

Stockholm Pride, the biggest Pride in the Nordic countries, has announced 2–8 August 2027 (week 31) for its next edition. The 2026 festival ran from 27 July to 1 August and moved its ticketed festival area, now called Pride District, to Slakthusområdet. The 2026 parade set off from Norr Mälarstrand by City Hall at 13.00 on Saturday 1 August and finished at Slussplan, about 4.5 km later. As of October 2026 the 2027 parade day and Pride District location haven't been announced. It's usually on the Saturday, which would be 7 August, but confirm. Pride falls in peak Swedish summer, when Södermalm hotels are already full of tourists, so book Söder or Skanstull by spring. For the parade finish and the bars, stay at Rival, Hellstens Glashus or the Söder boats. For Pride District and the late parties, Clarion Hotel Stockholm or a hotel near Globen (Quality Hotel Globe, not in our listings) saves you the metro.

Bear events run at the same time. Stockholm Bear Pride is listed for the last days of Pride week 2027, but I couldn't confirm the dates with the organiser, so treat them as unverified. STHLM Bear Weekend usually takes place in May, and 2027 dates hadn't been published as of October 2026.

Baltic Battle (SLM): next edition not yet announced

SLM's leather and fetish weekend has run since 1978. Its 48th edition was on 7–11 October 2026, with warm-up and after-parties at the club on Wollmar Yxkullsgatan and the main party at Slakthuset. It's men only, 18 and over, with a strict dress code, and weekend passes sold out well before the date. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced as of October 2026. For this one, Hellstens Glashus is the obvious place to stay: SLM is 47 metres from its door. SLM also runs its Bastille and Domination Stockholm parties, which have their own websites, so check dates there.

Weekly fixtures

Patricia's Sunday gay night has been an institution for two decades. Petit Scandale runs on Fridays and Saturdays, and so does Club Backdoor at Tolv. SLM's regular club nights need a membership. Visitors can join, and full-year members of partner clubs in ECMC and Top of Europe get in. Themes change nightly, from bears to sportswear, so check the calendar before you go.

Getting back at 3 am

From Arlanda. The Arlanda Express costs SEK 340 one way (about US$35) and takes about 18 minutes to Stockholm Central. Late at night it runs every 30 minutes. From T-Centralen the red line gets you to Mariatorget in three stops. The SL commuter train is cheaper on a normal SL ticket, but it adds an airport fee of SEK 157 and takes longer. Fixed-price taxis from Arlanda to the city cost about SEK 800–1,275 depending on the company, so agree the fixed price or check the posted rate before you get in. Flygbussarna coaches reach Cityterminalen in about 45 minutes.

Night transport. The metro runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights, so Mariatorget, Slussen, Skanstull and Globen stay connected after the clubs close. On weeknights night buses take over, and Hornsgatan and Götgatan are on the main routes. You can pay for SL by tapping a contactless bank card at the gates, and a ticket lasts 75 minutes.

Taxis. Uber and Bolt both work, as do Taxi Stockholm and Taxi Kurir. In Sweden each taxi company sets its own prices and shows them on a yellow sticker in the rear window. The unmarked cars touting outside clubs are the ones that overcharge. From Globen to Mariatorget is a short, simple ride.

On foot. Wollmar Yxkullsgatan, Hornsgatan, Mariatorget, Söder Mälarstrand and Gamla Stan are fine at any hour. Götgatan and Medborgarplatsen get loud with drunk crowds at weekend closing time. Sergels torg is the one central spot to cross quickly. In December and January it's dark by mid-afternoon and the Söder hills are icy, so wear shoes with proper grip.

Health, safety and the law

Clinic. Venhälsan at Södersjukhuset (Sjukhusbacken 10, Södermalm, 10–15 minutes from Skanstull metro) is the specialist sexual-health clinic for men and trans people who have sex with men. It runs Stockholm's main PrEP service, including an online clinic for residents. Visitors should bring their own PrEP. For PEP within 72 hours, call Venhälsan during office hours. In the evening or at weekends, go to the emergency department at Södersjukhuset. For health advice by phone call 1177, and for emergencies 112. RFSL on Sveavägen can point you to testing and support, and Posithiva Gruppen supports people living with HIV.

Apps. In 2025, robberies set up through fake dating-app profiles made news in several countries, from Australia to Malaysia. I found no Stockholm incident aimed at visitors in 2025–2026. The usual rule still applies: meet first in a bar or your hotel lobby, and be wary of invitations to an unfamiliar suburban address.

Drugs. Sweden is among the strictest countries in Europe. Using drugs, not just having them, is a crime, and police can make you take a test if they suspect you. Cannabis is illegal in every form. Expect a hotel to call the police rather than look the other way, and the law has no tolerance for chemsex. Snus is legal. Strong alcohol is sold only at Systembolaget, which is closed on Sundays.

Smoking. Smoking is banned indoors, on outdoor restaurant and bar terraces, at bus stops, on station platforms and at building entrances.

Sex and nudity. In Sweden it's a crime to pay for sex, and that includes escorts booked online. Nude bathing is tolerated in some places, such as the rocks at Frescati by Stockholm University, which is the nearest thing the city has to a gay beach. Sex in public view can be prosecuted as disorderly conduct. Långholmen and Kärsön are shared with families and joggers, so read the room.

Door policies. Many Stockholm clubs set a minimum age above 18 (often 20 or older) and ask for ID. Bring a passport or EU ID card, not a photo of one.

Three picks

Budget: Rygerfjord. A cabin on the water below Södermalm for a fraction of a Söder hotel price. It's 3–5 minutes from Patricia on Sunday and about 12 minutes up the hill to Side Track. Pay extra for a cabin with a window.

Mid-range: Hellstens Glashus. The gay bars are next door: SLM is 47 metres away, Side Track a minute, and Mariatorget metro is round the corner. This is the place to book for Baltic Battle.

Splurge: Rival Hotel. Design rooms, a theatre downstairs, a bar on Mariatorget that fills with locals, and Side Track 1–2 minutes away. Berns is grander, but it leaves you a taxi ride from the scene. Rival doesn't.
