About this place The Otherside

The Otherside has been the gay coffeeshop of Reguliersdwarsstraat since 1985 — the name is a wink at the old Dutch expression for being "of the other side". It sits at the quiet west end of the street, doors open every day from ten in the morning until midnight. It works like any Amsterdam coffeeshop — menu at the counter, good coffee and juices alongside — but the soundtrack is pop divas and the clientele skews queer, especially in the hours before the bars across the street open. Staff are used to first-timers and will talk you through the menu without ceremony. A practical tip: it is one of the few places in the gay street where you can sit down in daylight hours, which makes it a natural meeting point before a night out.

The rest does not apply. I go there to do ecstatic dance. Lovely large space.

Program info regarding the Aware concert was unclear; the concert ended up starting much later. A completely different atmosphere than the concert description (starting from silence). 75 euro ticket - sound quality mediocre, often the music/lyrics weren't even clearly audible due to a lot of talking people and other noise in between. 6.50 for a can of ginger beer where they won't even pour the can empty! Doesn't fit in the glass, very peculiar. Give me the Heartfire concerts any day, where the music and Sacred Space take center stage.

It was my first time and I got the feeling that a rented hall is for weddings or something. Not really a club feeling. But maybe it was because of the Full House party I was at. Other parties I saw, like R&B Legends, had a completely different vibe. So it can go either way. I'd say discover it for yourself.
