The honest summary: Nuremberg has a small, friendly, mostly local gay scene: about seven gay bars, one gay sauna and a Pride that has grown fast, from 12,500 people in 2024 to more than 20,000 in 2026. There's no gay district and no big gay club. Come for the old town, the beer and the Christmas market, and spend your evenings on a short bar crawl between the Altstadt and the Südstadt. In August, come for CSD.
Legal in one line: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 1 October 2017. Paragraph 175 was repealed in 1994, conversion therapy on minors has been banned since 2020, and the self-determination law has let people change their legal gender by declaration since 1 November 2024. Bavaria adopted its first state queer action plan in June 2026.
Where the scene is
There is no gayborhood. We found no current source that names one, and the old idea that Gostenhof or the Fürther Straße is the gay quarter doesn't match where the venues actually are. In practice the scene sits in three loose clusters, all walkable or one U-Bahn stop apart:
- Altstadt, St. Lorenz side (postcode 90402, south of the river): Bar59, Pigalle, DATE 6, La Bas and the Achilleus sauna are all within about ten minutes of the Lorenzkirche.
- Südstadt, Bogenstraße, just south of the main station: Savoy Bar and the Paradies drag theatre are on the same street.
- Plärrer, at the west gate of the old town: the queer centre Fliederlich and the new DATE 31 bar.
- Savoy Bar (Bogenstraße 45, Südstadt) opened on 1 July 1983 and is the city's oldest gay bar still running. It's a gay men's local with an older crowd and a weekly "Savoy Montag" from 19:00. GAYCON lists Thursday to Monday from 17:00, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Bar59 (Johannesgasse 59, old town) calls itself a queer scene bar and is gay-owned, according to Travel Gay. It's in the space that used to be the Smiley Bar. Thursday is After Work from 19:00, and karaoke is on the second Saturday of each month.
- Pigalle Schlagerbar (Pfeifergasse 2a, near the Lorenzkirche) is a Schlager bar where the whole room sings along to German pop. Spartacus describes the crowd as mostly gay and lesbian. It's open Wednesday to Saturday from 19:00 or 20:00 until 2 or 3am.
- DATE 6 (Mostgasse 6, near Jakobsplatz) opened in May 2026 and calls itself "a new, small gay bar". It has a living-room feel and early hours: from 16:00 daily, until 22:00 on weeknights.
- DATE 31 (Ottostraße 31, near Plärrer) is DATE 6's sister bar. It's a bistro and music bar that opened on 29 October 2026 with karaoke nights planned. It's brand new, so check its Instagram for hours.
- La Bas (Hallplatz 31, old town) is a long-running pub-restaurant with Franconian food and a summer beer garden. Travel Gay and Spartacus list it as a gay and lesbian bar, though the pub doesn't advertise it. It's open until about 5am every day, which makes it the usual last stop.
- Einfachso Pilsbar (Wodanstraße 26, Gleißhammer) calls itself "your gay bar in the Südstadt". It's a Pilsbar with beer, simple food and an older crowd, open until 2am on weeknights and 4am at weekends, closed Sundays. Reviewers say it's cash only. Many guides still show its old Klaragasse address.
- Rosa Hirsch at Der Hirsch, every month or two, and running for about 27 years. The next one is on 28 November 2026.
- Queer Jungle at PARKS, several times a year. Its organiser also runs The Pink Box and Pink Banana, which have no dates at the moment.
- SUPAFLY – Gays & Friends Clubbing at Basement 11. The next one is on 13 November 2026.
- Pink Gate at GATE Club by the airport, occasionally.
- A fetish pub crawl that moves between the bars about every month or two, and Pink Tuesday at E-Werk in Erlangen.
- Cartoon (An der Sparkasse 6) closed in spring 2024, as Nürnberger Nachrichten reported. Some sites still list it as open or "reopened". It isn't.
- Chiringay / City-Sauna (Comeniusstraße) closed around 2023 and never reopened, despite a sign promising it would.
- Saunaclub 67 (Pirckheimerstraße) is closed, according to Travel Gay.
- "Apollo Sauna" never existed in Nuremberg. The real Apollo is in Berlin, and old copies of a listing on this site are the only trace of a Nuremberg one.
- Smiley Bar (Johannesgasse 59) is gone; Bar59 is in its space now.
- Einfachso on Klaragasse moved to Wodanstraße in autumn 2025.
- Bert's Bar (Wiesenstraße) is permanently closed.
- Fliederlich (Sandstraße 1, 1st floor, at Plärrer) has been the queer centre since 1978. It offers counselling, an archive and dozens of groups for youth, trans people, bi people, women, over-60s, families and more. Office hours are Monday 13:00–16:00 and Tuesday and Wednesday 11:00–14:00.
- AIDS-Hilfe Nürnberg-Erlangen-Fürth (Entengasse 2, old town) runs the Checkpoint for HIV, hepatitis and STI testing and counselling.
- Rosa Panther is the queer sports club, founded in 1991, with football, volleyball, swimming and more (rosapanther.de).
- The city's human-rights office has an LGBTIQ coordination unit that runs the "Queeres Nürnberg" action plan. In March 2026 the council voted for a city-backed queer community house, the "Regenbogenhaus", on Dietzstraße. It's due to open in 2029.
- Airport: Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is about 7 km north. The U2 runs to the main station in about 12 minutes, every 10 minutes from roughly 04:30 to 00:30.
- Getting around: VAG runs the U-Bahn, trams and buses. The Deutschlandticket (€63 a month in 2026) covers them, along with regional trains to Fürth, Erlangen and Bamberg.
- Cash: many older bars, Einfachso included, are cash only. Carry some euros.
- Late nights: most bars close by 2am on weeknights. La Bas and Einfachso run latest.
- Safety: Nuremberg is generally relaxed for same-sex couples in the centre. Bavarian police recorded 181 anti-queer crimes statewide in 2025, so use normal big-city sense late at night. CSD 2026 went ahead with a reviewed security plan, and no attacks were reported.
- History: the Documentation Centre at the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds covers the city's Nazi-era history. Each year Fliederlich lays a wreath for persecuted gay men at the Flossenbürg concentration camp memorial.
- schwul: gay (men). lesbisch: lesbian. queer is used as in English.
- Kneipe: pub. Schlager: German pop sing-along music.
- Eintritt: entry fee. Nur Barzahlung: cash only.
- CSD (Christopher Street Day): what Germans call Pride.
Einfachso is the outlier, out in Gleißhammer in the south-east, after it moved from the old town in autumn 2025.
Bars
All of these are small. None has a dance floor worth the name, and most open in the evening and close somewhere between midnight and 4am. Hours below come from the local gay magazine GAYCON and the bars' own pages in October 2026; they change, so check before a midweek visit.

Parties and drag
The dancing happens at roving party series in mainstream clubs rather than in gay bars. The ones running in autumn 2026, per GAYCON and the organisers:
For drag, the Paradies Revue Theater on Bogenstraße has been running travesty revues for 48 seasons; the tourist office calls it southern Germany's only travesty theatre. Its audience is mostly mainstream. None of the bars runs a regular drag night. The events page lists upcoming parties, Fliederlich group meetings and Achilleus theme days.
Sauna and cruising
Achilleus Men's Spa (Färberstraße 21a) is the only gay sauna. It opened in 2015 and has three floors with dry saunas, steam, a whirlpool, cabins and a bar. It's open daily from 13:00, until 23:00 Sunday to Wednesday, midnight on Thursday and 2am on Friday and Saturday. Entry is €28.50, €18.50 for under-25s and €19.50 for students or late arrivals. Thursday is a unisex day, so pick another day if you want men only.
There are no gay cruising bars, sex clubs or darkroom bars in Nuremberg. A sex cinema with gay cabins on Luitpoldstraße turns up in some older listings, but we couldn't confirm in October 2026 that it's still open, so we don't list it. We also don't list outdoor cruising spots; the only claims we found came from a single site that labels almost every park. The fetish community meets through the Nürnberger Lederclub and SMania, both of which run regular events.

Pride: CSD Nürnberg
CSD Nürnberg is run by the volunteer Förderverein Christopher-Street-Day Nürnberg e.V. It has grown each year: 12,500 people in 2024, about 17,500 in 2025 and, according to Fliederlich, more than 20,000 at the 2026 demo and street festival. In 2026 the Pride weeks ran from 22 July to 9 August with more than 80 events. The demo was on Saturday 8 August, starting at 11:30 at Prinzregentenufer and ending at the Kornmarkt, beside the Straße der Menschenrechte, where the street festival ran through Sunday. Other dates were the dyke*march on 25 July and a Pride Ride by bike on 26 July.
The demo usually falls on the first or second Saturday of August, but the 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Check csd-nuernberg.de or our CSD Nürnberg page. Two smaller Prides are nearby: CSD Fürth in early July (4 July in 2026) and CSD Erlangen in September (19 September in 2026, about 4,000 people).

Community and health
Where to stay
There are no gay hotels or gay-run guesthouses. We found none, and Hotel Victoria's own site, often labelled "gay-friendly", says nothing about it. The practical choice is location. Hotels around the main station put you a few minutes from both the Südstadt bars and the old town: Park Plaza, The Cloud One and Leonardo Royal. Hotel Victoria is on Königstraße just inside the walls, Five Reasons is a well-rated budget option inside the wall, and Park Inn by Radisson is next door to Fliederlich at Plärrer. Prices jump during big trade fairs, CSD weekend and the Christkindlesmarkt (late November to 24 December). See all hotels in Nuremberg.
