The honest summary: Detroit has no gayborhood and no strip you can walk end to end. The old gay centre around Palmer Park faded decades ago, and the community's living room moved nine miles up Woodward Avenue to the suburb of Ferndale. What Detroit itself still has is a handful of real, long-running gay bars in small clusters on the north, west and east sides, one bathhouse, a big June Pride downtown and one of the oldest Black Prides in the country. You'll need a car or a rideshare app. The bars are unpolished and friendly, and many have been open for more than forty years.
Where the scene is
Model D and Metro Times both tell the same story. Palmer Park, on the north side between Woodward and Wyoming, was the heart of gay Detroit in the 1970s and 80s, and that gayborhood no longer exists. Today the scene looks like this:
- Palmer Park / West McNichols: the Menjo's complex, with the Detroit Eagle inside, is all that's left of the old cluster. Body Zone, the bathhouse, is a few miles east on East McNichols.
- West side (West Warren Avenue and Greenfield Road): Gigi's, Adam's Apple and HALO, three neighbourhood bars a short drive apart in and around Warrendale.
- Scattered elsewhere: El Trombone in Southwest Detroit, Escape Lounge on the east side, and Inuendo in Highland Park, the separate small city surrounded by Detroit.
- Ferndale (Woodward at Nine Mile, its own city): the community hub, with the Affirmations center, the SOHO bar, queer-owned shops and Ferndale Pride. Royal Oak, the next suburb up, has Pronto and Five15.
- Menjo's Complex (928 W McNichols Rd). A gay bar since 1974 and the longest-running one in the city (Out x Out, Pride Source). It has a main bar and dance floor, the Eagle, and Olympus Hall for drag. Google lists it as open Thursday to Sunday from about 9pm.
- The Detroit Eagle, inside Menjo's. The leather and bear bar, with fetish nights on the calendar.
- Gigi's (16920 W Warren Ave). Gay-owned since 1973, with drag cabaret downstairs and a dance bar upstairs. It's in Detroit's Warrendale area, not Dearborn, whatever older listings say.
- Adam's Apple (18931 W Warren Ave). Owned by a trans woman and the city's trans bar, home of the Detroit TG Invasion weekends. Cash only.
- HALO Bar & Lounge (8070 Greenfield Rd). The Hayloft Saloon from 1980 until new owners rebranded it in 2024. Metro Times readers voted it Best Karaoke in 2025. It has a back patio and a bear-friendly crowd.
- El Trombone (4654 W Vernor Hwy, Southwest Detroit). The newest of the lot. The Detroit Optimist Society group opened it in the old Mutiny Tiki space, and Metro Times reported it was pitched as "a really nice, local gay bar". Expect cocktails, DJs, drag and karaoke.
- Escape Lounge (19404 Sherwood St, east side). A gay-owned men's after-hours bar, formerly Stingers Lounge, listed by Pride Source and Travel Gay. We couldn't find recent press, so check its socials first.
- Inuendo (744 E Savannah St, Highland Park). A hip-hop and R&B club popular with Black and other queer people of colour, open Wednesday to Sunday from about 10pm (Travel Gay).
- Affirmations (290 W Nine Mile Rd, Ferndale). The region's LGBTQ+ community center, with support groups, clinics, youth drop-in, film nights and socials almost every day. Many of the events on our Detroit calendar are theirs.
- LGBT Detroit (20025 Greenfield Rd). A Black-led organisation, formerly called KICK, that produces Hotter Than July.
- Ruth Ellis Center. Services for LGBTQ+ young people at sites in Detroit and Highland Park, named for the Black lesbian elder Ruth Ellis.
- Corktown Health (1726 Howard St) is an LGBTQ+-focused health center. It has no listing on our site yet.
- Motor City Pride: Hart Plaza on the downtown riverfront, with a Sunday parade. It ran June 6-7 in 2026, and the 2027 dates are June 12-13 (motorcitypride.org).
- Ferndale Pride: usually late May or early June on West Nine Mile, but in 2027 it moves to August 7 because the road is being repaved in spring (WXYZ, September 2026). Note that visitferndale.com's "June 13" date refers to Ferndale, California.
- Hotter Than July: Detroit's Black Pride, run by LGBT Detroit. The 31st edition ran July 23-25, 2026 and ended with the picnic in Palmer Park. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing.
- Recurring: the Detroit Drag Bus tours, Lesbian Social Detroit parties (lately at IO Rooftop in Corktown) and drag nights at Menjo's, Gigi's and El Trombone.
- Woodward Bar & Grill (6426 Woodward). It was the city's oldest gay bar, dating back to the 1950s, until a three-alarm fire destroyed it in June 2022 (Pride Source, WXYZ). We found no sign it has reopened.
- Hayloft Saloon is now HALO, at the same address.
- TNT Health Club closed in 2018. Body Zone is the only bathhouse now.
- Flaming Embers (Broderick Tower) closed about two weeks after opening in 2023.
- Stingers Lounge is now Escape Lounge.
- Palmer Park as a gayborhood ended in the late 1980s. The bars are gone, apart from Menjo's.
- Getting around: Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) is about 20 miles (33 km) southwest of downtown. Downtown and Midtown are walkable, and the QLINE and People Mover help, but every bar cluster is a 15-25 minute drive from the next one. Budget for Uber or Lyft.
- Cash: Adam's Apple is cash only, and several older bars prefer cash.
- Hours: bars close at 2am. Many are only busy Thursday to Saturday, and some don't open early in the week.
- Check socials: the smaller bars post their hours and events on Facebook and Instagram rather than on websites.
- Safety: use normal big-city sense. Take a rideshare door to door at night rather than walking between neighbourhoods, and don't leave valuables visible in a parked car.
- "The D" is what locals call the city.
- Mile roads: 6 Mile is McNichols, 7 Mile and 8 Mile follow, and 9 Mile is Ferndale's main street. People give directions this way.
- A Coney is a Coney Island diner with chili dogs, often the last stop after the bars.
- A party store is a corner liquor and convenience shop.
Bars and clubs in Detroit
Just outside the city: SOHO (205 W Nine Mile, Ferndale), the suburb's one dedicated gay bar since 2004, and Pronto and Five15 on South Washington Avenue in Royal Oak, the second best known for drag queen bingo. Our Detroit bars page has hours and reviews for each.

Bathhouse
Body Zone (1617 E McNichols Rd) is the only gay bathhouse left in metro Detroit. Out x Out lists it as men only and open 24/7. Directory listings give roughly $50 a year for membership plus about $25 for a room or $30 for a locker, with more charged at weekends. Those prices aren't dated, so confirm at the door. TNT Health Club on 8 Mile closed in 2018.

Where to stay
There is no gay hotel in Detroit. Downtown is the easiest base for the riverfront, Hart Plaza at Pride time and the QLINE streetcar up Woodward. The Westin Book Cadillac, The Inn on Ferry Street in Midtown and Hostel Detroit cover three budgets. If you plan to spend your nights in Ferndale and Royal Oak, stay up there instead. Every hotel we list is on the Detroit hotels page.

FAQ
Does Detroit have a gay neighbourhood?
Not any more. Palmer Park played that role until the late 1980s. Today the closest thing is Ferndale, a separate suburb nine miles north on Woodward Avenue. Inside Detroit, the bars are spread across the north, west and east sides.

What is the best gay bar in Detroit?
For a first night out, go to Menjo's. It's the biggest and oldest, and the Eagle is in the same building. For drag, go to Gigi's. For cocktails, go to El Trombone. For an easy bar crawl on foot, Ferndale's SOHO and the nearby Nine Mile strip are easier than anywhere in the city.
Is Woodward Bar & Grill still open?
No. A fire destroyed it in June 2022 and it has not reopened.

When is Motor City Pride 2027?
June 12-13, 2027, at Hart Plaza downtown. Ferndale Pride moves to August 7, 2027.
Is there a gay sauna in Detroit?
Yes, one: Body Zone on East McNichols Road. It's men only and open around the clock.

Is Detroit safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
Generally yes. Michigan's civil rights and hate-crime laws both cover sexual orientation and gender identity. The practical risks are the usual big-city ones, so use a rideshare between neighbourhoods at night.
