- Eye contact is the language. Held eye contact and a lingering pause is interest; looking away is a no. Nobody owes you an explanation.
- A "no" is final. Following someone who turned you down is the one thing that gets people banned from a spot by the regulars themselves.
- Keep your phone away. Filming or photographing anyone is the ultimate violation — in some countries it is also a crime.
- Leave the place cleaner than you found it. Spots die when neighbours complain. Litter is what kills them.

- Legality varies enormously. In most of Europe and the Americas, cruising itself is not illegal, though "public indecency" laws may apply if you are visible to others. - Go with your instincts, not against them. If a spot feels empty and wrong, it is. The good hours are the busy hours — regulars are safety in numbers.
- Phones, wallets, watches. Robbery targeting cruisers exists precisely because victims rarely report. Take what you need and nothing you would miss.
- Play safe. Carry your own condoms. If you are on PrEP, cruising is exactly what it is for; if you are not, in most big cities a sexual-health clinic will see you within a day.
