The honest summary: San Pedro de Atacama is an adobe village of 9,843 people (2024 census) at about 2,400 metres in Chile's Atacama Desert, and the base for the Valle de la Luna, the salt lagoons, the El Tatio geysers and some of the darkest skies on the planet. Chilean law protects you here as fully as in Santiago, and the town is used to travellers from everywhere. But it has no gay bar, no gay sauna, no LGBTQ+ group and no gay hotel that we could confirm in October 2026. Come for the desert, sleep somewhere comfortable, and treat the evenings as quiet ones.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations have been legal in Chile since 1999. The Ley Zamudio (2012) punishes discrimination, civil unions arrived in 2015, the Gender Identity Law in 2018, and marriage equality with joint adoption took effect on 10 March 2022 (Ley 21.400). The old Article 365, which set a higher age of consent for sex between men, was repealed in 2022. The Kast government, in office since 11 March 2026, has not changed any of these laws, though LGBTQ+ groups say the political climate has cooled.
Bars and nightlife
There is no gay bar or club in San Pedro de Atacama. Nightlife is a handful of restaurant-bars on Calle Caracoles and the streets that cross it (Toconao, Tocopilla, Domingo Atienza): patios with fire pits, pisco sours, a little live music. Bars usually close around 1 or 2 a.m., and many will only serve alcohol with food. Same-sex couples get the same shrug as everyone else in these places, which is mostly full of other tourists.
If you've seen "gay bars in San Pedro de Atacama" lists online, they were wrong, and for a while ours was one of them. See the box below.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
ChelaCabur, Lola, Lola Bar, Perrock, Café Rural, La Casona, Cervecería St. Peter and Agua Loca were listed as "gay bars" by an automated import. They are ordinary tourist bars and restaurants; none describes itself as LGBTQ+ and we found no source that does. We have removed the label.
Termas de Puritama and Kimal Relax appeared as "gay saunas". Puritama is a set of mainstream hot springs run by the Explora hotel group (swimwear required). Kimal Relax is the massage centre of Hotel Kimal.
UnderBoys Discoteca is (or was) in Antofagasta, about 310 km away, not in San Pedro. We couldn't confirm it is still open.
Saunas and cruising
There is no gay sauna in San Pedro, and we don't list any cruising areas. The nearest gay saunas we list are in Santiago, a two-hour flight away. Apps like Grindr work here, but the village is tiny and the pool is mostly other travellers passing through.
Where to stay
No hotel in San Pedro markets itself as gay, but the town lives on international tourism and Chilean law forbids turning away a same-sex couple. The ones below are mainstream hotels that we checked in October 2026.
In the village, walking distance to Caracoles:Terrantai Lodge is a restored adobe house on Tocopilla near the church. Hotel Jardín Atacama and Pascual Andino face each other on Gustavo Le Paige, a block from the plaza. Hotel Desértica is at the quiet end of Caracoles, and Hotel Kimal is right at the corner of Caracoles and Domingo Atienza. Don Raúl and Hostal San Pedro are simpler and cheaper.
All-inclusive lodges with their own excursions:Awasi gives each room a private guide and vehicle, Explora runs a menu of hikes and rides from the old Larache estate, and Tierra Atacama looks straight at the Licancabur volcano. Alto Atacama sits in the Catarpe valley a few kilometres out. NOI Casa Atacama and Our Habitas are design hotels with pools that also sell room-only stays.
December to February is peak season, so book early. The full list is on our San Pedro hotels page.
San Pedro doesn't have a Pride march. Movilh's national list for 2026 did include a small Pride gathering on the plaza on 26 June 2026 at 17:00, with no organiser named. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
The bigger events in the region are in the two cities on the way in. Calama, where most visitors land, held a Pride march on Saturday 27 June 2026 from the Parque de la Cultura José Saavedra. Antofagasta, the regional capital on the coast, has the region's largest Pride: its eighth march ran on 27 June 2025 from the municipal esplanade to Plaza Sotomayor, organised by Corporación LGBT+Libre with ballroom, HIV and trans groups. In 2026 Antofagasta held a 10th-anniversary Pride Festival party on 27 June.
Community and health
We found no LGBTQ+ organisation based in San Pedro or Calama. The nearest active groups are in Antofagasta: Corporación LGBT+Libre, Arcoíris Trans Antofagasta and Fundación Chile Positivo (HIV). Nationally, Movilh and Fundación Iguales take reports of discrimination.
Chile's public health centres (CESFAM) offer free, confidential rapid HIV tests. San Pedro's medical services are basic; serious cases go to Calama, 100 km away. Bring any PrEP or regular medication with you.
Practical tips
Getting there: fly to Calama (CJC), then take a shared shuttle (TransVip, Licancabur or Transfer Pampa meet flights) for the 100 km drive, about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30. Buses (Turbus, Frontera del Norte) leave from Calama town, not the airport.
Altitude: take day one easy and drink a lot of water. Do the low trips (Valle de la Luna, Laguna Cejar) before El Tatio and the high lagoons, which are well over 4,000 m.
Cash: there are only a few ATMs and they often run out. Bring pesos from Calama or Santiago. Termas de Puritama, on the other hand, takes cards only.
Valle de la Luna: run by Atacameño communities together with CONAF. Buy tickets ahead at valledelaluna.com (general entry CLP 10,800 in 2026).
Nights are cold: after sunset the desert drops close to freezing, and before dawn at El Tatio it goes well below. Pack layers even in summer.
Safety: we found no reports of anti-LGBTQ+ incidents in San Pedro in 2024 to 2026. Use the same app caution as anywhere: meet in public first.

Perguntas frequentes
