Pegação em São Paulo: gay cruising, 24-hour clubs and the cinemas of the Centro
São Paulo runs the largest gay cruising infrastructure in the southern hemisphere, and most foreign guides barely scratch it. Locals call the whole thing pegação, and the map is simple once you know it: Dédalos on Rua Bento Freitas never closes, a cluster of cruise clubs and old porn cinemas (the cinemões) sits within a fifteen-minute walk of Praça da República, two men-only clubs cover the Frei Caneca and Consolação side near Avenida Paulista, and a dozen saunas handle the rest. Entry starts around R$20 at the cinemas and R$34 at the clubs, which is pocket change by European or US standards. This page lists 12 verified cruising places (clubs, cinemas, bars and two outdoor spots) and tells you honestly which ones we could confirm in 2025-2026 and which ones you should check before crossing town. Outdoor pegação in Parque Ibirapuera and Largo do Arouche still exists, but it is social and daytime; the real action moved indoors decades ago, because indoors is cheap, legal and air-conditioned.
The legal picture, and the one real warning
Legal: Same-sex relations have been legal in Brazil since 1830, same-sex marriage has been nationwide since May 2013, and in 2019 the Supreme Court ruled that homophobia and transphobia are crimes under the racism law. Licensed sex venues operate completely in the open; São Paulo's scene is not underground, it advertises on Instagram and sells tickets on Shotgun. Public sexual activity remains an offence (ato obsceno), which is why the clubs absorbed the outdoor scene long ago. The counterweight, as the country-level notes say, is violence, which falls hardest on trans women and outside the big cities; for a gay male visitor inside the São Paulo scene it is a background fact, not a daily one.
The actual risk is your phone, not your orientation. Central São Paulo at night, meaning República, Vila Buarque, Santa Ifigênia and Arouche, exactly where the clubs are, has a real phone-snatching problem. Walk with the phone pocketed, use Uber or 99 door to door after midnight even for five blocks, and carry one card plus modest cash. Inside the venues you are safer than on most European streets; the fifty metres between them is where attention matters.

The verified spots: the República cluster
The historic centre holds the densest concentration of gay cruising venues in Latin America. Prices below come from the venues' own channels and recent local listings, in reais; door prices change often, so treat them as a range.
Dédalos Bar · Rua Bento Freitas 38, Vila Buarque
The icon, and the reason this guide exists. Two floors, glory holes, private cabins, a proper bar and the famous curral, the corral, a dim open pen where the action is collective, fast and unfiltered; step in when you mean it, step out when you don't. In January 2024 the owners added the mamódromo, a cabin in the upstairs maze built for oral sex through a wall opening, and the venue still runs its recurring Suruba Beneficente nights that donate 10 percent of takings to charity (Band reported on both). Open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Entry has been running R$34-40 on weekdays and R$40-58 on weekends (about $6-10) with daily promotions; confirm the current price on the door or Instagram. At 4 p.m. on a Tuesday there is a crowd; at 7 a.m. on Sunday the after-party arrives from the clubs. The owner opened a second Dédalos in Rio de Janeiro in 2026, which tells you how the São Paulo house is doing.
Clothes logistics, since everyone wonders: at Dédalos and the cinema venues you stay dressed (or down to whatever you like, there is no rule either way), and every club issues a locker with a wristband key at reception, where the phone and wallet belong for the duration. Only RG makes undressing mandatory; at the saunas you get the standard towel.

Upgrade Club · Rua Santa Isabel 198, Vila Buarque
Open since April 2009 and still the polished one of the cluster: 400 square metres over two floors, with reception, snack bar, TV lounge, lockers and showers downstairs, and a bar, a maze and two slings upstairs. It draws a slightly younger, gym-adjacent crowd than Dédalos, with themed nights most weekends. Hours vary by day; listings give late afternoon to 11 p.m. on Mondays and Sundays and from 9 p.m. until 3-5 a.m. Friday and Saturday, so check the club's social pages for the week you are there. Consent rules apply in the dark areas and the house expects you to police yourself.
Club Cine Hot · Av. São João 1081, República
The daytime answer, and bigger than its name suggests: three cinema rooms, a dance floor, private cabins, a darkroom, a piss area, a smoking area and two bars. Classic hours run from 9 a.m. (noon on Sundays) until 9 p.m., with entry around R$20-30; the house also hosts ticketed late parties such as the Sxo Dark Room night on 1 November 2025, which confirms it is alive and well. Lunch-break pegação is a São Paulo institution, and this is its headquarters. Weekday afternoons are mostly men on breaks from nearby offices; weekend parties skew younger and more mixed, with guest lists sometimes open to trans and non-binary people and women.

Cine República · Av. Ipiranga 752, República
The old-school porn cinema, kept honest and cheap: rows of seats, wandering attention, adult films nobody watches. Academic fieldwork on São Paulo's cinemões was done here, which says something about how long it has been running. We could not find a 2025-2026 source confirming current hours, and these cinemas open and close with little notice, so go with Club Cine Hot two blocks away as your fallback and tell us what you find.
The Graus Bar · Rua Aurora 704, Santa Ifigênia
Billed on its own site as a "Relax Cruising Bar": a multi-floor house with gay and straight cinema rooms, a darkroom, private cabins and a transparent shower box, open late on Friday and Saturday (until around 6 a.m. in recent listings) with entry around R$30. The website was active into 2026 and the bar runs reservations by WhatsApp. Rua Aurora is one of the rougher streets in the centre after dark; this is a door-to-door ride venue, not a stroll.

Largo do Arouche · República
The historic gay square, ringed by old bars and a sauna, and the subject of a city-council plan to formalise it as an LGBT+ territory. Today it is where evenings start, not where they finish: a daytime and early-evening meeting point with an older, local crowd, five minutes from every venue above. Keep it discreet; it is a public square.
The Frei Caneca and Consolação side

The Rhinos Club · Rua Fernando de Albuquerque 267, Consolação
A men-only cruising club three blocks from Avenida Paulista and the Consolação and Paulista metro stations, with darkroom, private cabins and a fetish-friendly dress code: harness, sunga, jockstrap or nothing at all are all welcome. It sells its "Super Final de Semana" weekend programmes on Shotgun, with sessions priced by time of day, and ran special holiday programmes through 2024 and 2025. Google reviews sit at 4.7, which for a cruising club is unusual. Check the session schedule before you go; daytime and night sessions have different prices.
Eagle São Paulo · Rua Augusta 620, Baixo Augusta
The local franchise of the international leather bar: bears, leather and fetish nights, a cruisy back area and dress-code parties, in the middle of the Baixo Augusta strip. Listed hours are 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on weeknights and to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday, but those listings date from 2021-2025 and one local directory marks the venue closed, so we are flagging it: check @eaglesaopaulo on Instagram for a current post before going. If it is dark, Woof Bar covers the bear crowd nearby.

Cabines Bar · Rua da Consolação 2510
Listed as a small gay bar with private cabins near the Jardins end of Consolação, a short walk from Frei Caneca. Its website domain no longer resolves and we found no 2025-2026 trace of it, so treat this as unconfirmed: it may be operating quietly for a local crowd, or it may be gone. We keep the listing until someone tells us either way.
Vila Mariana and the south

RG Bar Club · Rua Rio Grande 33, Vila Mariana
The nude-required club, self-described as São Paulo's gay men's naturist bar: clothes are checked at the door, the house runs fetish and fisting-friendly nights, and Saturdays belong to the harder crowd. Recent listings give Tuesday to Thursday evenings, Friday until 2 a.m. and Saturday until 4 a.m., with entry around R$55 on weekdays and R$70 on Friday and Saturday. Not a beginner's room, which is exactly its appeal. Ana Rosa metro is the stop.
Parque do Ibirapuera · Vila Mariana side, Portão 7
São Paulo's main park keeps a social gay corner on the Vila Mariana side near Portão 7 on Avenida República do Líbano, busiest on weekend afternoons and early evenings. It is a family park full of runners, so this is a place to meet and flirt, not to finish; the park is locked overnight and public indecency law applies. The lawns near the Pride marker are the known meeting ground.
Mini Week Club · Rua Comendador Elias Zarzur, Chácara Santo Antônio
The southern outpost: a small cruise club with cabins and a darkroom, reported open Thursday to Sunday from the afternoon into the evening, about fifteen minutes by car from Santo Amaro. It appears only in directory listings and we have no 2025-2026 confirmation of hours or prices, so message them or check social media before making the trip.
The saunas: thermas culture, explained
São Paulo's bathhouses come in two distinct flavours, and knowing the difference saves confusion. The classic cruising saunas run on mutual attraction, like anywhere in Europe. The thermas tradition is Brazil's own: large complexes where some of the men are garotos de programa, working men, and an approach often leads to a polite negotiation of rates rather than a spontaneous hookup. Neither model hides what it is; just know which house you are walking into. All of them are compared on our São Paulo saunas page; the short version follows.
- Wild Thermas Club (Rua Dr. Veiga Filho 802, Higienópolis): the big modern complex, R$55-65 entry, Fridays until 5 a.m., home of the "Clube dos Pauzudos" parties. The closest thing São Paulo has to a European mega-sauna.
- Espaço Lagoa (Rua Pedro Taques 130, Consolação): strippers, bingo and karaoke alongside the wet areas, R$50-90 depending on the day. Half sauna, half cabaret.
- Thermas Don Juan (República): the central standby, steps from the cruise clubs.
- Sauna Ricardo Jafet (Ipiranga): three storeys and a jacuzzi, R$45 Tuesdays and R$65 otherwise, afternoons only.
- Balneário Amazonas (Rua do Gasômetro 641, Brás): the mature house, three floors, R$70-85, open from 10 a.m.
- Hot Thermas Club, Le Rouge 80, Top Man Club, Sauna Xingu and Sauna Penha cover the neighbourhoods when you would rather not cross town.
- Condoms and lube are provided at every licensed venue; Brazilian law and habit are good on this.
- PEP is free in Brazil, for visitors too: any public emergency unit (UPA) or CTA testing centre dispenses it under the SUS public health system, effective within 72 hours. São Paulo's specialist address is the CRT-DST/AIDS on Rua Santa Cruz (Vila Mariana), which also offers free testing and PrEP; appointments are usually required for PrEP. Emergency number: 192.
- PrEP users: bring your supply. Doxy-PEP is not routinely dispensed by SUS; private clinics and pharmacies can help.
- Testing: rapid HIV and syphilis tests are free at CTA centres across the city; some venues host testing nights during Pride month.
- Pharmacies: major chains run 24-hour branches in the centre and on Paulista.
- Cards work everywhere, including the clubs; Brazil is heavily card- and Pix-based. Keep small cash for lockers and tips.
- Lockers: every club and sauna issues one at reception with a wristband key; phone, wallet and watch go in, and theft inside the venues is rare precisely because nobody carries anything.
- ID: the door checks a photo ID for 18+. A passport photocopy is usually accepted; keep the original in the hotel safe.
- Consent: a shake of the head or a hand moved away ends it, everywhere. Brazilian cruising is friendly and direct; "não, valeu" is a complete sentence.
- Drugs: possession is a crime and police do sweep the Centro. Brazilian clubs mostly run on beer and caipirinhas, which suits the hours.
- Outdoors: treat Ibirapuera and Arouche as places to meet, not to finish; the clubs are five minutes away and air-conditioned.
Two names from older guides need a caveat: Champion Club on Largo do Arouche and Clube 555 in Pacaembu were reported shut in 2025 listings. We have not been able to confirm a reopening; if you find either with the lights on, tell us.
When to go
Hours surprise Europeans: much of the scene peaks in the afternoon. The cinemas close at 9 p.m., most saunas by midnight, and the clubs that run late (Dédalos, The Graus, Upgrade, Rhinos on weekends) fill up again after the dance clubs empty at 5-6 a.m. A good weekday plan is Club Cine Hot or a sauna after lunch, Frei Caneca for dinner, then Dédalos whenever you like. Weekends add The Graus and RG late shifts. Sunday afternoon is quietly one of the best windows: the whole city is unhurried and the clubs are full of people with nowhere to be on Monday morning.
The calendar peaks twice. São Paulo Pride (next edition 30 May 2027) is the largest Pride on the planet, 3 million-plus people down Avenida Paulista, and for that week every venue in this guide runs at capacity. New Year's is the other pole, when The Week's NYE party anchors the continent's circuit season. Festival Mix Brasil runs 11-22 November 2026 and is the cultural counterweight. RuPaul's DragCon Brasil has come to the city, but its next dates are not announced yet. The quietest good month is March: full scene, no crowds, hotel prices at their floor.
Getting there and around at night
Every República-cluster venue is within ten minutes' walk of República metro (red and yellow lines); Rhinos and the Consolação side use Consolação or Paulista stations; RG is a short walk from Ana Rosa. The metro is safe and runs until midnight (1 a.m. on Saturdays). After that it is Uber or 99, which cost little and solve the street-safety question entirely. The one technique that matters: order the ride while you are still inside the venue, and step out only when the car is at the door. Standing on a Centro curb at 3 a.m. with a phone glowing in your hand is exactly the scenario to avoid. From the airport, GRU to the centre is about an hour by car; the CPTM train plus metro works by day. Hotels on Frei Caneca or around Paulista put you fifteen minutes from everything; see our gay-friendly hotels.
The apps and the local reality
Grindr and Hornet both run hot in Brazil, Hornet notably more than in Europe or the US, and São Paulo's density is unlike anywhere: thousands of profiles within a kilometre around Frei Caneca and República. Locals use the apps as a fast bridge to meeting in person, typically suggesting one of the venues above or a bar on Frei Caneca, the street so gay the mall on it is nicknamed "Shopping Gay Caneca". Portuguese helps but is not required; "local?" and a venue name carry most chats. A few words that do heavy lifting: pegação (cruising), cinemão (cruising cinema), ativo (top), passivo (bottom), versátil (vers), camisinha (condom) and de programa (working / escort). Scammers on apps exist as everywhere; never hand over your phone to "show a photo" and never follow a stranger to a car.
How a São Paulo night unfolds
Dinner and first drinks on Rua Frei Caneca or around the revived Largo do Arouche from 9 p.m. Then the split: dancing at A Lôca or Tunnel, old-school ballroom spinning at ABC Bailão, drag and a mixed crowd at Blue Space, or straight to the cluster. Whatever happens, Dédalos is open when everything else closes, which in this city is its entire philosophy. The full bar map is on our São Paulo bars page.

Nearby alternatives
If the Centro feels like too much, the Paulista-side pair of Rhinos and Espaço Lagoa gives you a full evening in a calmer neighbourhood, and Wild Thermas in Higienópolis is a short ride from either. For the fetish-minded, RG and the Eagle's theme nights are the two addresses. Beyond the city, Dédalos' new Rio branch (2026) means the São Paulo formula now exists on the coast too; see our São Paulo city guide for the rest of the scene, and the global cruising map for everywhere else.
Keep this page honest
We verify every listing against at least two current sources, and in this round we could confirm Dédalos, Upgrade, Club Cine Hot, The Graus, Rhinos and RG from 2025-2026 material; Cine República, Cabines Bar, Mini Week and the Eagle are flagged above because we could not. If you were there this month and a price, hour or address is wrong, or a door is permanently shut, use the "report a change" link on the venue's own page and we will update within days. Please do not send us photos of people; descriptions of the venue are all we need.
Frequently asked questions
Is cruising legal in São Paulo?
Yes. Brazil never criminalised homosexuality, marriage has been equal since 2013, and licensed sex clubs operate in the open. Public sexual activity remains an offence, so the clubs exist precisely so it does not matter.
What is the best cruising club in São Paulo?
Dédalos, and it is not close: 24/7, two floors, roughly R$34-58 (about $6-10), and a crowd at every hour. Club Cine Hot owns the daytime, The Graus the late weekend shift, Rhinos the Paulista side.
Where is the pegação in the Centro?
Within a few blocks of Praça da República: Dédalos (Rua Bento Freitas), Upgrade (Rua Santa Isabel), Club Cine Hot (Av. São João), Cine República (Av. Ipiranga) and The Graus (Rua Aurora), with Largo do Arouche as the open-air meeting point.
What is a thermas, and will someone expect payment?
Thermas are Brazil's big bathhouse complexes. In some, part of the crowd are garotos de programa, working men, and an approach often leads to a polite negotiation of rates rather than a spontaneous hookup. Nobody springs it on you; if you are unsure, a simple "você é de programa?" settles it politely.
Is São Paulo safe for gay travellers?
Very safe physically inside the scene; the venues are professional and the gay districts busy. The real-world risk is phone snatching in the centre at night: pocket the phone on the street and take ride apps door to door after midnight, and you are fine.
When is the best time to visit?
Pride (next on 30 May 2027), New Year's for circuit season, or Festival Mix Brasil in November. Everything in this guide runs year-round regardless.
