The Alaskan Hotel & Bar

It's hard to say "you get what you pay for" when everything in Alaska/Juneau costs far more than you're used to in the lower 48. I've stayed in some skeezy lodging in my day, and while this place wasn't the absolute worst, it's definitely ranking amongst those I'd reconsider booking again. See in my photos the notes I left housekeeping after my stay, but to summarize: The floors were dirty, with sunflower seed shells in the corners and other debris collecting elsewhere. Two light fixtures didn't work, the mini-fridge had spills, and I found mouse droppings on the supplied dishes. I wasn't in the position to complain on site (and the front desk seemed to only be open a few hours a day), so I just left the note. I had a room in the back of the building so outside noise wasn't an issue, but of course the bar noise was a known problem. Warned by the other reviews here, I spoke to the desk about it when I checked in. They told explained what events were happening during my stay and what hours they would be. It's a hotel above a bar that has live music, so it's going to be noisy. Just wear earplugs or book elsewhere. All that being said, I liked staying here—the bed was very comfortable (no bed bugs, I checked!) and the room was cozy—I wish it had been cleaner. (Additional note: I had packed a full-sized bed sheet with me from home to use at my next designation, and I guess I left it on the bedding when repacking my things. Alas. The Alaskan now has some of my linens.)

While the hotel’s location is excellent - right in the heart of Juneau’s tourist area - unfortunately, that was the only positive aspect of our stay. The convenience of the location simply does not outweigh the poor hospitality and lack of customer care we experienced. I normally enjoy supporting small independent businesses like this one, but this stay has made me seriously rethink where I choose to spend my money going forward. Having stayed in both luxury hotels and unique properties with character, I know that basic professionalism and genuine guest care should be standard regardless of price or style. Disliked · Upon our arrival to this property we made our way to our room only to discover it was not the Family Loft with two queen beds we had specifically booked. Instead, we were given a room with one queen bed and a pull-out couch. When I returned to the front desk, I was told the booked room was occupied by a long-term tenant and unavailable. While I understand availability issues can arise, the hotel had been in direct contact with me through the booking platform’s messaging system prior to our arrival and never mentioned this problem. It appeared they chose not to inform us, likely to prevent us from canceling. The pull-out couch was in poor condition, making it impossible for our adult family member to get a decent night’s sleep. The queen bed was also uncomfortable, with our feet elevated in an awkward position. The window was broken and OPEN at least 2 inches. We did not expect a luxury resort, but we did expect the room type we reserved. Most concerning was the staff’s response. Rather than showing empathy or offering solutions, they became defensive, blaming the booking company and stating the room had been unavailable for weeks. Since I booked December 6th, this lack of notification wasted our time and created unnecessary inconvenience. I politely requested compensation for just one night due to the inconvenience, which I believe was more than reasonable. Unfortunately, the hotel made no effort to resolve the situation or make things right despite my several follow-ups. Prospective guests should be aware: while the location may seem convenient, the poor communication, room inaccuracies, and indifferent customer service made this a frustrating experience we would not repeat. To make matters worse, the hotel was crazy loud until 3am due to the bar adjacent to the property, making rest nearly impossible. We will be visiting Juneau several times a year in the coming years with August 2026 being our next stay, sadly we cannot support this small business.

This is a review of the bar only. This place is legendary and legitimate, locals drink here when tourists aren't around. Walk in the front door, past the stage and stairs landing on your right, past the bar on your left. Greet the bartender and say you will be back for a drink in a moment. Continue walking to the back, where a game area is off to your left and the restrooms are off to your right, but go one step farther toward the wall and look on the right wall in the little alcove to the right. There are five photos. One of those photos, sandwiched between two others, shows two adventurous Juneau residents conquering a glacier. Gander, gaze, wonder, and then return to the bar. Ask for an Amber.

Odd place, very busy, difficult to get served.

Bar blasting goddamn EDM music until 3am. Could hear it all the way from the third floor. There's like 5 people in the bar during this whole time... Got almost zero sleep. Was told we had a queen bed, the thing was probably a full. No way to control the temperature in the rooms, was like 50 degrees in there. They won't let you book any of the rooms with history they say "staff only" i could work around all the other stuff but the music from the bar was straight disrespectful.

This is a place for a very specific type of traveler. My wife and I are no strangers to odd spots, which is partially why we booked this place. It is built into the side of a hill with no elevator, the hallways smell like 100 years of cigarettes, there is no AC, the showers left much to be desired, and it is on average more expensive than some other places nearby. This is what you are in for if you book here. But it also opens directly into downtown, has a rich and interesting history(HAUNTED), and is so typically Alaska it hurts. For that, it gets the stars it gets. But no, this isn’t a “”good”” hotel. Go to the Ramada if that’s what you want.

We had 3 guys, so we wanted 3 beds. We called and they said they could provide a room with a queen bed, a sofa hideaway, and a roll-away bed. We arrived at 9pm and there was no roll-away. On our way back to the office, we noticed a roll-away bed sitting in the hallway. We told the desk there was no roll-away in the room like promised, and he told us they did not have one available. We told him we saw one in the hallway and he didn't believe us. We showed it to him, and he said "oh, that one has bed bugs." Ew. We asked for our money back and slept at the airport. Each level of the hotel had its own unique, disgusting smell. While checking in, there was karaoke in the hotel and we could not hear anything from the desk. Lastly, we found out later from a lovely bartender in Juneau that the place is very haunted. DO NOT STAY HERE...EVER!

Historic, quirky hotel in downtown Juneau. Perfect location. No lift, so bit of a trek to the third floor with suitcases. Room was spacious and clean. A bit tired looking. Could have benefited from some proper curtains and a fan. No air conditioning. Bit of noise at night but nothing to write home about. Was disappointed the resident ghost didnt make an appearance.
