About this place Leons of Balto

Leons of Balto is a storied leather bar located in Baltimore's Park Avenue neighborhood, with a history stretching back to 1957. This venue has been a significant gathering place for Baltimore's gay community for generations, and its longevity speaks to its role in the local LGBTQ+ scene. The bar carries considerable cultural weight, having operated during an era when discretion was essential—the famous question "Are you a friend of Dorothy?" referenced Judy Garland's character in The Wizard of Oz and served as coded language to identify fellow gay patrons. What makes this venue particularly notable is the adjacent Leon's Backroom restaurant, which was originally purchased by the bar's owners as a practical solution for patrons who wanted to enter and exit discreetly without using the main entrance. This detail reflects the resourcefulness and community care of the establishment during a time when visibility could be risky. Today, this architectural arrangement remains part of the venue's unique identity and history. Visitors to Baltimore's gay bar scene will find this establishment offers an authentic leather bar experience with deep roots in the community. Whether you're interested in LGBTQ+ history, seeking out a venue with genuine character, or looking to connect with Baltimore's established gay community, Leons of Balto provides a window into the city's queer heritage. The bar's decades-long presence is a testament to its significance in the local landscape.

Very clearly a neighborhood bar. If you’re not local or don’t have friends with you don’t bother.

We're Latino guys, and we went there, but the bartender just walked right past us and never served us. The other people were staring at us when they saw we weren't being served. It was a bad experience.
