About this place Market Hotel

Market Hotel has been the anchor of Commercial Road's gay strip for years — the pub that defines the South Yarra end of Melbourne's traditional gay neighbourhood and provides a reliable, unpretentious social venue for the local gay community. Commercial Road between Chapel Street and Williams Road has been Melbourne's gay centre since the 1980s; Market Hotel's longevity on the strip reflects a genuine community embeddedness that goes beyond the comings and goings of individual venues. The pub runs across multiple bars and levels and provides the range of programming expected from a central gay hotel: DJ nights, themed events, drag entertainment, and the daily trade of regular drinkers and visitors to the strip. The crowd at Market Hotel tends toward the mixed mainstream gay demographic — gay men of various ages and subcultures, visitors to Melbourne's gay scene, and the local South Yarra and Prahran residents who have been coming to the strip for years. For visitors to Melbourne who want to experience Commercial Road's traditional gay strip, Market Hotel is the natural starting point.

Very nice studio room with a great view on 19th floor of the river. The gym is ok, the pool and jacuzzi really lovely. Breakfast also pretty good. I would have given 5 stars but for the internet being out nearly the whole weekend which made work challenging.

For the price - disappointing. On arrival (11.30am) from interstate told no early check in - come back at 2pm When in the room, no plug for sink. TV not working - had to call 3 times for someone to attend. Very noisy aircon fan. Staying 2 nights - no change of towels included in online price! Day 2, our access card did not work in the lift - another guest got us access to our floor! At breakfast, (Day 1) I asked for a tea pot (tiny cups that are not man hands friendly) to make my own tea but told that is not possible unless I order at extra cost. I asked for 11am checkout - told not possible as they were really busy. BUT if I paid an extra $20 that would be OK!!!! Go figure. The entrance to the hotel is via stairs - there is a stairlift for disabled access but you have to contact reception first. Good luck with that at busy times. Older guests will find it difficult to get luggage up the stairs - no concierge seen. Honestly, not impressed.

Booked studio apartment with twin bed. Room has a double seat sofa, desk and 2x chairs, fridge/freezer, oven, cooktop. Room is very clean and roomy. The lobby smells really nice. There’s a cafe in the lobby. Located right opposite W hotel. Free tram is just on the corner on Collins st. Southern cross station is abt 10mins away.

I had a very comfortable 2 night stay here at Oaks Melbourne on Market. The condition of the room upon arrival is very tidy and the rooms offer plenty of amenities such as a hair-dryer, safe, ironing board and plenty of cuppboard space. The beds are very comfortable, and the bathroom was nice offering a shower and bathtub in one. They also provide plenty of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion. The breakfast the hotel offers includes the standard continental side, with also extra options such as pastries, yoghurt and rice pudding. They also provide a chef that will cook eggs for you however you like them. Alongside that the breakfast also has plenty warm dishes on offer. I'd like to make a special mention to the service provided at the hotel. We ordered room service one evening (which was also very nice food). One dish we ordered was the apple pie which said on the menu it came with ice cream. When the dessert arrived without the ice cream we asked the gentlemen if this could be fixed and he politely helped us out - thank you for your service! The front desk also helped us with ordering taxis and storing our suitcases when needed. The staff during breakfast are also very friendly and hard-working as they constantly keep the area tidy and food and drink topped up for the guests. Down on lower floors is the pool, spa and gym. The spa is very warm and the pool is also nice, and pool towels are provided - however it did feel a bit claustrophobic and stuffy with no windows. Overall, a really lovely hotel that provides comfortable rooms, friendly staff and is conveniently located near a tram spot.

We spent 3 nights here as a couple with a teenager. We booked a 2 bed apartment but found that it didn't work for us due to not offering enough privacy and some maintenance issues. (Unfortunately the photos on the website didn't indicate that the doors were made of glass) I spoke with reception on the morning after our first night and they had absolutely zero trouble finding rooms that suited us, and they even took me to see the rooms before we were moved, to check that it would suit us. We were moved to interconnecting studio apartments, which worked much better. The only thing that could be improved on this is having handles on the interconnecting doors so they can be opened and closed easily. We ordered breakfast combos from the coffee station in the lobby and it took over 20 mins for 2 coffees and a juice. They could not substitute dairy milk for plant-based as part of the combo and just charge the 75c on top, which made ordering super confusing. We also ordered In-room dining for dinner. I ordered their fries, and they brought a plate of rice (an accent discrepancy when ordering), but when I checked, rice isn't even an option on the menu. They instead call the same dish CHIPS on page 3 and FRIES on page 4, which probably lead to the confusion. They gave us a $15 discount off our food for the mistake, which was unexpected and very kind. Things they did really well: Service from all staff Beds are really comfortable Pillows - both flat and puffy to choose from Cutlery - 9/10 autism-friendly Full-size shower products Great location but still very quiet Entire mocktail menu at the bar for non-drinkers Great value for money Things that could be improved: General maintenance of rooms Food & bev ordering and systems could be improved to reduce confusion for guests and staff Elevator 1, confusing being unable to swipe room cards on both sides (we saw multiple people ride the elevator and get off again at the lobby because they swiped the "wrong" side)
