About this place Apple

Apple is a gay bar located in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, situated in the Sezanne Building on the third floor. As a dedicated LGBTQ+ venue in Japan's cultural heart, it provides a social space for gay travellers and local patrons looking to connect and enjoy an evening out. Kyoto's gay scene offers a more intimate atmosphere compared to larger Japanese cities, with venues that cater to a range of preferences and crowds. Gay bars in the area tend to be welcoming spaces where visitors can expect a relaxed, social environment. These establishments are typically smaller and more personal than their counterparts in Tokyo or Osaka, making them ideal for those seeking genuine local connection and a quieter night out. For practical planning, Apple is accessible in central Kyoto near Shinchō in Shimogyo Ward. You can find more information about the venue through their website at http://apple1985.web.fc2.com/. As with many smaller bars in Japan, it's worth checking ahead for opening hours and any specific details about the venue's offerings. Whether you're a solo traveller, visiting with friends, or exploring Kyoto's LGBTQ+ community, this bar offers a local experience away from the tourist trail.

We loved it so much that we came twice. Once on a weekday, when it was quieter; once on a weekend, when it was very crowded. Yuji was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Like many bars, there's an entrance fee, which includes a drink and some light snacks. The bar isn't luxurious, but it's very cozy. Yuji has been running this bar for many years, and it was interesting to hear his story. He also gave us some sightseeing information and suggestions. When we returned, he even asked about our itinerary and sightseeing. The bar itself only seats about 12-16 people, so if it's full, you'll be turned away. It's not suitable for large groups. The bar has a private atmosphere that encourages conversation and meeting new people. It's exclusively for gay men. The karaoke is fun and has a wide selection. Once it starts, everyone sings along, creating a very lively atmosphere. Most of the customers are tourists from all over the world, so if you want to chat, laugh, and share stories with them, this is a good place to go. While smoking is allowed, please be aware of this if it doesn't suit your taste. I went alone and sat at the bar (the best place to sit in this venue). The owner, Yuji, welcomed me in English with a smile on his face and the characteristic kindness of Japanese people. Just two minutes later, I was already chatting with the couple sitting next to me. Highly, highly recommended place. 10/10

What a cozy little pub with lots of brown and a beautiful long bar. We were warmly welcomed by the owner, and what a great host he is! He is modest, friendly, professional, and has the gift of connecting people and ensuring it will be a wonderful evening. Go here if you are in the area.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. It has magic. The owner is adorable, the drinks are good, and the atmosphere is great. Feels like you are entering into a queer Japanese Indie Film ❤️

This was by far one of my favorite experiences in Kyoto. Yuji and Rui were very kind and the drinks were great. We also had tips of how to experience the city.

By food I mean, the Asahi beers I had. That was the most fun Ive had in ages. The small bar was full and everyone was participating in karaoke. Yuji, the owner, seemed so be having so much fun. Truly an unforgettable night. Just remember to bring cash!
