About this place Alter Wartesaal

Alter Wartesaal — the Old Waiting Room — occupies one of the most dramatically located venues in German nightlife: a 19th-century railway station waiting hall directly adjacent to Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof), with the cathedral visible from the entrance. The building's high ceilings, original architectural details and sheer improbability make it unique among gay clubs in Europe. Three floors operate on major nights, each with distinct musical programming. The main floor's Saturday night is the flagship commercial gay event in Cologne. During CSD week in July — when 1.2 million people come to Cologne — Alter Wartesaal hosts events that are among the highest-attended club nights in Germany. The location directly at the central station means accessibility is unmatched: you can arrive by train from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf or Berlin and be in the club within 10 minutes of stepping off the platform. For CSD 2026, buy tickets months in advance — events sell out.

Absolutely fantastic! We're here now and received a really warm welcome. We sat outside with seven people because we wanted to end our evening with cocktails. Our waiter, Arsenio, was incredibly friendly – five extra stars for him! The cocktails were perfectly priced and offered excellent value for money. They even gave us complimentary nuts, which was a lovely touch. The restroom was luxurious and spotless. Our group of friends highly recommends going there for cocktails.

I attended the "Boheme Sauvage" event at the Wartesaal am Dom restaurant – unfortunately, it was a very negative experience. I had previously notified them by phone about a milk allergy and communicated it again on-site. Despite this, I was served a dish containing potential milk. Only after I specifically asked was it confirmed that the food contained milk – by which time I had already eaten some and had to spit it out. This is not only unpleasant but also a health hazard. Particularly problematic: Lack of internal communication between the front of house and the kitchen The staff's uncertain and unprofessional response ("I'm not a chef") No transparent allergen labeling (no menu available) A dessert (sorbet) was served despite my explicit prior request to exclude it. While the organizers subsequently apologized and announced an internal review, a concrete statement or appropriate compensation for the incident is still pending. The organizers subsequently apologized and announced an internal investigation. Mistakes can happen – but dealing with known allergies is a safety-critical issue and shouldn't be left to chance. Therefore, I cannot currently offer any recommendations, especially for guests with allergies or intolerances.
