Catania: Sicily's Surprising Gay City
Most people heading to Sicily pick Palermo or Taormina and miss Catania. The city was rebuilt from scratch in baroque lava stone after the 1693 earthquake, and it sits right at the foot of Etna. A big university keeps its social life livelier than you'd expect for 310,000 people, and while the gay scene is small it is more out in the open than you might imagine — anchored by a historic bar, a dedicated cruise club, two saunas and an active Arcigay branch.
The veteran meeting spot is Hasta Siempre, the bar most locals still call Nievski, on the steps of Via Alessi at the edge of the centro storico — the natural place to start the evening and find out what is on. For a men-only cruise night, Codice Rosso on Via Conte Ruggero has been the city's dedicated gay cruising club since 2005. Two gay saunas keep going year-round: Le Terme di Achille (long known as Sauna Zeus) near the central station, and South Factory Club Catania, a larger sauna-and-cruise complex. Bigger dance nights are roving — the Gruppo Pegaso crew and parties such as Fallo è Bello take over clubs like Industrie down by the port — so it pays to check what is on that week.
In summer the scene moves to the sea: Le Capannine, a lido on the sandy Playa along Viale Kennedy, is the main gay-popular beach, with aperitivo and parties once the sun drops. The city's LGBTQ+ life is organised by Arcigay Catania, which also runs Catania Pride each summer — the corteo (Saturday 27 June in 2026) marches down Via Etnea, that long straight avenue pointing right at Etna's peak.

Catania suits a Sicily trip that mixes an easygoing gay scene with baroque streets, Etna (reachable by cable car and jeep) and Taormina 45 minutes away by train. The Pescheria fish market is one of the great sights of any Italian city, the street food is superb, and after midnight the empty lava-stone streets are among Italy's most atmospheric places to walk.
