Barcelona’s gay bar scene lives almost entirely in Gaixample. The streets around Carrer del Consell de Cent, Carrer de Casanova, and Carrer de Muntaner are a walkable cluster. You can do eight or nine bars in a single evening without a taxi.
Most bars here don't fill until midnight on weekends; 1am is normal. Show up at 10pm and you’ll find staff, but not much of a crowd. Come later. Weekdays are noticeably quieter. Wednesday and Thursday can still surprise you, but don't expect weekend energy.
Gaixample bars range from old-school neighborhood spots with drag shows and cheap gin and tonics to darker, more fetish-leaning bars near the sauna clusters. There's no single vibe. You pick based on what you want that night.
The bars
- Aire Sala Diana: This is a lesbian nightclub, though gay men are welcome. Music is modern, with electro-Latin hits. Aire (the women's club in the GRUPO Arena family) is a good place to start the night. You can get a stamp here that lets you into other Arena Group clubs free before 2am.
- : A fun gay bar in El Born. Famous for its mojitos and friendly staff.
- Arena Madre: One of Barcelona's oldest clubs. It hosts regular events and parties. A popular gay dance club for a young crowd. DJs play house and handbag music. Arena MADRE has regular striptease shows and go-go dancers. Open nightly, but weekends are busier.
- Arena VIP (Sala Tango)
- Bacon Bears Bar: Bacon Bears is always packed with hot, hairy bears from all over the world. Very friendly crowd.
- : Atame is a big bar with a dance floor. It draws a younger, campy crowd. Drag performances on Sundays.
- Berlin Dark: Hardcore fetish, men-only cruising. Leather, skin, sleaze. Dress code events happen.
- : Bim Bam Bum is a trendy bar with a club feel. It has a small dance floor, good music, videos, and lighting. Young crowd, live DJ.
- Botanic bar cafe: Botanic Bar Cafe is a popular gay spot for the LGBTQ+ community and allies. It's known for its inclusive environment, friendly staff, and social scene. It's a bar and cafe: by day, it’s a cafe with coffee and tea.
- Boyberry: A cruise bar with many play areas. Special events happen.
- : Boys Bar BCN is a well-established gay spot in Gaixample. It gets locals and tourists.
- Chiringuito BeGay: This chiringuito is on the nude beach "La Marbella." You can get coffee, cocktails, protein milkshakes, and food. It’s a good place to meet people.
- Club City Hall: Club City Hall Barcelona is a prominent gay spot. It's a nightclub, bar, and performance space.
- Club Trash: Club Trash BCN is a hardcore gay men-only fetish/cruising club. It has slings, a darkroom, cabins, playrooms, and a full bar. Not for the faint-hearted; check their website for event info (strict dress code).
- CROSS Meeting Bar: A classic gay bar where it's easy to meet people when the Valencian Nights start.
A few things to know
Drinks in Gaixample are reasonable by Western European standards. A gin and tonic runs €8–€12, depending on the bar. Some places have happy hour until midnight. Most places take cards, though a few prefer cash for small amounts.
The bars are safe, and staff are used to all kinds of travelers. Solo visitors are common. You won't feel out of place if you go in alone.
If you want to keep going after the bars close (most wind down by 3am), clubs usually run until 6am or later. Sala Apollo on Carrer Nou de la Rambla is a regular option. During Circuit Festival week, the official events take over. Check the Circuit program separately.
