Peak season for Ibiza accommodation (July-August) is among Europe's most expensive. That's not an exaggeration, or a warning just for luxury places. A basic mid-range hotel room in Ibiza Town in August costs what a really good hotel room in Barcelona or Madrid would. The island is popular with international tourists. Limited supply and concentrated demand means prices shock first-timers who haven't been told.
Ibiza Town
Ibiza Town is the better home base if you're mainly interested in the gay scene. You'll find everything from small guesthouses in the old town (Dalt Vila) to mid-range hotels near the port, and a few boutique spots. The old town places have atmosphere and you can walk to the gay venues. But they can be loud at night, being so close to the nightlife. For July and August, booking four to six months ahead is smart. The best places go even earlier.
San Antonio
San Antonio has more budget and mid-range accommodation than Ibiza Town, and it's usually cheaper. It's better if you plan to spend most of your time at mainstream clubs, not specifically gay venues. San Antonio feels more like a general tourist resort. Getting to Ibiza Town for gay venues from San Antonio means a taxi at night. It's fine, but it adds up over a week.
Rural villas and fincas
The island's interior has lots of rural villas and converted farmhouses (fincas) rented by the week. Groups like these for a private pool and more space than a hotel room. They use taxis or rental cars to get to clubs at night. It's a real, popular way to do Ibiza. You're away from the town centers, but you get a different kind of stay.
Cost management
June and September are much cheaper than July and August, and the season is still in full swing. If money's tight, these shoulder months give you a proper Ibiza experience for a lot less on accommodation. Late May is even cheaper, though some venues haven't fully opened yet. Prices drop fast in October as the season ends and many visitors leave, but the club scene has mostly wound down by then.
The hotels
- Hotel Ebeso — This modern hotel overlooks Figueretas Beach. It has some of the best facilities in this part of Ibiza Town. The Nautico Ebeso is a walk from the gay bars around Ibiza Old Town. The 19 m² guest rooms have minimalist styling, air conditioning, soundproofing, a flat screen TV, and an extra-long bed. Sea View rooms have a balcony with views of Figueretas Beach. This is a family-friendly hotel that still gets a good number of gay guests. The hotel has a swimming pool.
- — This art deco, adults-only Hotel Es Vive is near Figueretas Beach. It's about a 20-minute walk from Ibiza Town's gay nightlife. The hotel’s rooftop chill-out terrace has sea views. You can listen to cool Ibiza tunes by the pool, or get a spa treatment in the wellness center. Both the cocktails and music are mixed well in The Experience Bar. All the guest rooms, remodeled in 2015, are chic, soundproof, air-conditioned and have a flat screen TV.
- Hotel Ibiza Playa — Ibiza Playa is right on Figueretas beach promenade, just a 15-minute walk from the gay nightlife in Ibiza Town. The hotel has simply furnished but comfortable, air-conditioned guest rooms. Some have private balconies with sea views. It shares facilities, including an outdoor swimming pool, with the Mar y Playa next door.
- La Torre del Canónigo — La Torre (The Tower) sits on a hilltop, looking over Ibiza Town and the sea. Guest rooms in this historic building are air-conditioned and have comfortable beds, LCD TVs, and a minibar. Chef Pablo Diez cooks good Mediterranean food, but there are plenty of other restaurants nearby. The swimming pool and garden have spectacular views. It's one of the nicest spots in Ibiza for a sunset cocktail. Be ready for some uphill steps from the gay bars in town, or to pay for a taxi.
- Sirenis Hotel Club Tres Carabelas — The all-inclusive Sirenis Hotel Club Tres Carabelas is on the beachfront in Playa d’en Bossa. It's about a 30-minute walk to the gay venues in Ibiza Town, but quicker by bus (every 30 minutes). The hotel has outdoor/indoor pools with sun loungers, a restaurant, bar, gym, and spa. Each air-conditioned guest room has free WiFi, a flat screen TV, minibar, and private bathroom. Most rooms have sea views, and some include a balcony. Room service is available, and a daily buffet breakfast.
- THB Los Molinos — This has been a popular choice with gay travelers for decades. The adults-only THB Los Molinos is in a quiet part of Ibiza Town. It's a comfortable 15-minute walk from the gay nightlife, restaurants, and shops in Ibiza Old Town center. The air-conditioned guest rooms have satellite TV, free WiFi, and a safety deposit box. Many rooms have balconies with sea views. The hotel has a nice swimming pool and sun terrace, set in tropical gardens.
Practical notes
