Full joint adoption rights for same-sex couples were enacted in 2006. Trans rights are among the strongest in Europe: a 2017 law introduced gender self-identification without the requirement for surgery or sterilisation. Anti-discrimination protections cover employment, goods and services, education, and housing. A 2014 constitutional amendment explicitly prohibits discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation. Belgium scores approximately 88/100 on ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Index, placing it consistently among the top five LGBTQ+-progressive countries in the world.
