Last verified: November 2026. Brighton has one openly gay hotel, Legends Hotel on Marine Parade, which has its own bar and basement club. A few doors west is the city's unofficial gay hotel, the Amsterdam Hotel, whose ground-floor bar now trades as The Birdcage. We could not verify any men-only hotel or guesthouse in 2026; the men-only spaces in this city are the saunas. The rest is a dense ring of small Kemptown guesthouses, a couple of them gay-run, plus mainstream seafront hotels that have taken gay couples without comment for decades. Most losses have been bars: the Marlborough is now The Actors, and Subline's basement is now Nautilus Lounge. Among hotels, the design hotel My Brighton on Jubilee Street is listed as permanently closed. Hotel Pelirocco, the subject of a closure rumour, is open and taking bookings. This guide covers where to sleep so you can walk home from St James's Street, which places are actually gay-run, what UK hotel rules mean for bringing someone back, how Pride and Bear Weekend change booking, and how to get home at 3 am.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to St James's Street | Walk to the gay beach (Duke's Mound end) | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The gay hotel and its neighbour | Legends Hotel, Amsterdam Hotel | 1–4 min | 18–20 min | First-timers and party weekends. The bars sit under your bedroom; ask for a high floor or a back room if you want to sleep before 3 am. |
| Small Kemptown guesthouses | Brighton Wave, Ambassador Brighton, Hudsons Guest House (Devonshire Place) | 1–5 min | 15–21 min | Couples who want breakfast and a host who knows the bars. Rooms are small, stairs are steep, and weekend minimum stays are common. |
| Boutique on the strip | Nineteen, New Steine Hotel | 1–4 min | 16–21 min | A designed room without leaving the village. Nineteen's Courtyard Room with the hot tub sells out first. |
| Quiet east Kemptown | Blanch House, The White House | 6–10 min | 10–15 min | Light sleepers who still want to walk home. Closest to the beach and to the Kemptown Klub. The residential streets go dead after midnight, which is the point. |
| Seafront with a pool or spa | Queens Hotel and Spa, Leonardo Hotel Brighton (ex-Jurys Inn Brighton Waterfront) | 6–8 min (Queens), 14–16 min (Leonardo) | about 25 min (Queens), 32–35 min (Leonardo) | Points collectors and anyone who wants a lift and a 24-hour desk. Kings Road is the stag-and-hen side of town on Saturday nights. |
| Men-only | None verified in 2026 | n/a | n/a | No men-only hotel exists that we could confirm. Men-only means The Brighton Sauna on Grand Parade (4–8 min from the Marine Parade hotels) or The Boiler Room in Hove. |
| The Hove side | Hotel Pelirocco | 19–21 min | 38–40 min | Repeat visitors who prefer the quieter Western Street pubs (The Bedford Tavern is 5–7 min away). Getting home from Kemptown means a taxi, not a stroll. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
The walkable zone is small and flat, which is Brighton's great advantage. Its spine is St James's Street, which runs east from the Old Steine for roughly 600 m until it becomes St George's Road. South of it, a grid of short streets drops to Marine Parade and the sea: Steine Street, George Street, Broad Street, Madeira Place, Charles Street, Camelford Street, New Steine and Atlingworth Street. Almost every gay bar in the city sits inside that rectangle:
- The Zone and The Bulldog on St James's Street
- The Queens Arms on George Street
- The Marine Tavern on Broad Street
- The Camelford Arms on Camelford Street
- Bar Broadway on Steine Street
- Legends and The Birdcage on the front
- the New Steine Hotel
- the Ambassador at no. 25, 98 m from The Camelford Arms and 3–5 min from St James's Street
- The Charm Brighton Boutique Hotel & Spa at nos. 20–21
- Brighton Wave
- Nineteen
- Blanch House
- One Broad Street
- Guest and the City
- Colson House (17 Upper Rock Gardens)
- The Charm
- The Brighton Sauna at 75–76 Grand Parade, opposite the Royal Pavilion (entry about £18)
- Brighton Cruise Bar, in the same building
- The Boiler Room in Hove
- Guest registration. UK law requires hotels to record the name and nationality of every guest aged 16 or over, and for most foreign nationals the passport number too. Small B&Bs take this seriously because the owners live on the premises.
- Visitors and joiners. Joiner fees are not a thing here. Many Kemptown guesthouses do not allow non-registered visitors in rooms, though, especially overnight, and some say so in the house rules. A hotel with a 24-hour desk (Legends, the Amsterdam, Queens, Leonardo) will usually just ask the second person to register. The simple fix is to book the room for 2 guests from the start, even if you arrive alone, so the question never comes up.
- Tourist tax. None. As of November 2026, Brighton & Hove has no overnight visitor levy. The council leadership has lobbied for one, and in September 2026 the government announced that English mayors would get the power to set one, but it is not in force here. Prices include 20% VAT.
- Minimum stays. Small guesthouses commonly insist on 2 nights at summer weekends and 3 or more over Pride. Chains rarely do.
- Deposits and cancellation. Expect a card pre-authorisation at check-in. For Pride and Bear Weekend, many independents take non-refundable prepayment months ahead, so read the terms before you click.
- Noise. On Marine Parade and St James's Street, ask for a back room or a high floor. In a townhouse B&B the "sea view" room is often the noisy front room.
- Stairs. Most Regency townhouses have no lift and steep stairs to the top floor. If that matters, ask before you pay.
- the parade, from Hove Lawns through the centre
- the ticketed festival in Preston Park, about 2.5 km north
- the street party in Kemptown, which fills St James's Street
- West Street and the Kings Road junction at closing time: big straight crowds, occasional fights, heavy police presence.
- Madeira Drive below Marine Parade is dark and empty at night, so walk along the top on Marine Parade instead.
- The steep streets north of St James's Street are safe but empty.
- Duke's Mound after dark: the main risk is opportunist theft, so leave behind any phone or wallet you can't afford to lose.
- the Claude Nicol Centre, Outpatients Department, Royal Sussex County Hospital, Eastern Road, BN2 5BE (about 10 min north of the east end of St James's Street)
- SHAC Central, Morley Street, BN2 9RE
Revenge anchors the western edge on Old Steine, and The Kemptown Klub the eastern edge on St George's Road. From one corner to the other is about 15 minutes on foot.
What to avoid: the streets north of St James's Street climb hard. Upper Rock Gardens, Egremont Place and anything towards Queen's Park are proper hills, so a guesthouse "5 minutes from the bars" can be 5 minutes down and 10 back up. The station sits at the top of the town. The walk down Queens Road and West Street to the sea takes 15–20 min, and the walk back up with a suitcase is closer to 25.

Marine Parade, Legends to the Palace Pier
This is the front row. The Amsterdam Hotel at 11–12 Marine Parade faces the Palace Pier and has about 25 rooms. The Birdcage bar is in the building, so your walk to the nearest gay bar is the stairs, and our listings put St James's Street under a minute away. Legends Hotel is a few doors east at 31–34 Marine Parade (not 31–32, as some listings say), with around 40 rooms over five floors; The Zone is 2–4 min away. Both have sea-view rooms worth paying for. Their street-side rooms hear the A259 traffic and the smokers outside the bars. Patterns, a mainstream club at 10 Marine Parade, is next to the Amsterdam and empties noisily. At 3 am this stretch is busy and well lit, and it is the safest walk in the zone.
Broad Street, Madeira Place and the New Steine squares
One block back from the sea, the side streets are where the B&Bs are. Nineteen is at 19 Broad Street, 30 m from The Marine Tavern and 1–2 min from St James's Street. Brighton Wave at 10 Madeira Place is 34 m from The Birdcage by our listings and also 1–2 min from the street. Two gay-friendly guesthouses not in our listings are on the same 100 m: One Broad Street (8 rooms, owner-run) and Guest and the City (2 Broad Street, 7 rooms).
New Steine, the long Regency square running from St James's Street to the sea, has three options:
These streets are quiet by 1 am apart from people chatting on their way home. Expect narrow stairs and no lift in most townhouses. Front rooms at the northern end of the square catch the noise from St James's Street.

East Kemptown: St George's Road, Atlingworth Street, Bedford Street
East of Lower Rock Gardens, Kemptown turns residential. Blanch House on Atlingworth Street is 82 m from The Kemptown Klub and 6–8 min from the St James's Street bars. The White House on Bedford Street is 191 m from The Kemptown Klub (about 3 min) and 8–10 min from the western end of St James's Street. These two are the closest options to the gay beach, 10–15 min east along Marine Parade. The trade-off is that St George's Road is dark and quiet after the Klub closes. It is safe, but you will walk the last stretch alone. The Royal Sussex County Hospital, which has an A&E and the sexual health clinic, is about 10 min north on Eastern Road.
Old Steine and Kings Road
Queens Hotel and Spa at 1–3 Kings Road is 50 m from Doctor Brightons and 6–8 min from St James's Street across the Old Steine. It is a big, mainstream seafront hotel with a spa. On Friday and Saturday nights, Kings Road and the bottom of West Street fill with the city's straight club crowd.
Further west, the Leonardo Hotel Brighton (formerly Jurys Inn Brighton Waterfront) has an indoor pool. Doctor Brightons is 8 min away and St James's Street 14–16. Walking back to the Leonardo from Kemptown at 3 am takes you past the West Street closing-time crowd, so use the seafront promenade or take a taxi.

The Hove side: Regency Square to Western Street
Brighton's second, smaller gay pocket sits on the Brighton–Hove border. It has The Bedford Tavern and The Grosvenor Bar on Western Street, and Velvet Jacks on Norfolk Square. Hotel Pelirocco on Regency Square is 340 m from The Bedford Tavern (5–7 min) and 19–21 min from St James's Street along the front. Choose it if you want themed rooms and local pubs, not if you plan to close Legends every night. The Boiler Room sauna is further out near Hove station, a 30-minute walk or a short bus ride from Regency Square.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
Legends Hotel is the one hotel that markets itself as LGBTQ+. Booking.com describes it that way, and its bar and The Basement club downstairs are among the city's main gay venues. The Basement has DJ nights at least two nights a week, and the bar has a seafront terrace and cabaret. It is not men-only: women, trans guests and straight friends stay too. We could not confirm who owns it in 2026, but there is no doubt that it is a gay hotel.
The Amsterdam (now marketed as Amsterdam Hotel Brighton Seafront) has long been the unofficial gay hotel. We list it as gay-friendly rather than gay. Its bar, The Birdcage, is LGBTQ+ and open to non-residents, which is why the lobby is busy in the early evening. If ownership matters to you, confirm it before booking.
Gay-run guesthouses. Hudsons Guest House at 22 Devonshire Place, off the eastern half of St James's Street, is described as gay-owned in 2026 gay travel guides and had new guest reviews in June 2026. Doubles have been advertised from about £60 (US$80). The owners of The White House market it to gay travellers. These places are gay-friendly but not gay-only, and any "gay-owned" claim for them is unverified:
Men-only and clothing-optional: none. We could not verify a single men-only or clothing-optional hotel or guesthouse trading in 2026. If someone on a forum offers you a "men-only B&B", ask for the address and check it on the map before paying. The men-only spaces are:
None of them rent rooms overnight.
Day passes and non-guest access: the bars at Legends and the Amsterdam are open to anyone. Hotel spas such as those at Queens and The Charm are generally for residents or paid treatments; confirm before turning up.

Booking rules that bite
The gay calendar and where to book for it

Brighton Bear Weekend: 9–11 July 2027
The organising committee has confirmed Friday 9 to Sunday 11 July 2027, with an icebreaker quiz on Thursday 8 July. The 2026 edition ran 9–12 July. Events are spread across Kemptown bars, and The Camelford Arms is the natural bear base. Book on Broad Street, Madeira Place or New Steine. Kemptown rooms get tight about 3 months ahead, so book by April 2027.
Trans Pride Brighton: Saturday 17 July 2027
Organisers have confirmed 17 July 2027 for the 15th edition. It is a one-day march and gathering, part protest and part celebration. It falls the weekend after Bear Weekend, so Kemptown is busy two weekends in a row in mid-July. Prices rise but do not spike the way they do for Pride.

Brighton & Hove Pride: 2027 dates TBA
As of November 2026 the organisers have not published 2027 dates. Third-party calendars point to 30 July–1 August 2027; treat that as pencilled in until Brighton Pride announces it. The 2026 edition was Pride on the Park on 1–2 August in Preston Park, headlined by Diana Ross and RAYE. Reports that Jennifer Lopez will headline in 2027 are unconfirmed.
Three things happen at once:
If you are there for the street party, stay in Kemptown and don't expect much sleep. If you are going to the park, a hotel near the station is more practical, but note that in 2026 Preston Park and London Road stations closed from 17:00 on the Friday. Many Kemptown rooms for Pride go 9–12 months ahead, often to returning guests, and rates rise sharply. Book as soon as the dates are confirmed, on refundable terms if you can find them.
The rest of the year
Kemptown is busiest from May to September and quiet from November to March, when the guesthouses discount and some close for refurbishment. A Beefmince bear party is listed for early December 2026; confirm the date with the promoter.

Getting back at 3 am
From Gatwick: take the train, about 30 min to Brighton station on Thameslink or Southern. Fares vary, roughly £10–£20 off-peak (confirm on National Rail). Late-night services are thin, and weekend engineering works often replace trains with buses, so check your date. From Brighton station to Kemptown is a 15–20 min walk downhill or a 5-minute taxi from the station rank. From Heathrow, plan on a coach or a train via London; neither is quick.
From the bars: inside the Kemptown rectangle you walk. Marine Parade and St James's Street are lit and busy until the clubs close. Uber works in the city, and local licensed firms such as Streamline Taxis and City Cabs take app and phone bookings (confirm current apps before you travel). Expect waits after 2 am on Saturdays and during Pride week. There are taxi ranks around the Old Steine. Brighton & Hove Buses runs a limited night network from the Old Steine area; check routes in the operator's app.
Streets to think about:
Health, safety and the law
Sexual health, PEP and PrEP: the NHS sexual health service runs from two sites:
Both offer walk-in and booked appointments, and the service aims to see you within 2 working days. For PEP, go to a clinic as soon as possible; out of hours, the A&E at the Royal Sussex County on Eastern Road can start it. PrEP is free on the NHS for UK residents; visitors should ask the clinic and bring their own supply. For a chat or support, Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard and MindOut are both at Community Base, 113 Queens Road. The Ledward Centre is the city's LGBTQ+ community centre.
App dates: meet in a bar first; Kemptown makes that easy. If you bring someone back, have the room booked for 2 so there is no confrontation at the desk. Keep valuables in the room safe and tell a friend where you are. We could not verify a 2025–26 pattern of app robberies in Brighton, but the method is the same everywhere: the "date" brings a friend or drugs your drink. Report anything to Sussex Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
Drugs and chemsex: cannabis is illegal in the UK. Methamphetamine is Class A; GHB/GBL and mephedrone are Class B. Possession can mean arrest. Hotels will call the police and evict you without a refund if they find drugs or are called to a medical emergency involving them. Poppers are widely sold, but the legal position is murkier than the shops suggest.
Smoking: banned in all enclosed public spaces, including hotel bars, and almost every hotel bans it in rooms too. Smoking or vaping in a room usually triggers a cleaning charge set out in the booking terms.
Public sex: sex in a public lavatory is an offence in England, and sex anywhere you are likely to be seen can be prosecuted as outraging public decency. Duke's Mound has been a cruising ground for decades, and police do patrol it.
The law in general: same-sex marriage is legal. Under the Equality Act 2010, a hotel cannot lawfully refuse a same-sex couple a double bed. Brighton is one of the safest places in Britain to be visibly gay. Trans rights remain a live political argument in the UK, which is part of why Trans Pride exists.

Three picks
Budget: Legends Hotel. On 2026 comparison sites, off-season rates started from about £37 and were commonly around US$95 (about £70). That is cheap for a seafront room in the middle of the village with the bar downstairs. Accept the noise as the price of the location, or ask for a high floor. If you need something cheaper still, the a&o Brighton Beach hostel is popular with gay travellers; check how far it is from Kemptown before booking.
Mid-range: Brighton Wave. A small, highly rated guesthouse on Madeira Place, 1–2 min from St James's Street on a side street quiet enough to sleep. The owners will move breakfast after a late night, which in Kemptown matters more than a sea view.
Splurge: Nineteen. Book the Courtyard Room with its private outdoor hot tub. You are 30 m from The Marine Tavern and 1–2 min from the village, and the room is a reason to stay in, not just somewhere to sleep between nights out. Book well ahead for summer weekends.
Frequently asked

Is there a men-only hotel in Brighton?
No, not that we could verify in 2026. Legends is the one hotel that markets itself as LGBTQ+, but it welcomes everyone. The men-only spaces are the saunas and the cruise bar.
Which hotel is closest to the gay bars?
The Amsterdam, which has The Birdcage bar in the building, and Legends, which has its own bar and The Basement club. Nineteen and Brighton Wave are 1–2 min from St James's Street.

Is there a gay beach in Brighton?
Yes, unofficially: the pebble stretch below Marine Parade towards Duke's Mound, east of the Palace Pier. It is 10–15 min on foot from the White House or Blanch House, and 18–20 min from Legends.
Does Brighton have a hotel or tourist tax?
No, not as of November 2026. A visitor levy has been discussed, and in September 2026 the government announced that mayors would get the power to set one, but nothing applies to Brighton stays yet. Room prices include 20% VAT.

Can I bring a guest back to my hotel?
At larger hotels with a 24-hour desk, usually yes, if your visitor registers. Small guesthouses often ban non-registered visitors, so book for 2 guests from the start.
When is Brighton Pride 2027?
The dates had not been announced as of November 2026; the expected weekend is 30 July–1 August 2027. Book in Kemptown as soon as the dates are confirmed, because rooms go 9–12 months ahead.
Is Hotel Pelirocco closed?
No, it is open and taking bookings. It is a gay-friendly mainstream hotel on Regency Square, 5–7 min from The Bedford Tavern and about 20 min from Kemptown.
