Last verified: October 2026. Amsterdam has fewer gay hotels than its reputation suggests, and almost none of the men-only kind. In late 2026 the honest count is one small gay-owned, gay-managed hotel on Kerkstraat (Amistad) and two old gay institutions that now take everyone. The first is the Anco in the old centre, which began as a men-only leather hotel in 1962. The second is the ITC on the Prinsengracht. Then there is the former Golden Bear, Amsterdam's first gay hotel from the early 1950s, which has been straight-owned under the Quentin brand since 1 October 2013. The Orion on Reguliersdwarsstraat no longer appears as an operating hotel. Everything else is mainstream. In a country where hotels may not legally turn away a same-sex couple, that is less of a loss than it sounds. This guide covers which of the two gay clusters to sleep beside, what each hotel really is now, the tax and visitor rules, the 2027 calendar, and how to get home when the trams have stopped.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Amsterdam's gay map has two centres about 1.3 km apart, 18–22 minutes on foot through Rokin or Kalverstraat.

The southern centre is Reguliersdwarsstraat, the bar street between Koningsplein and Vijzelstraat (SoHo at 36, Club NYX and Exit at 42, BLEND at 41, Café Montmartre at 48). It also takes in the western end of Kerkstraat (Spijkerbar at number 4, Club Church at 52) and the Rembrandtplein edge (Lellebel and Bar Nate on Utrechtsestraat, Free Willie at Amstel 178).

The northern centre is the old town: Warmoesstraat (Dirty Dick's at 86, the Eagle at 90, RoB at 71), Zeedijk (Café 't Mandje at 63, The Queen's Head at 20) and the streets west of Damrak (Sauna Nieuwezijds, The Cuckoo's Nest, Bears Amsterdam, Drake's).

Pick the cluster you will end your nights in. If you are torn, the line between them (Rokin, Spui, the Dam end of the Singel) puts you roughly 10 minutes from each. Amsterdam is flat, so walking times hold. The real hazards are bicycles in the red lanes and canal edges without railings.

Kerkstraat and Reguliersdwarsstraat

This is the only place in the city where you can sleep inside the gay strip. Amistad at Kerkstraat 42 and the Quentin Golden Bear at Kerkstraat 37 face each other. Both are 1–2 minutes from Club Church and 3 minutes from Spijkerbar. Reguliersdwarsstraat is a 6–8 minute walk east, along Kerkstraat and up Leidsestraat or Vijzelstraat.

Between the bars Kerkstraat is residential and quiet by 2 am on weeknights. On Friday and Saturday the noise comes from Church's queue and Leidsestraat's late crowd, not music through the walls. At 3 am this is one of the safer walks in the centre: lit, short and busy. Both buildings are 18th-century canal houses with steep stairs and no lift worth relying on, so travel light. There is no hotel on Reguliersdwarsstraat itself in our listings, and the old Orion at number 30 is gone.

Leidseplein edge

Quentin Amsterdam on Leidsekade and Hotel Freeland on Marnixstraat are 4–5 minutes from Spijkerbar and 9–14 minutes from Reguliersdwarsstraat. Leidseplein is the city's tourist nightlife square: stag groups, chain bars and the odd scuffle after closing. It is fine for a short walk home and tiring as a view, so ask for a room at the back. Freeland is owner-run with fifteen rooms. Quentin's reviews keep naming size, upkeep and noise.

Warmoesstraat, Zeedijk and the old centre

The Anco at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 55 is close to everything here:

Mauro Mansion has nine rooms on Geldersekade. It is 1–2 minutes from The Queen's Head, 5–7 minutes from Warmoesstraat and 5 minutes from the station. At 4.7 on Google it is the best-reviewed small hotel in this guide.

The trade-off is the Red Light District. Oudezijds Voorburgwal is a window canal, crowded with groups on weekend nights, and pickpockets work Damrak and Warmoesstraat. Since 2023 the windows have closed at 3 am and bars in the district shut earlier at weekends. It is quieter after 3 than it used to be, but front rooms still hear the street. Geldersekade, on the Nieuwmarkt side, is calmer than the Voorburgwal.

Two mainstream hotels (not in our listings) sit between the clusters. Sofitel Legend The Grand at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197 is about 7 minutes from Warmoesstraat and 9–10 minutes from Reguliersdwarsstraat; its restaurant is Bridges. The Ambassade Hotel at Herengracht 339, home of Brasserie Ambassade, is about 7–8 minutes from Reguliersdwarsstraat and 14–15 from Warmoesstraat.

    Prinsengracht by the Amstel

The ITC Hotel at Prinsengracht 1051 is the quiet option with gay history. The nearest queer bar is Bar Buka on Albert Cuypstraat, 3–4 minutes away and run for queer women. On Utrechtsestraat, Bar Nate and Lellebel are about 15–17 minutes away, and Reguliersdwarsstraat is 18–20. The walk back along the Prinsengracht is pretty and nearly empty at 3 am, which most people find restful rather than worrying. Some rooms look over the canal and some share bathrooms, so check what you are booking.

    Museum quarter and Oost

The Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium on Paulus Potterstraat sits by the Van Gogh Museum. It is roughly 18–20 minutes on foot from Reguliersdwarsstraat via Spiegelgracht, and further from the old centre. The Vondelpark is close.

Hotel Casa on Eerste Ringdijkstraat is near Amstel station and 19 minutes from Oosterpark, but far from everything else on foot. Take the metro from Amstel to Weesperplein and walk to Rembrandtplein. Treat it as a base for full weeks, not for bar crawls.

    Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Gay-owned: Amistad is the one hotel currently described as gay-owned and gay-managed. It has nine rooms, and the building's gay history goes back to the 1970s. The crowd is mixed LGBTQ, not men-only, and everyone is welcome.

Men-only: none we can confirm for 2026. The Anco opened in 1962 as a men-only leather hotel with its own bar, and some gay press still calls it gay men only. Current gay listings call it a former men-only hotel, though, and reviews over the past decade report straight couples staying. Treat it as a hotel with gay history and a mostly gay crowd, and confirm the policy by email before you book. Expect some rooms with shared showers.

Gay history, now mixed: the ITC has run as a gay hotel for decades and still draws mostly gay men, but it markets itself as gay-friendly to all. The Golden Bear was Amsterdam's first gay hotel, from the early 1950s. The Quentin group took it over on 1 October 2013, and it is now a straight-owned budget hotel with a lot of backpackers.

Gone: the Orion at Reguliersdwarsstraat 30, which older listings called men-only, and The Bulldog Hotel on Oudezijds Voorburgwal are no longer in our listings as operating hotels. Older guides also name men-only leather hotels on Warmoesstraat and Geldersekade from the 1990s and 2000s. We found none of them operating in 2026.

Clothing-optional: there is no clothing-optional hotel or guesthouse in Amsterdam. Naked time happens in venues instead:

Not in our listings and unverified: the Townhouse Hotel at Prinsengracht 816, a sister property of the ITC, and van Ostade Bed & Breakfast, a small De Pijp guesthouse that advertises in the local gay press. Ask both directly who they cater for now.

    Booking rules that bite

    • Tourist tax is a percentage, and it is rising. In 2026 Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the net room price, with 21% VAT added on top. Hotel VAT rose from 9% at the start of 2026. The city coalition announced plans in 2026 to raise the tourist tax to 16% in 2027, then by 1% a year to 20% in 2031. Check whether a quoted price includes both taxes, because OTA headline prices often do not.
    • ID at check-in. Dutch hotels keep a guest register and will ask every registered guest for a passport or EU ID card. Bring yours, and expect the same of anyone added to the room.
    • Visitors. No Amsterdam law stops you bringing a man back, and no hotel may treat a same-sex guest differently. Small canal-house hotels do enforce house rules, though. Overnight visitors usually have to be registered and may be charged as a second person. Some places have no night reception, so you get a door code rather than a desk. The simple fix is to book for two guests from the start. Then no visitor question comes up and the tax is already in the price.
    • Stairs. Amistad, the Golden Bear, the Anco, Mauro Mansion and the ITC are all in old canal houses with steep stairs, near-ladders in places. If mobility matters, ask in writing for a low floor, or book a modern block.
    • Smoking. Smoking indoors is banned in Dutch hotels, and cleaning charges for smoking or vaping in rooms are common. Check the house rules for the amount.
    • Peak weeks. Small hotels often set minimum stays and non-refundable rates for Pride week and King's Day. Read the cancellation terms before paying.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Leather & Fetish Pride (just passed)

The 2026 edition ran 15–18 October across Warmoesstraat and the old centre. Dates for October 2027 had not been announced as of October 2026. When they are, book the Anco or Mauro Mansion first, because anything within 10 minutes of the Eagle goes early.

International Queer & Migrant Film Festival

IQMF runs 4–6 December 2026 at LAB111 on Arie Biemondstraat in Oud-West (some listings say it starts on 3 December). It puts no pressure on hotels. Hotel Freeland and Quentin Amsterdam are the closest hotels in this guide, about 15–20 minutes on foot.

    Roze Filmdagen

Roze Filmdagen, the city's LGBTQ film festival, runs 9–21 March 2027 at Het Ketelhuis on the Westergasfabriek site. March is low season, so booking a week or two out is enough.

    King's Day

King's Day falls on Tuesday 27 April 2027. It is not a gay event, but the whole city parties outdoors, the canal ring fills up and the gay bars spill onto the street. Book a couple of months ahead.

    Pinkster Tennis Tournament

Smashing Pink holds its LGBTIQ+ tennis tournament every Pentecost weekend. The 2027 dates are TBA.

    Milkshake Festival

Milkshake is a queer-inclusive commercial dance festival in Westerpark, not a pride. The organiser has not confirmed 2027 dates (TBA), though the city tourism site lists 24–25 July 2027. Freeland and Quentin Amsterdam are the closest of our hotels, and even they are a tram ride away.

    Amsterdam Pride

Pride Amsterdam runs 31 July to 8 August 2027, confirmed by the organiser. 2026 was WorldPride (25 July to 8 August). The Canal Parade is traditionally on the first Saturday of August, which would be 7 August 2027; confirm on the programme before you plan around it.

The parade runs along the Prinsengracht and the Amstel. That puts the ITC right on the route, where canal-view rooms are the prize, and Kerkstraat is 1–2 minutes from the Prinsengracht. The street parties are on Reguliersdwarsstraat and around the Amstel and Rembrandtplein. Small gay hotels fill a year out, so book as soon as rates load. If you are late, take Hotel Casa or anything near a metro stop and accept the ride. There are no official Pride partner hotels in our listings. In 2026 Bear-Necessity ran a Saturday-night party and a Sunday T-dance on Pride weekend; the 2027 edition is not yet listed.

    Getting back at 3 am

From Schiphol. NS trains run from Schiphol to Centraal all night, hourly after midnight. The trip takes about 15 minutes and costs about €6–7 (US$7–8). For Kerkstraat, bus 397 runs from Schiphol to Leidseplein and Elandsgracht from about 05:00 to 01:00 and takes around 30 minutes. The N97 night bus runs to Centraal hourly, between about 01:00 and 05:00. A taxi to the canal ring costs roughly €50–70 (about US$55–80); use the official rank or an app.

In the city. Trams stop around 00:30 and restart at about 06:00. In between, 11 night bus lines run from Centraal, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein, but only hourly, so within the centre walking is usually faster. Uber and Bolt both work, and regular taxis queue at Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein and Centraal. Until the trams stop, trams 4 and 24 run along Rokin between the two clusters.

Walking. Kerkstraat, Reguliersdwarsstraat and Utrechtsestraat are lit and busy until late. Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein are where drunk groups end up at closing, so keep moving. Damrak and the Red Light alleys are pickpocket country. Canal edges have no railings, and every year men fall in after stopping to pee into a canal at night. Use a urinal. Watch the cycle lanes, even at 4 am.

    Health, safety and the law

Sexual health. GGD Amsterdam's Centre for Sexual Health (CSGA) is at Nieuwe Achtergracht 100, 1018 WT. It handles STI testing and questions about PrEP and PEP. The results line is 020 555 5822, open Monday to Friday in office hours. PEP must start within 72 hours, so out of hours go to a hospital emergency department; OLVG Oost by the Oosterpark is the closest to the centre. The GGD PrEP programme is aimed at residents, so visitors should bring enough of their own. Man tot Man, the national health site for gay men, lists testing options in English.

Dating apps. Amsterdam has a recurring problem with lure dates. In December 2025 a 23-year-old Amsterdam man was sentenced to 10 years for a series of armed home robberies in Amsterdam and Haarlem, targeting men he met on Grindr. On 31 October 2026 police announced the arrest of two men in their 20s. They are suspected of luring a 61-year-old man with an intellectual disability through a dating app and assaulting him on the night of 20–21 September. Some simple rules:

    • Meet first in a bar.
    • Bring dates to your hotel rather than going to an address you don't know.
    • Tell someone where you are.
    • If he asks you to come to a different address from the one agreed, end the date.

Drugs. Cannabis is tolerated only through licensed coffeeshops, up to 5 g per person; The Otherside on Reguliersdwarsstraat is one. Smoking cannabis on the street in the Red Light District is banned, with fines of around €100, and street drinking is banned across the old centre. Everything else (GHB, ecstasy, cocaine, crystal, ketamine) is illegal to possess, and nitrous oxide is banned too. Hotels can call the police and charge for damage if chemsex goes wrong in a room. If you use, never mix GHB with alcohol, and never use alone.

The law. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 1 April 2001. Anti-discrimination law covers goods and services, hotels included, and legal gender change has no medical requirements. Visible affection on the streets of the centre is normal. Outdoor cruising is tolerated at named spots such as the Nieuwe Meer under local rules, so follow the signs.

Three picks

Budget: Hotel Freeland. Fifteen owner-run rooms, a 4.1 rating the cheaper Quentins cannot match, and 4–5 minutes to Spijkerbar. If you want the shortest possible walk to Club Church and can forgive the upkeep, take the Golden Bear on Kerkstraat instead, 1–2 minutes away.

Mid-range: Amistad hotel. The city's one gay-owned, gay-managed hotel, on Kerkstraat, 1–2 minutes from Church and 7–8 from Reguliersdwarsstraat. Book direct and ask the hosts what is on that week.

Splurge: Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium. You stay for the spa and pool, with the museums outside the door. If you would rather walk home from both scenes, Sofitel Legend The Grand on Oudezijds Voorburgwal is the better-placed five-star, roughly 7–10 minutes from each cluster.
