Welcoming

Buffalo’s LGBTQ+ life has a clear center: Allentown, the historic arts district just north of downtown. It’s a compact, walkable city, and refreshingly affordable. After a tough stretch during the pandemic, when several long-running venues closed, the scene has been rebuilding. It’s anchored by a few dependable gay bars, a lively calendar of queer parties, and one of the most protective legal environments in the United States. Nightlife here feels local and unpretentious, not like a strip of tourist traps.

Allentown, centered on Allen Street and its meeting point with Franklin Street and Elmwood Avenue, is Buffalo’s arts-and-nightlife quarter and the heart of its gay scene. Tree-lined and full of Victorian storefronts, galleries, and dive bars, it holds the city's biggest concentration of LGBTQ+ venues within a few walkable blocks. Elmwood Village to the north and the downtown Theatre District (Main Street and Chippewa) round out the queer-friendly map, but Allentown is where you should start.

Buffalo has three currently-open gay bars, all in or near Allentown. Fugazi (503 Franklin Street) is the easygoing anchor—a casual corner bar with pool, darts, and a patio that draws a mixed gay crowd nightly. Twenty Six, usually written simply as "26" (26 Allen Street), reopened in 2023 in the former Cathode Ray space under ex-staff of that beloved bar. It runs as an LGBTQ+ party bar in the middle of the Allen Street strip. Underground Niteclub (274 Delaware Avenue), on the edge of downtown, is the dance-and-drag option, with weekend drag shows, karaoke, and theme nights. Buffalo’s historic anchor, Club Marcella, closed for good in 2023, so don't go looking for it.

Some of the best queer nights in Buffalo are traveling parties, not fixed venues. Sleaze Ball, an indie-sleaze drag-and-dance party from the DJ duo Business Woman Special, lands regularly at Nietzsche's (248 Allen Street), a well-loved Allentown music venue that's welcoming to all. Buddy Buddy is a roving queer house-and-techno series that books guest DJs, and First-Friday drag showcases pop up across the district. The Pride Center of Western New York keeps a community events calendar that pulls all of these together.

To be clear: Buffalo has no gay bathhouse. The city's long-running gay sauna closed years ago over code enforcement, and nothing has replaced it. If you’re looking for that, plan for Toronto or another larger city. Likewise, there's no well-documented, reliably safe public cruising scene worth listing here; the queer social life happens in the bars and at the parties.

Buffalo Pride is organized by the Pride Center of Western New York (with support from Evergreen Health) and takes place in June. The weekend typically pairs an Allen Street festival in Allentown with a Pride parade and a festival down at Canalside on the waterfront; the 2026 edition ran on the first weekend of June. Buffalo has been chosen to host Gay Bowl XXVII, the national gay flag-football championship, in October 2027—a major event that will bring thousands of LGBTQ+ athletes to the city.

There's no gay hotel, but plenty of well-located, welcoming options. Downtown puts you a short walk or rideshare from Allentown: the Westin Buffalo, Hyatt Regency Buffalo, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown, and the boutique Curtiss Hotel are all clustered on or near Delaware Avenue and Franklin Street. For something with more character, the InnBuffalo off Elmwood is a restored 1898 mansion B&B in Elmwood Village. The Richardson Hotel (in the landmark Richardson Olmsted complex, formerly Hotel Henry) sits near Buffalo State and the Elmwood strip.

Buffalo is easy to get around. The NFTA Metro Rail runs a single line up Main Street from Canalside to the University at Buffalo's south campus, and buses cover the rest. Allentown, downtown, and Elmwood Village are all close together and walkable, though most visitors use a car or rideshare in the evenings.

New York is one of the most LGBTQ-protective states in the country. Same-sex marriage is legal, and comprehensive anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodation, reinforced by the state's 2024 Equal Rights Amendment. New York is also a legal "shield" state for gender-affirming care, protecting patients, families, and providers from out-of-state legal action. Buffalo is a welcoming city, and ordinary big-city common sense is all you need.

Frequently asked questions

Buffalo's LGBTQ+ scene is centred on Allentown, the historic arts district around Allen Street and its junction with Franklin Street and Elmwood Avenue, just north of downtown. It holds the city's gay bars within a few walkable blocks; Elmwood Village and the downtown Theatre District are secondary queer-friendly areas.

Buffalo has three currently-open gay bars, all in or beside Allentown: Fugazi (503 Franklin Street), a casual corner bar; Twenty Six or "26" (26 Allen Street), an LGBTQ+ party bar in the former Cathode Ray space; and Underground Niteclub (274 Delaware Avenue), the city's main gay dance-and-drag venue. Nietzsche's, a nearby music venue, hosts queer parties such as Sleaze Ball. The historic Club Marcella closed in 2023.

Buffalo Pride takes place in June, organised by the Pride Center of Western New York with support from Evergreen Health. The weekend usually combines an Allen Street festival in Allentown with a Pride parade and a festival at Canalside on the waterfront.

No. Buffalo has no gay bathhouse - the city's long-running gay sauna closed years ago over code enforcement and nothing has replaced it. Travellers looking for that would need to head to a larger city such as Toronto.

Yes. New York is one of the most LGBTQ-protective states in the US, with legal same-sex marriage, comprehensive anti-discrimination protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity, and shield-law protection for gender-affirming care. Buffalo is a welcoming city; ordinary big-city common sense is all that is needed.

The main one is the Pride Center of Western New York (206 South Elmwood Avenue), part of the Evergreen Health network, which organises Buffalo Pride and runs year-round programming. Evergreen Health provides LGBTQ-focused and HIV-inclusive healthcare, and GLYS Western New York supports LGBTQ+ youth from its Delaware Avenue drop-in centre.
