Big Jones, on North Clark Street, serves Coastal Southern food in Chicago, run by openly gay chef Paul Fehribach.
Fehribach’s cooking pulls from Creole traditions, but he’s not just copying old recipes. He’s got a real thing for sustainable, local ingredients, so the menu changes with what he can get. Expect dishes like shrimp and grits or jambalaya, but done with a careful hand that honors both the South and the Midwest's bounty.
The fact that it's an LGBTQ+-owned spot isn't just a label here. It means the place feels genuinely welcoming, no matter who you are. The hospitality is classic Southern: warm, generous, and never rushed. You get proper portions, too, which is always a good sign.
North Clark Street has plenty of places to eat, but Big Jones stands out. It's a chef-driven restaurant with a clear point of view on sustainability and a queer owner, making it a natural fit for anyone looking for good food and a comfortable space. If you're after real Southern cooking or just a solid neighborhood restaurant that does things right, this is it.

Our server was Lucas! He was so kind and helpful. The gluten free skillet cornbread was incredible and the gluten free catfish was delicious as always. My friend got an omelette with hash browns that she loved. Huge portions, Lucas brought us to go boxes and we each had a lunch for the next day with our leftovers! Lucas also brought us hot sauce and was just so kind and friendly. Perfect way to start our summer break as teachers!
Nice spot in a beautiful neighborhood. Food is fresh and quickly made. Happy hour isn’t advertised with its own menu, but it includes half off beers and usually one wine, double cheeseburger (no fries), savory cornbread skillet, and $12 fried chicken (two pieces, light or dark meat). I have tried to call them during open hours and not only are their hours out of date on the recording, they don’t answer the phone or listen to recordings left.
My go to for dinner Love this place and the service is top notch
Service was decent. Food not so delicious, but im only one ctitic
Great food. Very crowded, sat in the way back & we did have reservations.
gorgeous hidden patio and delightful staff- thanks so much!! 😁 we demolished okra, fried chicken, and catfish at happy hour
My family and I had a wonderful time dining at Big Jones the other evening. The service was amazing and the food was somehow even better. The Chef presented unique flavor profiles that were instant winners. We highly recommend and Sweet Potato Biscuits and Shrimp & Grits. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we will definitely be returning.
