About this place Women & Children First

Women & Children First, a queer-owned independent bookshop, has been in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood since 1979, a landmark for the LGBTQ+ community, especially lesbian and feminist readers.

It’s one of the oldest such businesses in the country, and still a meaningful stop for anyone wanting to support queer spaces and find books by and for women and LGBTQ+ authors.

The shop’s selection leans toward feminist literature and lesbian perspectives, an honest resource for readers who want real representation. A small kids' section makes it family-friendly too.

Expect the warm, knowledgeable vibe common to good independent queer bookshops: staff who love their inventory and are happy to recommend something. Check their website for hours or author appearances.
