What reviewers say

Visitors frequently praise the ryokan's excellent location and the helpful, polite staff, describing it as a welcoming oasis. However, some guests found the traditional Japanese-style rooms to be cramped, particularly when the futons were laid out, and noted that bedding was sometimes only folded rather than properly stored.

The Riokan is fantastic, but there was a slight odor in the area where our rooms were. The service is excellent, and they organize activities, tastings, etc.

Great hotel for the price! Rooms were on the smaller side but it felt very cosy. We had the futon beds which you do have to make yourself, but there are clear instructions on how to prepare futon, it's very easy. It was very clean too, albeit slightly dated around the bathroom / entrance area. Location was brilliant too, you're very close to the center of Kyoto here. I would recommend this ryokan if you are looking for a clean, budget stay in Kyoto!

Perfect location, close to everything. It's a shame we only stayed one night. But we made the most of it.

The staff's service was poor. It felt like they were catering exclusively to foreigners. For example, when I asked if they could lay out the futon for me, they said that normally guests are expected to do it themselves. When I asked if they didn't offer a service to lay out the futon, they said they did. They seemed very unwilling to help, which I think is unacceptable service. Also, when I called the front desk to ask if they had mobile phone chargers for rent, they put me on hold to check, and after waiting for 2-3 minutes, they asked me what my call was about. Even when I explained that I had been waiting because they were checking if they had chargers, they just said, "Oh, really? Yes, we do," without apologizing for the wait or showing any concern about the lack of proper handover. Even if it's customer service for foreigners, I think it's unacceptable.

Everything was perfect, a great balance between modern and traditional. Clean, elegant. Traditional rooms. We enjoyed the traditional breakfast one day. The staff was very kind in helping us pack our bags and booking local activities. I recommend it and would gladly stay here again. We hadn't realized we had to make our own beds and ask if we needed help, so the first night was a bit strange.
