Colombo: Life Under the Law
Colombo's a city changing fast. Glass towers line Galle Face Green, and there's a good restaurant and arts scene in Colombo 3 and 7. There's a big diplomatic and NGO community here, and people are more globally connected than the old Penal Code would suggest. The law is the reality, though, even if many educated city people think differently.
Any LGBTQ+ scene in Colombo is small, and it stays out of sight. on Galle Road is one of the more established gay-friendly spots in Kollupitiya / Colombo 3. in Colombo 7 feels more private, more discreet, in the upscale Cinnamon Gardens. Neither has any LGBTQ+ branding. People find out about them through apps and word of mouth.
Equal Ground
Equal Ground (equal-ground.org) is Sri Lanka's main LGBTQ+ rights group. They're based in Colombo. Since 2004, they've worked on decriminalisation, community support, mental health, and documenting rights violations. If you're visiting Colombo and need support, legal info, or a community connection, Equal Ground is the place to go. Think about supporting their work.
Where to Stay
The Shangri-La Colombo (Galle Face), Hilton Colombo (Lotus Road), Cinnamon Grand (Galle Road), and Marriott Colombo are all international chains. They have non-discrimination policies and we recommend them for LGBTQ+ visitors. All are in the Colombo 1–3 corridor, by the water, close to Kollupitiya. Don't stay in local guesthouses unless you have specific, trusted recommendations.
The Southern Coast
The southern beach towns — Unawatuna (2.5 hours from Colombo), Mirissa, and Tangalle — make good day trips or short stays. They're more relaxed socially because so many international tourists visit them. Several guesthouses in Unawatuna are known to be gay-tolerant. Use the same basic discretion you would in Colombo, but it should feel a bit more comfortable.
