La Cage aux Folles

After its success at Châtelet, the musical comedy La Cage aux folles is back, directed by Olivier Py, with Laurent Lafitte! American composer and lyricist Jerry Herman had his first success in 1964 with Hello, Dolly! In 1983, he triumphed again on Broadway thanks to La Cage aux folles. With the complicity of Harvey Fierstein, author of the musical's libretto, the two defenders of LGBTQIA+ rights freely adapted Jean Poiret's play and created an original work which, by crossing the Atlantic, became an ode to diversity. Far from being confined to the clichés conveyed by theater or cinema, the new French production of La Cage aux folles, translated and directed by Olivier Py, recontextualizes the work: the cabaret. On stage, Zaza sings and dances, but in town, the artist raises the question of same-sex parenting and declares the unconditional love of a parent for a child, beyond gender assignments. Because we have the right to be ourselves!
