A wardrobe of one's own. Dissident femininities in the 19th century
About the event
[Paris, Paris, Paris] Lesbian Friendly - Queer Friendly - Exposition -
This autumn, the Palais Galliera presents the exhibition « A wardrobe of one's own. Dissident femininities in the 19th century » and highlights a still largely unknown phenomenon: the appropriation, by 19th-century women, of the masculine clothing codes of their time.

Conceived as a response to normative approaches to femininity in fashion exhibitions, A wardrobe of one's own. Dissident femininities in the 19th century aims to fill a significant gap in fashion history. The exhibition reveals how the increasing adoption of masculine wardrobe codes accompanied a desire for profound transformation in the place of women in 19th-century society, particularly in France and the Anglo-Saxon world.
