July 26th, 1985: Hollywood heartthrob and closeted gay man, ROCK HUDSON, sends a shockwave through American culture by announcing his diagnosis with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. From AIDS activists fighting for their lives, to movie stars in Hollywood, and politicians at the highest levels of government, there’s a marked change in how the disease is perceived. For some, there is a glimmer of hope for the first time that a cure can be found. Later, with ROCK on his deathbed, the spirit of KEITH HARING casts a spell to convene ELIZABETH TAYLOR, MATHILDE KRIM, and RONALD REAGAN so they can perform a ritual to help ROCK find peace.
Created by six composers and five librettists, PLAGUE MASS explores what connects us in a time of crisis across divisions of power, class, and sexual identity.
