Bari: Puglia's Growing Gay Scene
Bari is not a major gay destination yet — but it is becoming one. Puglia's regional capital has developed rapidly as a tourism hub, and the large university has driven a generational shift in social attitudes. The LGBTQ+ scene is small: Sottovento in the Libertà neighbourhood is the main venue; Spazio Murat on the waterfront is where cultural and Pride events are held. Bari Pride in July draws from across the region.
The city's real attractions are its extraordinary old town (Bari Vecchia — a labyrinth of lanes around the Romanesque Basilica di San Nicola), the Adriatic seafront, and its position as a base for Puglia: Alberobello's trulli, the Baroque of Lecce, and the beaches of the Salento coast are all within reach. Come to Bari for the city and its setting; the gay scene is a bonus.
Pride 2026
Bari Pride: 11 July 2026. March from Piazza Umberto I to the waterfront. Expected 10,000 participants from across Puglia. The backdrop of the Adriatic and the medieval old town walls is one of the south's most distinctive Pride settings.
