The honest summary: Rennes has one gay club, two gay saunas, a busy LGBTI+ centre and one of the oldest Prides in France. The club is Le Batchi on rue Vasselot, open on Friday and Saturday nights. The saunas are Carré Rouge (men only) and Sauna California (gay days plus mixed sessions). Most of the queer week happens at Iskis, the community centre, which also runs the June Marche des Fiertés. There is no gay bar open in the evenings any more and no gay district. Brittany's capital is a student city of about 231,000 people, 1h25 from Paris by TGV.

Where the scene actually is

There is no gay street in Rennes. The places that matter are spread across the centre, all within about 20 minutes' walk of each other. Le Batchi is on rue Vasselot, just south of Place des Lices. Iskis is in the Parc des Tanneurs, north of the old town. Sauna California is near the station, and Carré Rouge is a short bus ride north of the centre.

The student bar strips, rue Saint-Michel (the "rue de la Soif") and the bars around Place Sainte-Anne and the Champ-Jacquet, are mainstream. They are relaxed places for same-sex couples, and on Pride day the After Pride takes over the Champ-Jacquet bars, but none of them is a gay bar.

The club: Le Batchi

Le Batchi (34 rue Vasselot), "le Bat'" to regulars, has been the city's gay club since the 1980s. It is small: one bar, a compact dancefloor, pop and electro, and a local crowd of mixed ages. Google lists it on Friday and Saturday nights from midnight until around 07:00. Privateaser and other listings describe free entry with a door policy. Its old website now forwards to Instagram (@lebatchi), where nights are announced.

Saunas

Sauna Carré Rouge (15 rue de la Donelière) is the men-only option, with a hammam, dry sauna, cabins, a maze, a bar and an outdoor terrace used naturist-style in summer. Gay guides mention reduced prices for under-30s and themed naturist and foam nights. Hours differ between sources, roughly noon to late evening, so check before going.

Sauna California (7 rue de Léon, near the station) is spread over several floors with a jacuzzi and video lounge. Older guides marked it as possibly closed; it isn't. Its own calendar is busy. Monday, Wednesday and Sunday are gay all day, Friday and Saturday are gay until early evening, and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights are "TTC" (toutes tendances confondues), which means mixed and open to couples. Check the day's theme on saunacalifornia.com.

Community and organisations

Iskis – Centre LGBTI+ de Rennes (6 rue Saint-Martin) was founded in 2001 and has been in the Parc des Tanneurs since 2018. Its weekly drop-in is on Wednesday evenings. The calendar includes gay and lesbian brunches, trans, bi and ace/aro groups, a book club and film nights. In December it runs Regard(s), a queer film and culture festival (8–13 December 2026).

Other groups worth knowing: Ouest Trans (trans and non-binary peer support), GLS Rennes (the LGBTQ+ sports club, which also runs the TIGRE tournament), Ludiqueer (queer board games and role-play, meeting at Iskis) and Le Refuge Bretagne (housing and support for LGBT+ people aged 18–25). For sexual health there is the AIDES office at 43 rue Saint-Hélier, with free rapid tests, and the free public CeGIDD clinic at Pontchaillou hospital for tests, PEP and PrEP.

Pride and events

The Marche des Fiertés is organised by Iskis and has been held since 1994. In 2026 it was on Saturday 20 June: the associations' village opened at 11:00 on the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, the march left at 14:00, and the day ended with the After Pride and the Noz Pride party ("noz" is Breton for night). The prefecture counted about 12,000 marchers in 2024; organisers said 15,000. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.

The rest of the year, look at our Rennes events page, which pulls in the Iskis calendar, the sauna programmes and drag nights listed by Drag France. Drag shows move between mainstream bars and halls rather than having one home.

Cruising

Cruising guides still list the Parc du Thabor and the Étangs d'Apigné. Both are busy family places first. Public sex is a criminal offence in France (exhibition sexuelle), so the legal options are the two saunas and the apps.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

L'Attrape-Rêve (37 rue Saint-Melaine) was the city's last LGBT bar, known for drag bingo. It has closed, and Privateaser now lists it as "Fermé". The address is now Maelstrom, a gaming bar with no LGBTQ+ connection. The Funky Munky, at the same address before it, is long gone too.

L'Insolite and Diablo.Q on rue Dupont-des-Loges are closed. Là-bas Jour, at the same address, still turns up in some gay guides, but we could not find any sign of it operating in 2026. L'Extaz (rue d'Antrain), La Fée Verte (rue Legraverend) and L'Âne à Thèmes are also closed, though misterb&b-style directories still show some of them.

Practical tips

Getting there: TGVs from Paris Montparnasse take about 1h25. Rennes–Saint-Jacques airport (RNS) is about 7 km south-west of the centre, with domestic and some European flights.

Getting around: the centre is walkable. Two métro lines run through it: line a (VAL) and line b (Cityval, opened in 2022), plus STAR buses and the vélo STAR bike share.

Where to stay: the old town and the area around République are closest to Le Batchi and the bars, and the station area is handy for Sauna California and day trips. See our Rennes hotels; they are mainstream hotels, none of them gay-run.

Day trips: Saint-Malo is about 50 minutes by train, Mont-Saint-Michel about an hour by road, and the Brocéliande forest at Paimpont about 40 minutes west.

Timing: Le Batchi only opens at weekends, so plan Friday or Saturday night for going out. The Saturday morning Marché des Lices is one of the biggest markets in France.

FAQ

Is there a gay bar in Rennes?

Not in the evening sense. L'Attrape-Rêve, the last LGBT bar, has closed. Le Batchi is a gay club that opens on Friday and Saturday nights, and Iskis runs daytime and evening community events during the week.

Are the gay saunas in Rennes open?

Yes, both. Carré Rouge is men only. Sauna California has gay days (Monday, Wednesday, Sunday, and weekend afternoons) and mixed TTC sessions on other evenings.

When is Rennes Pride?

In June, usually on a Saturday. In 2026 it was on 20 June from the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.

Is Rennes safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. France has full legal equality, and Rennes is a young, left-leaning university city where same-sex couples are an ordinary sight. Use normal city sense late at night, as anywhere.

Where can I get tested or get PrEP in Rennes?

The CeGIDD at Pontchaillou hospital offers free tests, PEP and PrEP. AIDES on rue Saint-Hélier does free rapid HIV and hepatitis tests.
