San Diego has a good range of accommodation and the prices are lower than San Francisco or Los Angeles while the weather is arguably better. For a visit focused on the LGBTQ+ scene, Hillcrest is the most convenient base — most of the bars and restaurants are walkable, and the neighborhood has a genuine residential feel rather than just being a tourism zone.

Downtown is a solid alternative if you want more hotel variety or lower prices. The Gaslamp Quarter is active at night, and Hillcrest is a 10-15 minute rideshare away. If you're splitting a trip between the gay scene and sightseeing at places like the zoo, Balboa Park, or the harbor, downtown positions you better for those daytime activities.

Where to Stay

Hillcrest

The core neighborhood for LGBTQ+ visitors. Smaller hotels, B&Bs, and apartment rentals make up most of the accommodation here. Staying on or near University Avenue puts you walking distance from essentially everything on the gay scene. Hillcrest is quieter than downtown at night — the bars close at 2am and the streets calm down quickly after that — making it good for sleeping as well as going out.

North Park and Mission Hills

Both neighborhoods border Hillcrest and are walkable to it. North Park has a younger, arts-oriented vibe and a good restaurant scene. Mission Hills is residential and quieter. Accommodation in both neighborhoods tends to run slightly cheaper than Hillcrest proper. If you want to feel like a local rather than a tourist, either of these works well as a base.

Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter

More hotel options, larger chains, and often lower per-night rates than boutique Hillcrest options. The tradeoff is that you're further from the gay scene. For a mixed trip that includes convention center events, harbor activities, or the broader downtown restaurant scene, this is the practical choice. Rideshare to Hillcrest takes about ten minutes and costs a few dollars.

Mission Bay and Pacific Beach

If you're combining the trip with beach time, Mission Bay and Pacific Beach are about 15 minutes northwest of Hillcrest. Accommodation here ranges from budget beach hotels to more comfortable options. Good for the beach; not the most convenient for the gay scene. Rideshare makes it workable if you're spending days at the beach and evenings in Hillcrest.

The Hotels

    • Hillcrest Inn San Diego — Gay-friendly hotel in the heart of Hillcrest on 5th Avenue — comfortable rooms, walking distance to all of Hillcrest's bars and restaurants, and the ideal base for exploring San Diego's gay neighbourhood.

    Booking Tips

San Diego Pride in mid-July is the only period where Hillcrest accommodation books up significantly in advance. Plan two to three months ahead if you're visiting for Pride. The festival at Balboa Park draws tens of thousands of people, and the Hillcrest hotels fill up accordingly.

Outside of Pride, San Diego hotels are available with reasonable notice. Summer is the busiest season overall for the city, so July and August rates are higher across the board. Spring and fall offer the best combination of good weather and reasonable prices.

San Diego has a solid Airbnb and VRBO market in Hillcrest and surrounding neighborhoods if you prefer apartment-style accommodation. A flat in Hillcrest is often a good value for a week-long stay.
