Last verified: October 2026. Los Angeles has no gay hotel left. The Coral Sands Motel on North Western Avenue was the city's gay men's motel for years, with a pool and Jacuzzi in the courtyard. It is now listed as permanently closed. The old San Vicente Inn in West Hollywood was once a men's resort. It stopped being gay more than a decade ago and later closed as a hotel. We could find no men-only or clothing-optional guesthouse open in the city in 2026. The nearest thing is a private room with a gay host on misterb&b-type platforms. So every bed in this guide is mainstream and gay-friendly, and what matters is location. LA's gay life is split four ways. West Hollywood is a separate city with its own 16.5% hotel tax. Silver Lake and East Hollywood have bars and bathhouses. Downtown has a cluster of Latino gay bars, and North Hollywood has a few venues in the Valley. These areas are 25–45 minutes apart by car, so the hotel you pick decides which scene you get. This guide covers which streets are walkable at 3 am, the taxes that inflate the bill, the 2027 Pride weekends, and how to get home.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood | Walk to the nearest Eastside or Downtown gay bar | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| On the strip (WeHo) | Ramada Plaza West Hollywood, Kimpton La Peer, Le Parc Suite Hotel, Chamberlain West Hollywood (none in our listings; confirm before booking) | 0–10 min | Not walkable, 25–40 min by car | First trip, Pride, Halloween. Watch-out: 16.5% tax, and rooms facing Santa Monica Blvd are loud on weekend nights. |
| Above the strip on Sunset | Andaz West Hollywood (not in our listings; still trading in October 2026) | 10–13 min downhill, longer back up | Not walkable | Rooftop pool, Sunset Strip clubs. Watch-out: La Cienega and the side streets between Sunset and Santa Monica are steep. |
| Beverly Grove, the southern edge | Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, Elan Hotel, The Orlando, SLS Beverly Hills | 15–30 min to Robertson Blvd | Not walkable | People who want a quieter bed and the City of LA's slightly lower tax. Watch-out: a 20-minute walk home is fine at midnight and dull at 3 am; most take a car. |
| Eastside budget | PodShare Los Feliz | Not walkable | 9–11 min to Eagle LA, about 17 min to Akbar | Solo travellers on a budget who prefer leather bars and dives to the WeHo strip. Watch-out: open-plan pods, so no privacy and nobody back to the room. |
| Downtown | Millennium Biltmore, Miyako Hotel, Freehand Los Angeles, Luxe City Center | Not walkable, 30–45 min by car | About 7 min (Biltmore) to 23–26 min (Luxe) to Precinct | Conference trips, Metro access, Latino gay bars. Watch-out: some blocks east of Main Street are grim after dark. |
| Luxury, out of the scene | Hotel Bel-Air | Car only, about 20 min without traffic | Car only | A splurge with gardens and a swan lake. Watch-out: you will pay for a car every night out. |
| Airport and Valley | LAX Marriott, Courtyard LAX, Hampton Inn & Suites Sherman Oaks | Car only | Car only (Sherman Oaks is about 8.6 km from Club Cobra) | Early flights, the April 2027 cruise, a car-based Valley trip. Watch-out: nothing gay within walking distance of any of them. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
Only one part of Los Angeles lets you go between bars on foot all night: Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood between La Cienega Boulevard and Doheny Drive. The city calls this stretch the Rainbow District. The busiest corner is Robertson Boulevard, where The Abbey sits just south of Santa Monica. If your bed is within a 10-minute walk of that mile, you never need a car. North of it the land rises sharply to Sunset Boulevard. South of it, Melrose Avenue and Beverly Boulevard are quiet after midnight.
The second walkable area is much smaller: Sunset Junction in Silver Lake, where Santa Monica Boulevard meets Sunset. Eagle LA (4219 Santa Monica Blvd) and Akbar (4356 W Sunset Blvd) are an 8–10-minute walk apart, and the bathhouse and cruise club are further south. Downtown has a third cluster around Main Street and Broadway in the Historic Core. Everywhere else (North Hollywood, Highland Park, Boyle Heights, Venice) has a single bar or two, and you need a car.

West Hollywood: Santa Monica Boulevard and the side streets
None of the hotels in our listings is inside West Hollywood itself, yet this is where most gay visitors should sleep on a first trip. The hotels that work are on or just off the boulevard:
- The Ramada Plaza at 8585 Santa Monica Blvd, between La Cienega and Robertson, a few minutes from the bars. Recent reviews warn that rooms facing the boulevard are noisy.
- Kimpton La Peer on La Peer Drive, which actively markets itself to LGBTQ guests.
- Le Parc Suite Hotel on West Knoll Drive, south of the boulevard.
- The Chamberlain on Westmount Drive, north of the boulevard.
- Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills (8555 Beverly Blvd): 15–20 min, west on Beverly and north up Robertson. The closest of the four, and the highest-rated (4.6 from about 5,900 reviews).
- Elan Hotel (8435 Beverly Blvd): about 20 min. Breakfast included.
- The Orlando (8384 W 3rd St): 25–30 min. Family-owned boutique hotel on a quiet street.
- SLS Beverly Hills (435 S La Cienega Blvd): 25–30 min. Design hotel, now in Marriott's Luxury Collection.
- Precinct at 357 S Broadway: drag, and a rockier crowd than WeHo.
- The New Jalisco Bar at 245 Main St: Latino crowd, cumbia and banda.
- Bar Franca at 438 S Main St.
- La Cita on Hill Street, a mixed dive bar.
- Millennium Biltmore (Pershing Square): 6–7 min to La Cita, about 7 min to Precinct. The closest downtown hotel to the bars.
- Miyako Hotel (328 1st St, Little Tokyo): 7–9 min to The New Jalisco, 13–15 min to Precinct.
- Freehand Los Angeles (416 W 8th St): 13–15 min to Precinct. Private rooms and bunk rooms, rooftop pool.
- StaysPro Cityscape (601 E 2nd St): 13–15 min to The New Jalisco. Serviced apartments with little on-site service.
- Luxe City Center (opposite L.A. Live): 23–26 min to Precinct. Good for an arena concert, less so for the bars.
- Royal Pagoda Motel (995 N Broadway, Chinatown): 31–35 min to the nearest gay bar. A cheap bed near Union Station, but too far from the bars to use as a base.
- Coral Sands Motel, 1730 N Western Ave, East Hollywood. For decades a gay men's motel with rooms around a pool and Jacuzzi. Now listed as permanently closed on Yelp and GayCities, with reports that a developer has taken over the building. If an online travel agency still sells it, do not book.
- San Vicente Inn, 845 N San Vicente Blvd, West Hollywood. The men's resort became San Vicente Bungalows. Guests were already reporting in 2014 that it was "not gay anymore", and it no longer operates as a public hotel.
- Ramada Plaza West Hollywood was never a gay hotel. For years it was the default choice for gay visitors because it sits on the boulevard. It is still open as a mainstream chain hotel.
- Mainstream WeHo hotels. Kimpton La Peer goes furthest in marketing to LGBTQ guests.
- Private rooms and apartments with gay hosts on misterb&b. Many West Hollywood and Silver Lake listings say clothing-optional is accepted. Check the host's rules on visitors before you book.
- For a men-only space, the bathhouses rather than a hotel. FLEX has the pool and hot tub a gay resort would have. North Hollywood Spa requires membership.
- Two different tax regimes. In the City of Los Angeles (Beverly Grove, Downtown, Silver Lake, LAX) the hotel tax is 14%. Hotels with 50 or more rooms add a tourism district assessment of about 2%. Voters rejected Measure TT in June 2026, which would have raised the 14% to 16%. In West Hollywood the bed tax is 12.5%. The city's tourism district assessment rose from 3% to 4% in 2026, and hotels may pass it on, so count on about 16.5% on top of the room rate.
- Online-booking loophole closed. Measure TC passed in June 2026. Online travel companies must now pay the City of LA's tax on the full price you pay, not on the discounted rate they pay the hotel. Expect online prices for City of LA hotels to rise slightly.
- Destination and parking fees. Under California's all-in pricing law (in force since July 2024), the advertised room price must include mandatory resort or "destination" fees. Compare the total, not the headline rate. Parking is extra, often about US$40–70 a night in WeHo and Downtown.
- Visitors and ID. US hotels do not register visitors or charge joiner fees, and nobody at a WeHo hotel will ask who came back with you. The lead guest needs photo ID and a credit card at check-in, and many hotels require the lead guest to be 21. Expect a card hold of about US$50–200 a night for incidentals. On a debit card the hold takes longer to be released.
- The golden tip. If you are travelling as a couple, book two guests. It costs nothing extra at most hotels, gets you both keys, and avoids any extra-person rule. Hostels and pod hotels are the exception: places like PodShare do not want guests in the sleeping areas, so assume no visitors.
- Smoking. Nearly every hotel is non-smoking, and that includes cannabis. Cleaning fees for smoking in a room are often several hundred dollars.
- Peak weekends. At WeHo Pride, LA Pride and Halloween, WeHo hotels set minimum stays of two or three nights and stricter cancellation terms. Read the cancellation deadline before you pay.
- Santa Monica Blvd between La Cienega and Doheny.
- Sunset Blvd in Silver Lake between Eagle LA and Akbar.
- Broadway and Spring Street around Precinct, with company.
Le Parc and the Chamberlain are on residential streets a block or two from the boulevard, which is the best compromise: 3–8 minutes to the bars and quiet at night. Confirm current rates and fees directly. WeHo rooms on a normal weekend run about US$250–450, more at Pride and Halloween.
At 3 am the boulevard itself is busy and well lit. The sheriff's department polices West Hollywood under contract and patrols it. Muggers on Santa Monica Boulevard are not the main risk. The risks are walking up dark residential streets with your phone out, and car break-ins if you drove.
The Sunset Strip
The Andaz West Hollywood at 8401 Sunset Blvd is the old "Riot House" rock hotel. It is still open as of October 2026, with mixed recent reviews about dated rooms. From there to Santa Monica and La Cienega is roughly 10–13 minutes on foot, downhill. Coming home it is uphill on La Cienega or Kings Road, so most people take a car back. Choose the Strip for the rooftop and the views, not for the walk.

Beverly Grove: just over the city line
Just inside the City of Los Angeles, around the Beverly Center, four hotels in our listings sit on the southern edge of West Hollywood. Our walking estimates to Robertson Boulevard and The Abbey:
The walk is flat and safe. But Beverly Boulevard and Robertson are dead after 1 am, and the last 10 minutes are on unlit residential blocks. Walk up for the early part of the night and take a car home after closing.
Silver Lake, Los Feliz and East Hollywood
The Eastside has the leather and bear crowd, the arty queer bars and the bathhouses. Eagle LA and Akbar are the main bars at Sunset Junction. FLEX Spas is at 4424 Melrose Ave, open round the clock, with a pool and Jacuzzi. Slammer is at 3688 Beverly Blvd. There is also Hi Tops Los Feliz on North Vermont, and the Latino club Club Tempo on Santa Monica Blvd at the East Hollywood end.
There are few hotels here. The only current one in our listings is PodShare Los Feliz at 4534 Fountain Ave, a pod hostel with shared bathrooms, rated 4.2. Walking times from there: 9–11 min to Eagle LA, about 17 min to Akbar, 19–22 min to the centre of the Eastside cluster and about 20 min to FLEX. The Coral Sands Motel at 1730 N Western Ave used to be the obvious gay bed here, and it is closed. Most gay visitors who want the Eastside book a private room or apartment in Silver Lake or Los Feliz.
At 3 am, Sunset Boulevard through Silver Lake is fairly well lit and has some people about. Santa Monica Boulevard east of Vermont, and Western Avenue around Hollywood, are rougher, with homeless encampments and little open. Walk the short hop between the Eagle and Akbar, and take a car for anything longer.

Downtown: the Historic Core and Little Tokyo
Downtown has the most hotels in our listings and its own small gay cluster:
Silver Platter, one of the city's oldest LGBTQ bars, is further west in Westlake on 7th Street. Go by car.
The downtown hotels, with walking times to the bars:
Downtown at 3 am, plan your route. Broadway, Spring and Hill between 2nd and 7th are fine with company. The blocks east of Main and south of 3rd, towards San Pedro Street and Central Avenue, are Skid Row. Do not cut through them between Little Tokyo and the Historic Core. Walk along 1st or 2nd Street instead, or take a car for the 5-minute ride.
The Valley, Highland Park and the airport
North Hollywood has Club Cobra, Bullet Bar and the members-only North Hollywood Spa on Vineland Ave, all near the North Hollywood Metro station. The closest hotel in our listings is the Hampton Inn & Suites Sherman Oaks, 8.6 km away, so you will need a car. In Highland Park, La Boheme Living is a glamping site with only nine reviews, 42–45 min on foot from The Offbeat. The two LAX hotels are for flights and the cruise; the nearest gay bar is over 8 km away.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
As of October 2026 we cannot confirm any hotel or guesthouse in Los Angeles as gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional. Here is what happened to the ones people still ask about:
Where gay guests actually stay:
Booking rules that bite

The gay calendar and where to book for it
West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval: tonight, 31 October 2026
Free, 6 pm to 11 pm on Santa Monica Blvd between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard, with stages and tens of thousands of people in costume. If you are reading this today, you will not find a WeHo room. Stay in Beverly Grove and walk up. The 2027 date has not been announced as of October 2026. Book WeHo for Halloween as early as summer.

Big Gay Cruise, 9–15 April 2027
Big Gay Cruise to Mexico sails from Los Angeles on Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas. It is a large LGBTQ group on a regular sailing, not a charter. Confirm the terminal with the operator. If you fly in the day before, the LAX Marriott or Courtyard LAX make sense for that night.
LA Black Pride, expected Memorial Day weekend 2027 (TBA)
The 2026 edition was on 27 June. The next edition is listed for late May 2027 (Memorial Day weekend), but exact dates are not confirmed. See LA Black Pride. The beach party has usually been held at Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades, far to the west. You need a car from any hotel in this guide.

WeHo Pride, 4–6 June 2027
Visit West Hollywood lists Pride weekend 2027 as 4–6 June, with the schedule still to be announced. The individual events are still marked TBA: the street fair, the arts festival and OUTLOUD at WeHo Pride in West Hollywood Park. In 2026 the city ran a Pride season from 22 May to 30 June around the main weekend. Book WeHo hotels by January or February. If those are full, Beverly Grove is 15–30 minutes' walk from the park and the boulevard.
LA Pride, mid-June 2027 (TBA)
LA Pride is run by Christopher Street West, which moved its parade back to Hollywood in 2022. The 2026 parade was on 14 June. The 2027 date had not been confirmed as of October 2026. Going by previous years it should be 12–13 June, so book rooms you can cancel. None of our listed hotels is within walking distance of the route. The Metro B Line stops at Hollywood/Highland and Hollywood/Vine, and Downtown hotels near Pershing Square or 7th St/Metro Center are on the same line with no change.

OutfestNEXT, late July 2027 (TBA)
The successor to Outfest ran 23–26 July 2026, centred on the Renberg Theatre at the LA LGBT Center's Village on McCadden Place in Hollywood. See OutfestNEXT; 2027 dates are not yet published. The LA Queer Film Festival is a different, smaller event and has no announced dates.
Getting back at 3 am
From LAX. Uber, Lyft and taxis have been picking up at the LAX-it lot by Terminal 1, reached by a free shuttle from the terminals. Building work at the airport keeps changing the arrangements, so follow the app and the signs. To West Hollywood, expect about US$45–80 by Uber or Lyft and 30–60 minutes, much longer at weekday rush hour. For Downtown, the FlyAway bus to Union Station costs about US$10 and is the cheapest reliable option. The LAX/Metro Transit Center connects to Metro rail, but reaching West Hollywood by train with bags is slow and takes several changes.
From the bars. WeHo has no Metro rail station. Uber and Lyft work everywhere in the city, and almost everyone uses them after closing. Prices surge at 2 am on Saturdays and at Pride and Halloween, when street closures push pickups onto side streets. Waymo's driverless cars cover much of central LA; check the app's map for your hotel and pickup point. Metro buses on Santa Monica Boulevard run late but not often, so check the night times in the Metro app rather than waiting at a stop. A standard Metro fare is about US$1.75 on a TAP card or phone. The B Line connects Hollywood, the Eastside (Vermont/Sunset, Vermont/Santa Monica), Downtown and North Hollywood. Last trains run around midnight, a little later at weekends (check the Metro app), so use it to get out, not to get home.
Walking. Safe at closing time:
Take a car for any route that crosses Skid Row downtown, Western Avenue, East Hollywood's stretch of Santa Monica Blvd, the climb from Santa Monica Blvd to Sunset, or a park.

Health, safety and the law
Clinic, PEP and PrEP. The Los Angeles LGBT Center at 1625 N Schrader Blvd in Hollywood is the main centre for HIV and sexual health services. Call ahead for current walk-in hours. PEP should start within 72 hours of exposure, and the sooner the better. In California, pharmacists can supply PEP and a starter course of PrEP without a prescription, so a large pharmacy in WeHo or Hollywood is a fallback at the weekend. Not every pharmacist does it, so phone first. If you have no US insurance, ask the price before you agree to anything.
App dates. The usual risks in LA are app dates that turn out to be robbery set-ups, and car break-ins. Meet first in a bar, share your location with a friend, do not give out your room number before you have met, and keep passports in the room safe. We found no verified 2025–2026 incident aimed at gay visitors in the areas above, but the same precautions apply. If you have a car, leave nothing visible in it, anywhere.
Drugs. Cannabis is legal for adults 21 and over if bought from licensed shops. You cannot use it in public, and in practice not in your hotel room either. Methamphetamine, GHB, cocaine and ketamine are illegal, and California tightened penalties for repeat drug offences in 2024. The bigger risk at parties is drugs contaminated with fentanyl. Naloxone (Narcan) is sold over the counter at pharmacies.
Parks and public sex. Griffith Park and Elysian Park have long cruising histories. But lewd conduct in public is a criminal offence, and both parks are patrolled. Do not hike either after dark.
Context. California law protects LGBTQ people in housing, employment and public places, including hotels, and same-sex couples will not be questioned at check-in. In June 2025 parts of Downtown were under a week-long overnight curfew during protests over immigration raids. If you are not a US citizen, carry your passport or a copy of it.
Three picks
Budget: PodShare Los Feliz. The only cheap bed in our listings with a gay bar under 11 minutes' walk, and Akbar and FLEX are within about 20 minutes. You give up privacy entirely, but for a solo trip built around the Eastside it makes sense.
Mid-range: Elan Hotel. About 20 minutes on foot to The Abbey corner. It is in the City of LA rather than WeHo, so the tax is slightly lower, and breakfast is included. Walk up for the evening and take a car home.
Splurge: Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The highest-rated large hotel in our listings within walking distance of the WeHo bars, 15–20 minutes up Robertson. Hotel Bel-Air is grander, but every night out from there starts with a car.

Frequently asked
Is there a gay or men-only hotel in Los Angeles?
Not in 2026. The Coral Sands Motel, the last well-known gay men's motel, is closed, and the San Vicente Inn stopped being gay years ago. Gay visitors use mainstream WeHo hotels or private rooms with gay hosts.

Which hotel is closest to the West Hollywood gay bars?
The Ramada Plaza West Hollywood, on Santa Monica Blvd itself between La Cienega and Robertson. Of the hotels in our listings, the Sofitel on Beverly Blvd is closest, about 15–20 minutes' walk to Robertson.
What is the hotel tax in Los Angeles?
14% in the City of LA, plus about 2% at hotels with 50 or more rooms. In West Hollywood it is 12.5% plus a 4% tourism assessment, so about 16.5%.

Can I bring a guest back to my hotel?
Yes, at ordinary hotels; there are no joiner fees or visitor registration in the US. Hostels and pod hotels are the exception.
When is WeHo Pride 2027?
4–6 June 2027, according to Visit West Hollywood, with the schedule still to be announced. LA Pride in Hollywood is usually the following weekend, but its 2027 date was not confirmed as of October 2026.

Is there a gay beach in Los Angeles?
Not a dedicated one. Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades has long been the beach most associated with gay men, and it hosts the LA Black Pride beach day. You need a car to get there from every hotel in this guide.
Should I stay in West Hollywood or Silver Lake?
West Hollywood if you want to walk between lots of bars. Silver Lake if you prefer leather bars, dives and the bathhouses. Silver Lake has almost no hotels, so plan on a private rental there.
