Waiting for Marsha
About the event
Waiting for Marsha is a contemporary theater performance by Raymi Sambo Maakt about activism, solidarity, and the ongoing struggle for queer rights. Inspired by the life and legacy of Marsha P. Johnson, one of the first African-American queer activists, the performance connects historical emancipation struggles with contemporary social developments.
New York, 1969. In a bar full of color, music, and freedom, drag queens and activists rebel during the Stonewall riots, a turning point in the international struggle for equal rights. More than fifty years later, hard-won freedoms seem to be under pressure again. In Waiting for Marsha, a group of queer activists led by Marvan wants to use World Pride 2026 to draw attention to increasing harassment and violence against the queer community. As pressure mounts, the question arises how far activism can go when fundamental freedoms are threatened.
The performance connects themes such as visibility, identity, resistance, and social change.
