Last verified: November 2026. Sacramento has no gay hotel, no men-only guesthouse and no clothing-optional resort. We could not find one in recent years either. Every bed in this guide is in a mainstream hotel, hostel or mansion inn that welcomes gay guests but is not aimed at them, so the real choice is location. The gay bars are in a tight cluster around 20th and K Streets in Midtown, an area locals call Lavender Heights. None of the hotels in our listings is inside that cluster, and the closest is a 15–20 minute walk away. This guide covers which downtown and Midtown stays you can walk back to from the bars and which need a car. It also covers the 12% city hotel tax and the two big gay weekends: June Pride on Capitol Mall and the Labor Day Rainbow Festival on K Street. Finally, it explains what changed in Lavender Heights after two assaults in late summer 2026.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to 20th & K (Lavender Heights) | Walk to Radclyffe's (13th & H, Mansion Flats) | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gay-owned or men-only | None in Sacramento as of November 2026 | n/a | n/a | Gay hosts on short-term rental sites are the nearest thing. Check the host, not the marketing. |
| Closest to the bars | The Sterling Hotel | 15–20 min | 1–2 min | Next door to the queer cocktail bar and a straight walk to K Street. It is a wedding venue first, so confirm the room and the check-in hours before you book. |
| Budget and hostel | HI Sacramento Hostel | 22–27 min | 8–10 min | Solo travellers and short stays. You can't bring anyone back to a dorm, so book a private room if that matters. |
| Downtown boutique | The Citizen Hotel, Kimpton Sawyer Hotel | 21–26 min (Citizen), 30–35 min (Sawyer) | 9–11 min (Citizen), 16–19 min (Sawyer) | Big-brand reliability and a short ride to Pride on Capitol Mall. Rates jump on arena nights. |
| Small mansion inns | Vizcaya, The Inn & Spa at Parkside | 20–22 min (Vizcaya), 36–41 min (Parkside) | 29–32 min (Vizcaya), 31–34 min (Parkside) | Couples who want quiet and character. Vizcaya fills with weddings at weekends. Parkside is a long walk or a short ride. |
| Novelty on the river | Delta King Hotel | 40–45 min | 26–29 min | A night on a 1927 paddlewheeler in Old Sacramento. Cabins are small, and you will need a ride home from the bars. |
| Car-dependent chains | Courtyard Sacramento Midtown, The Westin Sacramento Hotel & Marina, Fairfield Airport Natomas, The Villas at Arden Hills | Taxi (50 min or more on foot) | Taxi | Drivers, early flights, hospital visits, spa weekends. Budget for a rideshare every night out. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
Downtown and Midtown Sacramento are laid out on a flat grid. Numbered streets run north–south and lettered streets run east–west. A block plus its alley is roughly 120 metres, so walking times are easy to predict. The higher the street number, the further east you are, and the further down the alphabet, the further south. Lavender Heights is the few blocks around 20th and K. Faces Nightclub is at 2000 K. Across the street are The Depot (2001), Badlands (2003) and Roscoe's Bar & Burgers (2007). The Mercantile Saloon is a block south at 1928 L, and Teneral Cellars pours wine at 1050 20th. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is on the same block at 2031 K.
Three venues sit outside that cluster, and they affect where you sleep. Radclyffe's, the queer restaurant and cocktail bar, is at 1330 H Street in Mansion Flats, about 15 minutes north-west of K Street. The Bolt, the leather and bear bar, is out in North Sacramento. Sac Buddies, the men's bathhouse, is in South Sacramento. Nobody walks to those last two, so don't pick a hotel for them.
In practice the walkable zone is the rectangle from 10th to 21st Street and from H to P Street. After midnight, J and L Streets are the better-lit routes, with Midtown restaurants and bars between 16th and 21st. West of 13th, K Street and the plaza around City Hall go quiet late at night, and sometimes feel edgy. Capitol Park is dark after hours, so walk around it, not through it. Heat matters too. From June to September afternoons often go well past 35°C, which makes a 25-minute walk a sweaty one and a pool worth paying for.

Mansion Flats: the Sterling and the hostel
Mansion Flats is the grid of Victorian houses north of the Capitol around H Street. The Sterling Hotel at 1300 H Street is the closest stay in our listings to a gay venue. It is 74 metres from Radclyffe's (1–2 min) and 15–20 minutes from 20th and K via J Street. The building is a converted Victorian mansion with 16 or 17 rooms (sources differ), and at weekends it is mostly a wedding venue. In 2026 it trades as Sterling Hotel by Wedgewood Weddings. The opening hours Yelp lists look like an events office, not a 24-hour front desk. Before you rely on it, confirm your dates are open to overnight guests and ask how late check-in runs.
HI Sacramento Hostel at 925 H Street is another restored mansion, three blocks further west. It is open in 2026 and its front desk is staffed around the clock. Radclyffe's is 8–10 minutes away and K Street 22–27 minutes. Late at night the walk back from K Street crosses downtown, the quiet part, so a rideshare is the sensible way home after 1 am. The trip is under 2 km. Online listings show beds from about US$38, but treat that as the lowest you might pay, not a promise.
Downtown and the Capitol: Citizen and Sawyer
The Citizen Hotel (926 J Street, Marriott's Autograph Collection) is in a 1920s office tower facing Cesar Chavez Plaza. It is downtown, not Midtown, whatever some listings say. Radclyffe's is 9–11 minutes away, and 20th and K is 21–26 minutes straight up J Street. Prices are upper mid-range. It is the most grown-up base for a weekend that mixes the Capitol, dinner and a few hours on K Street.
Kimpton Sawyer Hotel (500 J Street) is on Downtown Commons beside the Golden 1 Center arena. It is the furthest downtown hotel from the bars, 30–35 minutes on foot, so plan to ride. In return it is 8–9 minutes from the Pride festival on Capitol Mall, and it has a rooftop pool, which is the reason to pay for it in July. Kings home games (the NBA season runs from late October to April) and big concerts push rates up sharply. Check the arena calendar before you choose dates.

South Midtown and Southside Park: the mansion inns
Vizcaya at 2019 21st Street is the second-closest stay in our listings to the K Street bars. Walk north up 21st for 20–22 minutes and you reach the Community Center, and the Merc is 17–20 minutes. It is a wedding mansion with eight guest rooms. Online listings in 2026 show midweek rates from about US$115–125, which is good value for the location. The street is residential and quiet. The catch is weekend events, so ask whether there is a wedding on your night and how late it runs.
The Inn & Spa at Parkside (2116 6th Street) is spread over two buildings by Southside Park, the historic Fong mansion and the Parkside Villa. Breakfast for two is included, and it scores 4.6 on Tripadvisor from about 400 reviews. Rates in the listings we checked started at about US$185–210 a night. It is 36–41 minutes from 20th and K, so take a ride at night. At Pride it is a few minutes from Southside Park, where the march gathers.
Old Sacramento and the river
Delta King Hotel is a 1927 paddlewheel riverboat moored at 1000 Front Street. It has 44 staterooms, the Pilothouse restaurant and a theatre. Old Sacramento is a tourist strip with wooden boardwalks, and it empties after dinner. K Street is 40–45 minutes away on foot, under the I-5 freeway and across downtown, so ride both ways. Book it for a night of novelty, not for a weekend in the bars.

Out of the centre
Despite the name, Courtyard by Marriott Sacramento Midtown is at 4422 Y Street beside UC Davis Medical Center. That is about 3.4 km from 20th and K, more than 50 minutes on foot. The nearest queer address is the gift shop Strapping on Broadway (20–23 min). The Westin Sacramento Hotel & Marina is on Riverside Boulevard, about 5.5 km south. Fairfield Airport Natomas makes sense for a 6 am flight and not much else. The Villas at Arden Hills is a resort-style club and spa in Arden-Arcade, about 11 km from the bars. You need a car at all four. If you have one and care about The Bolt or Sac Buddies as much as K Street, that is a fair trade.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
There are none. We found no gay-owned hotel, men-only guesthouse or clothing-optional property operating in Sacramento in 2026, and no hotel in our listings claims to be one. Some older directories listed the Delta King as gay. It is a mainstream riverboat hotel that welcomes gay guests, nothing more.
The gay-run businesses here are bars, not hotels. Roscoe's is queer-owned and took over the old Sidetrax space. Faces (opened in 1985) and the Badlands/Depot pair are the long-running anchors of the strip, and Teneral Cellars is owned by a married lesbian couple. The only men-only space is Sac Buddies at 4909 Franklin Boulevard. It is members-only for men 18 and over, checks photo ID at the door and stays open late on Fridays and Saturdays. It has no rooms to rent.
If you want a gay host, misterb&b and similar platforms list gay-hosted rooms and apartments in Sacramento, and one in Midtown can put you inside the walkable zone. We haven't checked any of them and quality varies, so read recent reviews and confirm the address before you pay. Outside the city, Purple Roofs has listed Ponderosa Ridge as a gay-friendly B&B in Placerville, about an hour east in the Sierra foothills. That listing is from 2022 and we could not confirm it for 2026.

Booking rules that bite
- Hotel tax. The City of Sacramento charges a 12% transient occupancy tax on hotel stays of 30 days or less inside city limits. Two tourism-district assessments are added on top. The Sacramento Tourism Infrastructure District takes 1%, and the Sacramento Tourism Marketing District takes between 1.33% and 4% depending on the property. Expect roughly 14–17% in total on the room rate. Hotels outside city limits (much of Arden-Arcade, for example) charge county rates instead, so check your bill.
- Guests and visitors. American hotels don't charge joiner fees, and no Sacramento chain will ask who your guest is. The front desk does register whoever checks in, with photo ID and a card for the deposit hold. Our standard tip still applies: book for two guests from the start. That keeps the rate correct and gets you two keys. At the Inn & Spa at Parkside it also covers the breakfast for two included in the rate. Hostel dorms are the exception, so assume no visitors there.
- Deposits and fees. Expect a card hold at check-in, and a larger one if you pay by debit card. Some downtown hotels add an amenity or "destination" fee. Downtown parking is charged separately, by the night. Read the final booking screen, not the headline rate, and confirm the parking cost with the hotel.
- Event pricing. Rates around the Golden 1 Center rise on Kings and concert nights. Pride weekend and Labor Day weekend push up prices across downtown. When the Legislature is sitting (roughly January to early September), hotels near the Capitol fill from Monday to Thursday.
- Mansion inns. The Sterling and Vizcaya run on wedding calendars. Weekend rooms are hard to get and the noise can last into the evening. Read the cancellation terms, because small inns are often stricter than chains.
- For the festival: the Kimpton Sawyer (8–9 min to Capitol Mall), the Delta King or the Citizen.
- For the start of the march: the Inn & Spa at Parkside.
- For the after-parties on K Street: the Sterling or Vizcaya.
The gay calendar and where to book for it

Sacramento Pride
The 2026 edition ran on 13–14 June. As of November 2026 the Sacramento LGBT Community Center has not announced dates for 2027. The expected weekend is 12–13 June 2027, and a race-listing site already shows the Pride 5K on Saturday 12 June 2027, but wait for the organiser to confirm. The march leaves Southside Park, where the first Sacramento Pride march gathered in 1979, and heads to the State Capitol. The festival takes over Capitol Mall between 3rd and 7th Streets.
Book as soon as dates are confirmed, and by March at the latest. We could not verify any official partner hotels.
Sacramento Rainbow Festival
This is the one big street party held in Lavender Heights itself. The 38th edition took over 20th and K on Sunday 6 September 2026 from 11 am to 10 pm, with live music, vendors and food trucks. The 2027 edition is pencilled in for Sunday 5 September 2027 (Labor Day weekend), but as of November 2026 the date is TBA. In 2026 the city listed it as one of several Central City events that weekend, alongside the Chalk It Up art festival in Fremont Park, so Midtown fills up. Book Vizcaya or the Sterling if you want to walk there. From anywhere downtown it is a short ride. Don't try to park near 20th and K that day.

Through the year
Outside those two weekends, the bars set the calendar: drag brunches at Roscoe's, theme nights at Faces, and leather and bear nights at The Bolt. None of these move hotel prices. Kings home games from late October to April have a much bigger effect on downtown rates.
Getting back at 3 am
From the airport. Sacramento International (SMF) is about 17 km north-west of the centre, roughly 20–35 minutes by car depending on traffic. SacRT's Route 142 is a zero-emission express bus between Terminals A and B and downtown. Together with Yolobus routes 42A and 42B, it gives you a bus every 20–30 minutes, seven days a week. It makes several stops downtown. From there the Citizen and the hostel are a short walk, and Midtown is a rideshare or a 20-minute walk. Check the SacRT timetable for the last bus if you land late. Uber and Lyft both pick up at the terminals. We don't quote a fare because surge pricing varies so much.
From the bars. California bars stop serving at 2 am, and K Street empties within half an hour. Light rail and buses are no use at 3 am, so plan on Uber or Lyft. Both work reliably in Sacramento, and the ride from Midtown to downtown is short. Street cabs are rare, so don't count on hailing one. If you walk, take J Street west, the busier and better-lit route, and walk in pairs. Don't cut through Capitol Park or hang around Cesar Chavez Plaza late.
Lavender Heights after the 2026 assaults. Two assaults happened on the 2000 block in late August and early September 2026 (details below). Since then the city has hired a private security firm to cover Lavender Heights around the clock, and volunteers patrol at closing time to walk people home. If you feel uneasy walking even a few blocks, ask them to walk you.

Health, safety and the law
Clinics. One Community Health is at 1500 21st Street, 8–10 minutes south of the K Street bars. It opened in 1989 as CARES, an HIV clinic, and is now a federally qualified health centre offering HIV testing and treatment. Call ahead to ask about same-day appointments for PEP and PrEP. In California, pharmacists can also give you PEP, and a starter supply of PrEP, without a prescription. Not every pharmacy does this, so phone first. PEP has to start within 72 hours, and any emergency department will provide it when clinics are closed. The Gender Health Center at 3823 V Street serves trans and nonbinary visitors.
Recent incidents. Around the end of August 2026, someone was assaulted near 20th and L Streets at about 1 am. The attacker used racist and anti-LGBTQ slurs, and Sacramento police recorded it as a felony assault with a bias report. Then, just before 2:45 am on Monday 7 September 2026, two women were assaulted outside Badlands on the 2000 block of K Street and suffered minor injuries. Police had not confirmed a bias motive. The city's response is described above. Most nights are calm, and the risky time is closing time. Leave with friends and wait inside until your ride arrives. You can report anything to the police bias and hate crime hotline on 916-808-2427.
App dates. Meet the first time in a bar on K Street, not at your hotel. Tell a friend the profile name and your room number. Don't hand over your phone unlocked. If a date wants to change the meeting place or bring a friend, treat it as a warning sign.
Drugs. Meth, GHB, cocaine and MDMA are all illegal in California. Proposition 36 (2024) toughened penalties for repeat possession and for fentanyl. Fake pills containing fentanyl are a real risk. Naloxone (Narcan) is sold over the counter in pharmacies and is worth carrying. Hotels will throw you out and charge for damage if they find drugs in your room.
Cannabis and smoking. Adults 21 and over can buy cannabis legally from licensed dispensaries and carry up to 28.5 g. Smoking or vaping it in public or in a car is illegal, and almost every hotel bans it in rooms. Cleaning fees for smoking in a room run to hundreds of dollars. Edibles are the discreet option.
Public sex. Cruising directories still list the American River Parkway near Discovery Park and William Land Park. Both are family parks patrolled by rangers and police, and lewd conduct in public is a misdemeanour in California. Sac Buddies exists for a reason.
Three picks
Budget: HI Sacramento Hostel. A restored mansion with a 24-hour desk, 8–10 minutes from Radclyffe's and a short ride from K Street. It is the cheapest safe bed in the walkable zone, as long as you don't plan to bring anyone back.
Mid-range: Vizcaya. At about US$115–125 midweek, it is the cheapest room in our listings you can walk back to from 20th and K. The walk is 20–22 minutes up 21st Street, mostly through residential blocks. Avoid wedding weekends. If you would rather have a full-service chain, pick The Citizen on J Street.
Splurge: Kimpton Sawyer Hotel. Sacramento summers regularly pass 38°C, so a rooftop pool is a real amenity here. It is also 8–9 minutes from the Pride festival on Capitol Mall, and Kimpton has a long record of LGBTQ-inclusive policies. Take a ride to K Street at night.

Frequently asked
Are there any gay hotels in Sacramento?
No. As of November 2026 Sacramento has no gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional hotel. Gay travellers stay in mainstream hotels downtown and in Midtown, picked for the walk to 20th and K.

Which hotel is closest to the Lavender Heights gay bars?
In our listings, The Sterling Hotel is closest: 15–20 minutes to 20th and K and 1–2 minutes to Radclyffe's. Next is Vizcaya, 20–22 minutes north up 21st Street. Everything downtown is 20 minutes or more.
Is there a gay sauna in Sacramento?
Yes. Sac Buddies, at 4909 Franklin Boulevard in South Sacramento, is a members-only bathhouse for men 18 and over, with photo ID checked at the door. It is several kilometres from downtown, so take a car or rideshare.

What is the hotel tax in Sacramento?
The city charges a 12% transient occupancy tax, plus two tourism-district assessments of 1% and 1.33–4%. Budget for 14–17% on top of the room rate.
Can I bring a guest back to my hotel?
Yes. US hotels don't charge visitor or joiner fees, and the Sacramento hotels in this guide are gay-friendly. Book for two guests anyway so keys and breakfast are covered. Hostel dorms are the exception.

When is Sacramento Pride 2027?
Not announced as of November 2026. The expected weekend is 12–13 June 2027, with the festival on Capitol Mall between 3rd and 7th Streets. The 2026 edition was 13–14 June.
Is Lavender Heights safe at night?
Mostly. There were two assaults there in late August and early September 2026, one near 20th and L and one on the 2000 block of K Street. The city has since added 24-hour private security and volunteer walk-home patrols. Leave at closing time in a group, or wait inside until your rideshare arrives.
