Last verified: October 2026. Montreal has one of the largest gay villages in North America but very few gay hotels left. The only place still sold as men-only is L'escogriffe, a small B&B on Rue Wolfe. We could confirm it only through booking-site listings, not through anything the owners have said in 2026. The hotel in the old Complexe Bourbon on Sainte-Catherine Est has closed. Alexandre Logan, once the smart B&B of the Village, is reported permanently closed. That leaves a handful of small B&Bs that welcome gay men but don't restrict their guests, one solid mid-size hotel at the Papineau end of the strip, and a row of budget hotels and a large hostel around Berri-UQAM. Everything else is downtown, in Old Montreal or on the Plateau, which means a 20 to 45 minute walk or a taxi. This guide gives walking times to the bars on Sainte-Catherine Est and says which blocks are loud or rough at 3 am. It also covers the 3.5% lodging tax, guest and ID rules, night transport, and what changed for Pride in 2026, when the festival's main site moved east to the Olympic Park.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

The gay Village is one street, Sainte-Catherine Est. It runs about 1 km from Place Émilie-Gamelin at Berri-UQAM metro to Avenue Papineau, with Beaudry metro in the middle and Papineau metro at the east end. The bars are close together. The drag cabaret Chez Mado and the strip club Campus are at 1111–1115. Unity and Stock share 1171. Bar Renard is at 1272. Aigle Noir is at 1315, Sauna Oasis at 1390, Sauna Centre-Ville at 1465 and Sky at 1478. Le Cocktail and Rocky face each other at 1669–1673. Le Stud (1812) and Cabaret Berlin (1982) are past Papineau. The after-hours clubs Circus (917) and Stereo (858) are at the western end near Berri.

The side streets that cross the strip are Rue Atateken (called Rue Amherst until 2019, and older listings still use that name), Wolfe, Montcalm, Beaudry, Panet, Plessis and Alexandre-DeSève. Sleep on one of these, within a block of Sainte-Catherine, and you can walk everywhere. Boulevard René-Lévesque is the southern edge. It's wide, windy and empty at night, so treat it as a road to cross rather than one to walk along. Rue Ontario Est is the northern edge, with cafés and quieter brick terraces.

In summer the strip is pedestrianised. In 2026 the car-free stretch ran from Place Émilie-Gamelin to Papineau and stayed closed to traffic until 12 October. Terraces in the zone close at 11 pm Sunday to Wednesday and at 3 am Thursday to Saturday. The busiest corner is Place du Village, at Sainte-Catherine and Wolfe.

The core: Atateken to Beaudry

Book here if you want to walk home in two minutes. Aubergell is at 1643 Rue Atateken. It's 2–3 minutes from the centre of the scene, and you'll hear the crowd from the hallway on a July Saturday, so ask for a room at the back. Auberge Cosy is at 1274 Sainte-Catherine Est, next to Motel Motel and opposite Renard. It's on the strip itself, 4–5 minutes from the middle of things, and quiet sleep is unlikely on a summer weekend. L'escogriffe is at 1264 Rue Wolfe, south of Sainte-Catherine. Allow 6–7 minutes to the centre and 5–6 to the saunas. Beaudry metro is about 300 m away. Bed and Breakfast du Village is at 1279 Rue Montcalm, also south of the strip and about 1 minute from Le Date's karaoke. It's 5–6 minutes from the centre and 4–5 from the saunas. Its 5.0 Google score from about 160 reviews is the best in the Village. Maison Des Jardins is on Rue Logan, a residential street north of the strip. It's 3–4 minutes from the bars, 5–6 from the saunas, and the quietest of the group.

At 3 am the core is busy and well lit from Atateken to Papineau. The south-side streets running down to René-Lévesque (Wolfe, Montcalm) are dark but short. You'll pass drunk people, and sometimes someone who's struggling. Robbery of visitors here is not a known pattern.

The Papineau end

Hotel Ste-Catherine, at 1676 Sainte-Catherine Est, is the only hotel of any size actually on the strip. It's 9–10 minutes from the Atateken–Wolfe centre but 4–5 minutes from Sauna Oasis and Sauna Centre-Ville. Rocky and Le Cocktail are across the road, and Le Stud is 4–5 minutes further east. Its 4.5 Google score from about 1,600 reviews is the most reliable hotel rating in the Village. Papineau metro is close by. East of Papineau the strip gets thinner and more local. Cabaret Berlin is the reason to walk that far.

Hotel Dorion is on Rue Dorion, north of the strip and 11–12 minutes from the centre. It has a 2.7 Google score, and we could not find a working phone number or website. Don't book it without a direct confirmation that it's operating.

The western edge: Berri-UQAM and the Quartier Latin

This is the cheap end, and it's well connected. The 747 airport bus and three metro lines meet at Berri-UQAM. M Montréal (1245 Rue Saint-André) and Hôtel Le Saint-André (1285 Rue Saint-André) are 7–8 minutes from the scene centre. Hôtel Bon Accueil and Empire Suites face each other on Rue Saint-Hubert at 1601 and 1606, 6–8 minutes from the centre and 2–3 from Circus. Expect 11–13 minutes to the saunas from those two. Hôtel St-Denis, at 1254 Rue Saint-Denis, is 12–13 minutes away. Its rooms are a step up.

The watch-out is the area around Place Émilie-Gamelin, the bus station and the lower part of Saint-Hubert. In 2023, Village bar and restaurant owners closed terraces early over assaults, theft and harassment. The city brought in an intervention plan that summer. By late 2023 locals reported improvement, but homelessness and street drug dealing remained. We found no verified 2025–2026 reports of attacks aimed at gay visitors. At 3 am, walk along Sainte-Catherine itself rather than cutting across the square. The ratings matter here too: 2.7 for Empire Suites from over 900 reviews and 3.4 for Bon Accueil. You'd be paying for location, not the room.

The Main, downtown and Old Montreal

Hotel 10, at Sherbrooke and Saint-Laurent, is 19–21 minutes from the Village. The walk is flat, down Saint-Laurent and east along Sainte-Catherine. It's 8–9 minutes from Café Cleopatra's upstairs cabaret. Downtown chains are 37–44 minutes on foot: the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, the Marriott Château Champlain, the Residence Inn, the Omni Mont-Royal and Le Crystal. From those, the green line from Peel or McGill to Beaudry is the better option. In Old Montreal, William Gray is 23–25 minutes away and W Montreal 32–34. Hôtel Alt, in the Griffintown area, is nearer 50. None of these are bad choices. Just budget for taxis, and remember that from December to March a 25-minute walk on icy pavement at 3 am is miserable.

The Plateau and the east

Casa Bianca, on Avenue de l'Esplanade facing Jeanne-Mance Park, suits the queer crowd who drink on the Plateau rather than in the Village. Bar Champs is about a minute away and Bain Colonial is in the same neighbourhood. The Village is 34–36 minutes away, so take a taxi. Hotel Universel, at 5000 Sherbrooke Est, was irrelevant to gay travellers until 2026. That year Fierté Montréal moved its main site to the Olympic Park Esplanade, about a 15-minute walk from the hotel. See the calendar below.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Men-only. L'escogriffe B&B, 1264 Rue Wolfe, is the only Village guesthouse that still trades as men-only. Its name on Kayak, Momondo, Trip.com and Wego still includes "Men Only", and guest scores there are around 9.3–9.4. We could not find a 2026 statement from the owners, and some listings look stale. Message or phone them and get a written reply before you pay a deposit.

Was men-only, now unclear. Older listings describe Auberge Cosy as a guesthouse for gay men. Its current listings make no such claim. Treat it as a gay-friendly B&B on the strip unless the owners tell you otherwise.

Gay-run houses we can't link. La Loggia Art B&B, at 1637 Rue Atateken, is listed by GayCities as gay-owned and operated. Gîte Le St-Christophe, at 1597 Rue Saint-Christophe near Berri-UQAM, still appears on gay travel sites with its rooftop deck and hot tub. Le Houseboy B&B, at 1656 Sainte-Catherine Est, has a Tripadvisor page. We could not confirm any of the three as operating in 2026, so confirm before booking.

Closed. Hotel Bourbon, part of the old Complexe Bourbon at 1574 Sainte-Catherine Est, has closed. Some older guides still recommend it. Alexandre Logan (1870), the restored B&B on Rue Alexandre-DeSève, is marked permanently closed by GayCities, although some booking sites still carry it.

Clothing-optional. We could not verify any clothing-optional guesthouse in Montreal. The men-only spaces are the bathhouses: Sauna Oasis (listed as open 24 hours), Sauna Centre-Ville and Sauna G.I. Joe on the strip, and Bain Colonial on the Plateau. Most gay visitors stay in ordinary hotels, which in Montreal is not a compromise.

About ownership: the small Village B&Bs listed here are gay-friendly and full of gay guests. We have not verified who owns them, and none restricts guests by gender.

Booking rules that bite

    • Taxes. Quebec charges a 3.5% lodging tax per night, and Montreal adds no separate city tax. On top of that come 5% GST and 9.975% QST. Together they add roughly 19% to a quoted room rate. US-style booking sites often show the price before tax, so check the final screen.
    • Bringing someone back. Canadian hotels don't register guests with the police, and visitor fees are rare in mainstream hotels. Two places do bite. In hostel dorms, non-guests are not allowed upstairs. Small B&Bs have shared hallways and owners who notice. The fix is simple: book for 2 guests from the start, and ask the B&B about its visitor policy before you arrive. At check-in, the person who booked shows photo ID and a credit card.
    • Deposits and cards. Expect a card hold at check-in. Small B&Bs may take a deposit when you book and have stricter cancellation terms than chain hotels. Read them closely for Pride week.
    • Minimum stays. B&Bs in the Village commonly set minimum stays over Pride and long weekends. Confirm the rule with the property. Booking-site calendars aren't always right.
    • Short-term rentals. Montreal restricts short-term apartment rentals tightly. Legitimate listings show a Quebec registration number (CITQ). Listings without one can be cancelled on you, so avoid them, especially for Pride.
    • Smoking. Hotel rooms are non-smoking, and that includes cannabis. Expect a cleaning charge if you smoke anyway. The amount varies by property.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

    Image+Nation: 19–29 November 2026

Montreal's LGBTQ+ film festival has run since 1987. Screenings are spread across the Monument-National on Saint-Laurent, Concordia's Sir George Williams Auditorium, Cinéma J.A. de Sève and the Phi Centre. For this one, stay at Hotel 10 or Hôtel St-Denis, between the cinemas and the bars. It's low season, and rooms are not a problem.

Sugar Bear Festival: listed for 7–11 April 2027

This is Bear-It's spring bear weekend, held in the Village bars during sugar-shack season. The 2026 edition ran from 8 to 12 April. The 2027 dates are listed, but Bear-It had not published them on its own channels as of October 2026, so confirm with them before booking flights you can't change. Book the core (Atateken to Beaudry) or Hotel Ste-Catherine, near Aigle Noir and Le Stud. The Village B&Bs are the first to fill.

    Fierté Montréal: 2027 dates TBA

The 2026 edition, the 20th, ran from 31 July to 9 August. The parade was on 9 August at 1 pm. What changed is the geography. The main site moved to the Olympic Park Esplanade (Pie-IX metro, green line), which hosted the big free drag night and the Sunday Mega T-Dance. The Village kept a stage and the pedestrian street. The organisers put the two sites about a ten-minute metro ride apart. The 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026, and early August is the usual slot. Book the Village if you care about the bars at night. Look at Hotel Universel only if you plan to spend your days at the Olympic Park stages. Book Village rooms in winter or early spring, as soon as dates appear. The good B&Bs go first.

    Love Festival: 2027 TBA

Love Festival is the commercial circuit-party series that runs during Pride. In 2026 it ran from 6 to 9 August, with the Saturday headline party at MTelus on Sainte-Catherine Est near Saint-Laurent. The 2027 dates are TBA but it is expected over Fierté weekend. MTelus is about 15 minutes' walk from the Village core, or a short ride from Hotel 10.

    IGLA+ Championships: 30 July–5 August 2027

IGLA+ has published 30 July to 5 August 2027 for its LGBTQ+ aquatics championships in Montreal. The championship website was still marked "coming soon". If Fierté keeps its usual early-August slot, the two will overlap. Hundreds of swimmers and their supporters, plus Pride visitors, makes this the tightest week for Village rooms in years. Book refundable rooms early and confirm the venue before choosing a district.

    Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. The 747 bus runs 24 hours from Montréal-Trudeau to downtown and ends at Berri-UQAM, at the western edge of the Village. The fare is CA$11.25 (about US$8), and the ticket also works as a 24-hour pass on all STM buses and the metro. Allow 45–60 minutes, more at rush hour. Taxis charge a flat fare from the airport to downtown. Confirm the current amount at the rank, as it changes. Uber also operates at the airport.

From the bars. Bars stop serving at 3 am. Stereo opens at 2 am for after-hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and Circus runs late too. The metro stops around 12:30 to 1:30 am, depending on the night and the line, so check the STM timetable for your date. After that, the STM runs a network of night buses, and the 747 keeps going all night. Uber works well in Montreal, and taxis can be hailed on Sainte-Catherine and René-Lévesque. Expect a short wait at 3:05 on a summer Saturday.

Walking. Sainte-Catherine between Atateken and Papineau is fine at 3 am because it's still busy. After 1 am, avoid cutting through Place Émilie-Gamelin. René-Lévesque is safe enough but empty. To Old Montreal, take Rue Saint-Denis or Berri downhill. Don't wander the dark streets around the Jacques-Cartier bridge approach. In winter, ice is a bigger risk than people.

    Health, safety and the law

    • Sexual health. RÉZO, at 2075 Rue Plessis in the Village, works on the health of gay, bi and trans men. It runs HIV and STI testing and prevention programmes. Clinique médicale l'Actuel, on Boulevard de Maisonneuve Est near Berri-UQAM, is the city's best-known PrEP and sexual-health clinic. Confirm the address and walk-in rules before you go, as visitors without Quebec health cards pay. For PEP after a weekend exposure, go to an emergency department. The CHUM, at Saint-Denis and René-Lévesque, is the nearest large hospital to the Village. Bring your passport and travel-insurance details, because the drugs and the visit are billed to non-residents.
    • App dates. Meet in the bar first and leave valuables in the room safe. If you bring someone back to a B&B, tell the host in advance where the rules require it. We found no verified 2025–2026 reports of organised dating-app robberies in Montreal, but the usual rules still apply.
    • Drugs. GHB, crystal meth, cocaine and ketamine are illegal under Canadian federal law. British Columbia's decriminalisation experiment never applied in Quebec. If staff find drugs or drug use in a room, expect damage charges and possibly the police.
    • Cannabis. In Quebec you must be 21 to buy cannabis, and it is sold only through the government's SQDC shops. Smoking it in public places is prohibited, and so is smoking it in hotel rooms.
    • Tobacco. Quebec bans smoking on bar and restaurant terraces and near building entrances, and fines are enforced.
    • The law and the street. Same-sex relationships and marriage are legal in Canada, and public affection in the Village draws no attention. Cruising in parks is a grey area. Public sex is an offence, and Parc La Fontaine and Mont-Royal are patrolled.

Three picks

Budget: M Montréal. It's a big hostel with private rooms as well as dorms. It's 7–8 minutes from the bars and a block from the 747's last stop, and it scores 4.6 on Google from more than 3,300 reviews. It's better value than the 2.7-rated budget hotels on Saint-Hubert.

Mid-range: Bed and Breakfast du Village. At 1279 Rue Montcalm, it's on a side street just off the busiest part of the strip. The saunas are 4–5 minutes away, Beaudry metro is close, and it has a 5.0 rating. If you want a front desk instead, Hotel Ste-Catherine is the alternative.

Splurge: William Gray. It's a set of restored stone houses with a rooftop terrace in Old Montreal, 23–25 minutes' walk from the Village. That's close enough to walk in for drinks, and far enough to sleep. Take a taxi home after 1 am.

Frequently asked

Is L'escogriffe still men-only?
