The honest summary: Philadelphia has one of the oldest and most walkable gay districts in the US. The Gayborhood, centred on 13th and Locust, packs about a dozen gay bars, the city's only gay bathhouse, the oldest LGBTQ+ bookstore in the country and a new LGBTQ+ visitor centre into a few blocks of Center City. The history is real (gay-rights pickets at Independence Hall four years before Stonewall), the bars are mostly unpretentious, and the queer women's scene has a home again on South Street. It's smaller and cheaper than New York and quieter than Washington, and you don't need a car.

Where the scene is

The Gayborhood sits inside Washington Square West, roughly between 11th and Broad Streets and Chestnut and Pine, with its centre at 13th and Locust. About 70 street signs carry rainbow stripes, and the 13th and Locust crossing has rainbow crosswalks. The block of Locust between 12th and 13th is officially Barbara Gittings Way, after the activist. The northern end, around 13th and Sansom, is often called Midtown Village; it's the same strip, with more restaurants.

    • 13th Street, Camac Street and Chancellor Street hold most of the bars, all within five minutes of each other.
    • South Street and Queen Village, a 15-minute walk south-east, have Val's lesbian bar, Bob & Barbara's drag night and Passional. Philly Mag started calling the area the "Lezborhood" in 2026.
    • Fishtown and Kensington, north-east along the El, are where the DIY queer parties and smaller promoter nights happen, often in warehouses and bars that aren't gay venues the rest of the week.

Older guides sometimes call Rittenhouse Square the gay hub. It isn't: it's a smart neighbourhood west of Broad with one LGBTQ+ bar, Stir.

    Bars and clubs

    • Woody's (202 S 13th St) has been at 13th and Walnut since 1980 and is the biggest gay bar in the city: two floors, several DJ rooms, the Glöbar dance lounge and the Rosewood cocktail lounge next door at 1300-02 Walnut. Busy and young at weekends; reviews grumble about the door.
    • Tavern on Camac (243 S Camac St) has been a gay space since 1925, the oldest in the city. It reopened in July 2025 after a year's renovation: restaurant and sing-along piano bar downstairs, the Ascend club upstairs, no cover.
    • The Little Gay Pub (102 S 13th St) opened in May 2025, a branch of the DC bar of the same name, with a roof deck and a pub feel.
    • U Bar (1220 Locust St) is the former Uncles, a small, chatty neighbourhood bar open from 11:00 every day.
    • The Bike Stop (206 S Quince St) has been the leather bar since 1982: a street-level bar and a basement for gear and fetish nights.
    • Bar X (255 S Camac St), on the old Venture Inn site, draws a mostly Black crowd with drag karaoke and a weekend basement dance floor. A neighbourhood nonprofit sued in August 2026 to shut it as a nuisance; it was open at the time of writing.
    • Franky Bradley's (1320 Chancellor St), in the space that was the lesbian club Sisters until 2013, is a bar and kitchen, with burlesque and drag in the B.West room.
    • 254 (254 S 12th St), formerly iCandy and Tabu, has three floors: sports bar, drag and dance floor, roof deck.
    • Knock (225 S 12th St) is a restaurant and bar owned by Bill Wood, the original "Woody", with piano nights and Wednesday drag karaoke.
    • Voyeur (1221 St James St) is the after-hours club, Thursday to Sunday, until about 4am at weekends. It's run as a private club, so visitors pay a guest fee.
    • Stir Lounge (1705 Chancellor St, near Rittenhouse) is lesbian-owned and has been running for about 20 years: cocktails, DJs, WNBA watch parties.
    • Val's (605 S 3rd St, Queen Village) opened on 18 March 2026, the city's first dedicated lesbian bar since Toasted Walnut closed in 2021.
    • Dolphin Tavern (1539 S Broad St) is a former go-go bar that now hosts queer and mixed dance parties.

Gay-friendly rather than gay: Bob & Barbara's (1509 South St) has one of the city's longest-running drag shows every Thursday, and Dirty Franks at 13th and Pine is the classic dive on the edge of the Gayborhood. Pennsylvania bars close at 2am, so the night moves to Voyeur or Club Philly after that.

    Sauna

Club Philly (1220 Chancellor St) is the only gay bathhouse in Philadelphia, open 24 hours with a steam room, small gym, lockers and private rooms. The Sansom Street Gym closed years ago, so ignore old listings for it. Bring ID.

    Cruising

Older guides name city parks, especially FDR Park in South Philadelphia, but we found no current press or community source confirming activity there, and FDR Park is in the middle of a long renovation. Open lewdness and indecent exposure are criminal offences in Pennsylvania. The legal options are Club Philly, the Bike Stop's event nights and the apps.

    Shops and books

Giovanni's Room (345 S 12th St) opened in 1973 and is usually called the oldest LGBTQ+ bookstore in the US. Philly AIDS Thrift has run it since 2014, so new queer titles share the shelves with donated second-hand books. Passional Boutique (317 South St) sells fetish wear, corsets and toys and has a long kink and LGBTQ+ customer base.

    History you can visit

    • The Gay Pioneers marker at 6th and Chestnut marks the Annual Reminders: every 4 July from 1965 to 1969, activists led by Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings picketed Independence Hall in jackets and dresses.
    • The Dewey's sit-in marker near 17th Street marks the April 1965 sit-ins against a restaurant that refused to serve gay and gender-nonconforming customers, one of the earliest LGBTQ+ sit-ins in the country.
    • Barbara Gittings Way is the Locust Street block named for her in 2012.

    Community, health and visitor help

    • The Philly Pride Visitor Center (1139 Locust St) opened on 25 February 2026, run by Visit Philly for LGBTQ+ travellers: maps, listings and advice. A good first stop.
    • The William Way LGBT Community Center is the community centre. Its building at 1315 Spruce St closed in December 2025 and will be replaced; programmes now run from St. Luke and the Epiphany, 330 S 13th St. The John J. Wilcox Jr. Archives are closed for now.
    • Mazzoni Center (1348 Bainbridge St) is the LGBTQ+ health centre for testing, PrEP and gender-affirming care.
    • The Attic Youth Center (255 S 16th St, moving to 1206 Chestnut St) works with LGBTQ+ young people aged 14 to 23.

    Pride and events

    • Philly Pride is held on the first Sunday in June and run by Philly Pride 365. On 7 June 2026 the march left 13th and Locust at 11am for the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where the festival ran until 7pm for the first time ($10 entry, with community-access options). The organisers counted about 147,000 people in 2025. The 2027 date (expected Sunday 6 June) hadn't been announced at the time of writing.
    • Philly Black Pride runs a week of events every April; 2027 is set for 22 to 25 April.
    • The Dyke March (6 June in 2026, from Kahn Park) and the Trans March (10 October in 2026) are separate grassroots marches.
    • OURfest, formerly OutFest, is the free National Coming Out Day block party on Locust and Spruce between 12th and 13th, held on the Sunday nearest 11 October (11 October in 2026).

Philly Gay Calendar and Queer Dance Philly list the weekly parties; our events tab pulls from both.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • Marsha's, the queer women's sports bar at 430 South St, closed on 18 October 2026, about a year after opening.
    • Tabu became 254 in October 2024; iCandy closed in 2018 in the same building.
    • Uncles is now U Bar (2012); the guesthouse upstairs is gone.
    • Cockatoo closed in late 2024, Level Up in February 2025, Toasted Walnut in February 2021, Boxers PHL in 2020.
    • The Venture Inn closed in January 2016 (Bar X is on the site); Sisters closed in 2013 (now Franky Bradley's).
    • William Way's Spruce Street building closed in December 2025; the centre itself carries on at 330 S 13th St.
    • Concourse Dance Bar on Market Street is open but is a mainstream ball-pit club, not a gay venue.

    Where to stay

Stay in or near the Gayborhood and you can walk everywhere. The Alexander Inn at 12th and Spruce is the long-time gay-popular boutique hotel, inside the district. Morris House Hotel (225 S 8th St) is a quiet historic inn about ten minutes east. Kimpton Hotel Monaco and Loews Philadelphia are bigger, mainstream options within a 15-minute walk. See our hotels guide for the full list with walking times.

    Practical tips

    • From the airport: SEPTA's Airport Line takes about 20 to 25 minutes to Jefferson or Suburban Station, normally every 30 minutes; from Jefferson the Gayborhood is a five-minute walk.
    • Last call is 2am by state law. Voyeur and Club Philly are the only late options in the Gayborhood.
    • Getting around: Center City is flat and walkable; the Broad Street Line covers South Philly and the stadiums, and the Market-Frankford El runs to Fishtown.
    • Safety: the Gayborhood is busy and well lit, but take the usual big-city care late at night, and use a cab or rideshare for longer trips north.

A few words

Philly has its own vocabulary. A jawn is any thing, place or event ("that jawn on Camac"). Wooder is water, youse is the plural of you, and going down the shore means a trip to the New Jersey beaches; for a gay beach weekend, locals tend to head to Asbury Park, or to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware.
