About the event
“Queer Fighters of Ukraine” at Coming Out Days Fest - about LGBTQI+ people fighting for Ukraine's freedom
What is it like to defend your country in a war while continuing to fight for your own rights?
“Queer Fighters of Ukraine”, the documentary by Angelik Ustymenko and Alex King, tells the stories of Ukrainian LGBTQI+ soldiers and activists who, after the Russian invasion in 2022, found themselves on the front lines of resistance.
Before the war, Angelik was part of Rebel Queers, a collective known for its actions against homophobia and patriarchal norms. With the invasion, activism took on new forms: from participating on the front lines to organizing aid for the community.
The film also captures a harsh reality: LGBTQI+ individuals risk their lives for a country where their relationships do not yet have equal legal protection.
After the screening, we will discuss online with Angelik Ustymenko, one of the documentary's directors.
