When Family Comes in Different Forms: Navigating Today’s Environment

Workshop description:
Families come in many different forms, and 2SLGBTQ+ families may sometimes find themselves navigating a world shaped by narrow ideas of what a family “should” look like. From questions and assumptions to conversations with children, extended family, schools and the broader community, parents may wonder how to help their family confidently navigate our current environment. This workshop creates space to explore the unique experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ families and ways to build a strong sense of identity, belonging and pride.
We will explore:

Family identity: Exploring what makes your family a family and building a positive sense of identity and belonging
Navigating assumptions: Responding to questions, comments, and expectations about what a family should look like
Talking with children: Answering questions and helping children understand and feel proud of their family structure in age-appropriate ways
Extended family and community: Navigating relationships with loved ones, daycares, schools and other important people in your child’s life
Representation: Finding books, media, role models and communities that reflect and affirm your family
Creating belonging: Building supportive networks and finding spaces where your whole family can feel seen and included
