Most Auckland hotels are in the CBD and around the waterfront. The big chains and larger properties tend to be near Viaduct Harbour and the city center. K Road is a 10 to 15-minute walk from the CBD, or a quick bus or rideshare away.
CBD and waterfront
Stay in Auckland's CBD and you're near the waterfront, the main shopping areas, and K Road. Hotels here range from budget international chains to pricier waterfront spots. Viaduct Harbour has a cluster of bars and restaurants right on the water, good for a drink before dinner.
K Road and Ponsonby
You'll find smaller, boutique places on K Road itself and in Ponsonby, the neighborhood just west. Ponsonby Road is one of Auckland's main dining streets, with good cafes and restaurants. It's also gay-friendly, with several venues that have an LGBTQ+ following. Staying in Ponsonby puts you in a residential area with independent businesses, a bit removed from the CBD's hotel scene.
Cost
Auckland accommodation is expensive for the region, about what you'd pay in Sydney. Don't expect the value you might find in Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe. Plan for a major Pacific city with high living costs. Pride Auckland weekend, in late February or early March, sees demand jump — book early.
The hotels
- Arthotel The Great Ponsonby — Arthotel The Great Ponsonby is an 1890s heritage villa, a two-minute walk from Ponsonby's center. Rooms have Pacific colors and traditional art.
- Auckland City Hotel — The Auckland City Hotel sits in the CBD, a three-minute walk from Sky City. The lobby is in a 1912 heritage building; a 10-level extension has 138 modern rooms. Guests get up to 500MB of free WiFi per stay. It's a five-minute walk to the Sky Tower and Queen Street shopping. Victoria Park Market and Viaduct Harbour are both 10 minutes away on foot.
- Auckland's Waitakere Estate — This gay-owned and operated boutique hotel is set in dense native rainforest in the Waitakere Ranges. It's a private spot with landscaped gardens and views over the rainforest to Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf.
- Gay Auckland B&B — Beaches, forests, cafes, sunshine. This B&B is close to Auckland's gay area and tourist spots. Hosts share insights into Maori and European New Zealand cultures.
- The Langham Auckland — For something elegant, try The Langham Auckland. It's a five-star hotel. We recommend a room in one of the Chuan Havens, with their Orient-inspired furnishings.
- Best location: CBD for flexibility and waterfront; K Road or Ponsonby for the gay scene and an independent neighborhood feel.
- Pride booking: Book ahead for late February or early March. Demand goes up then.
- Airport: SkyBus or rideshare from Auckland International (AKL). It takes about 45 minutes to the CBD, depending on traffic. No direct rail link yet.
