International Polyamory Day
About the event
November 23rd is Polyamory Day. Polyamory is the practice of, or desire for, intimate relationships with more than one partner, with the consent of all involved partners. It is also described as “consensual, ethical and responsible non-monogamy”.
Polyamory Day originated in Canada. On November 23, 2011, the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled that Article 293 of the Canadian Criminal Code – which criminalizes polygamy – does not apply to unformalized polyamorous relationships. No appeal was filed against that decision, which means that polyamory is de facto legal in Canada when a person is not married during a ceremony for more than two people.
The polyamory flag shown here is the flag that was announced on November 23, 2022, after an election in which more than 30,000 votes were cast.
