About the event

Nouvelle Vague | Richard Linklater | France | 2025 | 105 min | Slovenian subtitles
We will kick off the new season of film evenings at the Kranj Municipal Library in September with a dynamic, fun, and utterly charming story about the making of one of the most famous films of all time. We are, of course, talking about Jean-Luc Godard's cult debut, Breathless (1960), a small-big film that forever marked the art of cinema. The acclaimed author of American independent film, Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused [1993], the Before trilogy [1995, 2004, 2013], Boyhood [2014]), has undertaken the task of bringing this pivotal moment in film history to life. Linklater tells the story of how Godard made his legendary debut in the style and spirit of the time, creating an unforgettable meta-cinematic portrait of a unique moment: the birth of the French New Wave.
"The French New Wave changed my life. [...] When I first saw Breathless, I thought: 'Ah, so it's possible!' Its freedom amazed me. I didn't know anything about filmmaking, but I felt how cool, joyful, and revolutionary that film was. [...] This is not a remake of Breathless, but an attempt to look at it from a different perspective. With my camera, I want to immerse myself in 1959 and bring to life the time, the people, the atmosphere. I want to hang out with the people who created the New Wave. I told the actors: 'You are NOT making a costume drama. You are living in the moment.'
