The author's project House of Mary Help takes Cankar's text as a starting point and transforms it into a manifesto of girlhood. 🎀
At the center of the performance is a community of teenage girls, confined to a hospice where they are to await their death. But their waiting is not passive. They fill it with daily rituals, memories, play, trying on different roles, and above all, with the community in which they care for each other, help each other, and process traumas together.
Girlhood unfolds as a space on the threshold – between childhood and adulthood, innocence and responsibility, vulnerability and rebellion. The inner worlds of the girls transition from the real to the dreamlike, the strange, and the terrifying through expressionistic and symbolic imagery.
Accompanying them are Sister Cecilija, the only maternal figure present, and Jesus Christ, who transforms from a statue on the wall into their friend, confidant, and even an object of infatuation. 🤍
