The exhibition by Zagreb artist Kristian Kožul, titled 1573. Fools, Villains, and Courts, will present his recent sculptural cycle in the space of the former monastery church GBJ, featuring – as is typical in his practice – a wide range of sculptural materials and a deep engagement with specific historical and contemporary social contexts.
With his comprehensive series, Kožul addresses contemporary notions of power, repression, civil disobedience, rebellion, and sacrifice for ideas, referencing the exceptionally important historical event, the Great Peasant Revolt or the Croatian-Slovenian Peasant Uprising of 1573. In a complex spatial installation, introducing the grotesque and dark iconography characteristic of the depiction of the peasant revolt, he questions the symbolic meaning of this event today, in an era of complete dominance of individualism, neoliberalism, consumerism, and autonomous technologies. He also addresses fundamental questions about the proverbial Darwinian human nature, which is said to always follow the law of the strongest and cruelest.
