Social Ecology in the Field
There is no longer any doubt that global capitalism in its industrial form is creating an environmental crisis of epic proportions. It is also evident that capitalism, focused on the expansion of financial markets since the 1980s, is increasing the wealth of a small elite at the expense of everyone else, as it essentially feeds on debt rather than production.
Visionary and radical thinkers, including social theorist and activist Murray Bookchin, saw the general outlines of our current crises long ago. Experiences from the 1950s already led him to consider the extent to which environmental degradation is a threat to life on our planet.
From the 1960s to the 1990s, Bookchin developed a political philosophy that attempted to connect and intertwine socialist, anarchist, and ecological ideas. He called it social ecology. Throughout his life, he adapted the details of the theory as dictated by practical experience. He devoted a large part of his writing to criticizing the crises of his time and examining the theoretical foundations of his ideas. But he was also, necessarily, involved in practical fieldwork, in the real world, and was interested in how to create new forms of political connection compatible with a sustainable and viable future society. Because there is no longer any doubt, the current way of life is pushing us off a cliff into the abyss and ruin.
