On Thursday, September 10, you are cordially invited to the National Gallery for a lecture accompanying the exhibition Fragments of the Past: Hidden Stories of Removed Frescoes. When, Why, and How Do We Remove Wall Paintings?
The lecture will be given by the exhibition's co-authors, Dr. Gašper Cerkovnik and Dr. Blaž Šeme.

Removing wall paintings is a demanding, risky, and technologically irreversible conservation-restoration process. According to modern professional guidelines, it is carried out only in rare, well-justified cases. We will present primarily more interesting and better-documented Slovenian examples (e.g., Ljubljana Cathedral, Church of St. Kancijan in Vrzdenec, Church of the Annunciation in Crngrob) and the reasons for separating wall paintings from walls, as well as various methods, tools, and materials for removing and transferring removed wall paintings to a new support. We will explain the advantages and risks of such interventions.

Dr. Gašper Cerkovnik is an assistant professor at the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. Since his student days, he has been intensely focused on medieval wall painting in Slovenia, art at the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, and the history of art history in Slovenia. He has participated in several research projects, and in 2023, he took over teaching medieval art in Slovenia.
