▶️Synopsis:
Tatjana is a citizen of Europe – or at least that's what she tells herself. She's never lived long enough in one place to feel truly at home, and now she's stuck in the infamous Amsterdam district with her teenage son, who is disgusted by her Slavic accent and her inability to be truly Dutch.
Determined to finally unravel this question, she sets out to find belonging the way she does everything else – with a camera.
She travels across Europe, knocking on the doors of relatives and friends scattered across the continent as guest workers and emigrants. Along the way, she meets people who emigrated decades ago but never truly left their villages; people who have built new lives without looking back; and two elderly sisters in Germany who hold hands and have found belonging in each other.
When she visits her father, she finds an unexpected answer – an answer that sheds new light on her entire life: not as a life without roots, but as a consequence of something that happened long ago, out of love.
Fragments of Belonging is a documentary dramedy about migration, motherhood, and the family patterns we carry within us without realizing it.
