An exceptional evening awaits, as this is a unique ensemble that is the only one in our country to perform Greek rebetiko and oriental music on authentic instruments within the broader context of Byzantine and Ottoman musical tradition. All members of the ensemble, led by the internationally renowned lutenist Boris Šinigoj, are highly skilled and seasoned soloists, fronted by singer Tadeja Pance and violinist Tomaž Šinigoj.
Why is rebetiko also called Greek blues? And who were the first creators and performers of rebetiko? Rebetes – Greeks, Armenians, Jews from the social margins, and music enthusiasts – from the turn of the 19th/20th century, who played and sang about the real drama of their lives, caught between Byzantine melos, Sephardic melancholy, and Ottoman tradition.
Smyrna, Constantinople, Piraeus… Violin, oud, bouzouki, guitar, Turkish frame drums, and above them a voice that sings heartily in the urban desert about the unfortunate fate of outcasts and those lost in the underground. True inspiration for realizing freedom as God's gift in today's times. One of the songs that the rebetes sang until hoarseness in the taverns as the water pipes went out says: "My brother, play, sing – until the resurrection – mehri tin anastasi!"
Admission is free. You are cordially invited.
The concert is organized by KUD Sestava in cooperation with the public institution Ljubljana Castle.
