Conversation with Adriana Kuči about the novel Lili Bosniae

In her novel Lili Bosniae, Adriana Kuči opens up the question of history that accumulates in the body, memory, and silence. The novel spans from Sarajevo to Ljubljana and Darfur, creating space for the erased and silenced histories of Bosnian queens in the 14th and 15th centuries.
If Adriana Kuči's debut novel My Name is Sarajevo told about the consequences of war, her new novel Lili Bosniae speaks of its residues. The novel follows women who gradually shape their community through injury, fatigue, and perseverance. Its narrative arc extends from Sarajevo to Ljubljana and even to Darfur, with the author addressing themes of war, loss, and responsibility with exceptional sensitivity.
Particularly valuable is the part of the novel that returns to Bosnian medieval history and to women about whom we know almost nothing. Jelena Gruba in the novel is not a myth or a symbol, but an absence – a void in history through which Lili Bosniae reflects on erased, silenced, and never truly recorded women's histories.
