Gay Hull: Nightlife on the Savile Street Freedom Quarter
For a city its size, Hull has pulled off something unusual over the last few years: a real, walkable gay village. Almost all of it sits on Savile Street in the Old Town — a short run of LGBTQ+ bars packed so tightly together that locals and the tourist board now call it the Freedom Quarter. DIVA magazine has even described the street as a possible contender for the North of England's next queer nightlife hub. Add the long-running Fuel club and Broadway on Ferensway, plus the city's own gay sauna, and Hull punches well above its weight.
The Savile Street Cluster
The bars here are close enough that a night out is more of a stroll than a crawl. It's an easy, friendly scene where you can drift between venues in seconds.
Cherry's Bar
The anchor of the strip: a predominantly LGBTQ+ cocktail bar at 19 Savile Street, known for a warm, inclusive atmosphere along with drag shows and regular theme nights. A firm favourite for the local community and their allies, and a natural first stop on the Freedom Quarter.
Monroe's Bar
An inclusive LGBTQ+ bar at 18 Savile Street that opened around Hull Pride 2022, complete with a dance floor and a Marilyn Monroe mural. Lively at weekends and very much part of the tight Savile Street group.
Zinnia
One of the newer additions at 20 Savile Street, listed straightforwardly as a gay bar and highly rated locally for its friendly, cocktail-led feel. It sits right between Cherry's and Kopper, so it rarely gets visited on its own.
Unit 49
A queer bar that opened in late 2023 at 49 Savile Street, part of the wave of new venues that turned this stretch into a genuine scene. Relaxed and community-minded, it fills up on weekend nights.
Kopper Bar
A compact, welcoming LGBTQ+ bar at 15 Savile Street, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with Cherry's, Monroe's and Zinnia. Small but part of the essential Savile Street run.

Fuel
Just off the Old Town on Baker Street, Fuel is Hull's long-running gay club — the late one, going into the small hours — with DJ nights and themed events for those who want to dance rather than sit and chat.
Broadway Party Bar & Courtyard
On Ferensway, Broadway is a lively LGBTQ+ party bar with an outdoor courtyard, occupying the address of the former Propaganda since 2025. Upbeat and party-focused, it's a good option when you want somewhere bigger and later.
Gentry Spa
Not a bar but worth knowing: Gentry Spa on Scott Street is Hull's men's gay sauna, open since 2017 across three floors with a dry sauna, steam room, hot tubs and a licensed bar. A dedicated sauna is a rare thing in a city this size.
What to Expect
When to go: Fridays and Saturdays are busiest, with the Savile Street bars buzzing and DJs on. Pride in Hull each July (25th anniversary in 2026, Saturday 25 July) is the peak weekend. Getting there: Hull Paragon Interchange is a short walk from Savile Street, and the whole scene is easily walkable. Age & ID: 18+, standard for UK licensed premises — carry photo ID. Vibe: relaxed, casual and inclusive; there are no strict dress codes, just come as you are.
