The honest summary: Taipei has the easiest gay scene in Asia to walk into. Marriage has been legal since 2019, the bars are open about what they are, and most of them sit within a few hundred metres of each other behind the Red House in Ximending. It isn't a huge scene by Bangkok or Tokyo standards. It is relaxed, cheap by Western prices and friendly to visitors, and it has a real lesbian bar circuit, which many Asian cities don't. Once a year, on the last Saturday of October, it hosts the largest Pride march in East Asia.

Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage legal since 24 May 2019 (first in Asia), joint adoption and marriage with most foreign partners since 2023, and sex between men was never a crime under Republic of China law. Public sex is still an offence under Criminal Code article 234, and police do raid venues (see Commander D. below).

Where the scene is

Ximending and the Red House (Wanhua)

This is the centre, and there's no argument about it. Behind the octagonal Red House theatre (西門紅樓), Lane 10 of Chengdu Road is a horseshoe of open-air bar terraces where men of every age drink at outdoor tables until late. Get off at Ximen MRT, exit 1, and walk two minutes. On the plaza itself are Café Dalida (drag at weekends, nightly from about 19:30), Mudan, which nomadicboys calls "the OG" of the plaza, Casa, G2 Paradise (a bear-leaning bar) and The Garden.

A few minutes' walk away in the same district are the indoor bars. Hero Bar (Kunming Street, open since 2016, three floors with a dance floor). Hunt (a basement club on Guiyang Street with themed nights). Locker Room (Neijiang Street, gym-locker theme, shower and drag shows, Wednesday to Sunday). Bear Junkies (2F, 192 Kunming Street, a bear bar that also does brunch). Then there's Commander D., the city's leather and fetish bar on Kaifeng Street, which has a darkroom. Police raided it on 3 October 2026 with 67 people inside, and the owner was referred to prosecutors, according to UDN and CNA. No closure has been announced, but check before you go. For a late club night on this side of town, COSMA on Wuchang Street runs queer house and circuit parties (listed on Resident Advisor) until about 05:00.

Zhongshan, Songshan and the lesbian bars

North and east of the station the bars are spread out, and this is where the women's scene lives. TABOO (B1, 90 Jianguo North Road) is the longest-running lesbian club, with all-you-can-drink entry around NT$500-800 at weekends. Wonder Bar & Lounge (183 Fuxing North Road) is a women-run lounge that opened in 2018. Incoming Bar on Dunhua South Road adds karaoke. Taiwanese guides such as yam travel and Two Sevenths list all three. G Star Club (B1, 23 Longjiang Road) is the main gay dance club: drag, go-go dancers and K-pop sets, Wednesday to Sunday, until 05:00. On the Linsen North Road bar lanes, Waroom stays open 24 hours.

The East District and Xinyi

Fairy Taipei is often placed at the Red House by older guides. It isn't there. It's on the 3rd floor of 2 Lane 49, Zhongxiao East Road Section 4, in Da'an, with plant-heavy décor and a younger crowd. In Xinyi, Belle's in Taipei (7F, ATT 4 FUN) is the dressed-up night out: a drag cabaret around a carousel bar, Wednesday to Sunday. Older guides describe Xinyi as a second gay district; we found no evidence it has a cluster of gay bars beyond Belle's.

Saunas

Taipei's bathhouses are a big part of the scene and all are men-only. Saunaasia and Travel Gay currently list these: XL Club (4F, 10 Minzu East Road; gym, darkroom, roof terrace, about NT$200-250), Soi 13in (24h, the former Rainbow Sauna), Hans (24h, 8F, 70 Xining Road, about NT$400, near the Red House), I/O (Japanese-style, limited weekday hours) and Xinhai (24h, the old Big Shanghai, near Taipei Main Station). Google also lists Peng-Qun (the former Palace) and A.K SPA as gay saunas, though the English-language guides don't cover them. Our cruising guide compares them in detail.

Gone, or changed, but still Googled

    • Funky: the 1990s club closed on 24 December 2017.
    • Abrazo (Dunhua South Road): closed 31 December 2024 after 11 years (UDN).
    • Goldfish (Linsen North Road): marked closed by Travel Gay. Some 2024 lists still carry it.
    • WERK! at Triangle: the party ended in 2022. Since February 2025 the Expo Park food zone where Triangle sits has had to close at 22:00 on most nights (CNA), so check before heading up there.
    • Rainbow Sauna, Big Shanghai, Imperial Palace: these are now Soi 13in, Xinhai and Peng-Qun.
    • Aniki and Ximen Jintong sauna: no current trace, so treat them as gone.

    Pride and the big dates

Taiwan LGBT+ Pride is on the last Saturday of October. The 24th march is on Saturday 31 October 2026, under the theme "Our Voices, Our Journey". It starts and finishes at Taipei City Hall Plaza in Xinyi, with a north route and a south route (Taiwan News, 30 September 2026). It's free and needs no registration. Organisers and CNA put the 2025 crowd at about 150,000. The ticketed X-Formosa party weekend runs 30 October to 1 November 2026, with a 3-night pass at NT$7,500 (formosapride.com). The Taiwan Transgender March, its 8th edition, gathers at 228 Peace Park on the evening of Friday 30 October. The events page has the party listings for the week. Hotels in Ximending and Xinyi fill up early for Pride weekend.

    Community and history

The Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association (12F, 70 Roosevelt Road Section 2) is the country's main LGBTQ+ NGO. It runs a phone line, youth meet-ups, a trans group and talks most weeks. Its events are on our events page. For history, visit 228 Peace Memorial Park by day. It's the "New Park" of Pai Hsien-yung's novel Crystal Boys, and the site of the 1997 police round-up of gay men known as the Changde Street incident. We found no current source showing it is still a cruising area, and we don't list it as one.

    Practical tips

    • Getting in: Taoyuan airport (TPE) is about 35-40 minutes from Taipei Main Station on the Airport MRT express. Songshan (TSA) is inside the city on the Brown Line.
    • Prices: expect NT$200-350 for a drink at gay bars. Club and lesbian-bar entry with drinks is NT$500-800, and sauna entry NT$200-400.
    • Cash: most saunas and many small bars prefer cash. An EasyCard covers the MRT, buses and convenience stores.
    • Late nights: the MRT stops around midnight. Taxis are metered and cheap, and Uber works.
    • Apps: Grindr and Hornet are both widely used. Hornet co-hosts parties in town.

A few words

同志 (tóngzhì): gay or queer, the community's own word. 拉子 (lāzi): lesbian. 熊 (xióng): bear. 乾杯 (gānbēi): cheers. 謝謝 (xièxie): thank you.

FAQ

Is Taipei safe for gay and lesbian travellers?

Yes. Same-sex couples can marry, holding hands in Ximending gets no reaction, and hotels don't question a shared bed. The main legal risk is public sex: police do enforce article 234, and they raided a fetish bar in October 2026.

Where should I stay?

Ximending if you want to walk home from the bars. Zhongshan or Da'an if you'd rather sleep somewhere quieter and take a short MRT ride. See our hotels page.

Is there a lesbian scene?

Yes, a real one: TABOO, Wonder Bar & Lounge and Incoming Bar are all women-centred or women-run, and several Red House bars are mixed.

When is the best time to visit?

The last week of October for Pride, or October to April for the weather. Summer is hot and humid, with typhoons.

Is 228 Park still a cruising spot?

We found no current evidence that it is. Go for the history in daylight. The city's saunas are where that scene went.
